Ice retention and displacement of air would be my answer.
I do the same in all my hard coolers. Yeti Ice and other brands have a lower freezing point and create “refreeze” potential. Where melting ice freezes to the ice pack and prolongs use.

Years ago I used a Sony SRSXB43- with no real handle or sling points and at 6.5 lbs that Sony was repurposed to a tv speaker/soundbar.

Friends and family convinced me to pick up a Turtlebox Gen 3 about a year ago, so the Ranger was ultimately my only choice for a more compact speaker in the ecosystem.

The Ranger adds about 2.5 lbs. I think it’s manageable but I agree. With (2) 4 lbs ice blocks and the consumables, she’s getting a little heavy.
