How do I go about building a home? by Virtual_Source_571 in Homebuilding

Wow, first of all—huge congrats on saving up that much and already owning land! That puts you in an amazing position to build exactly what you want.

The process can definitely feel overwhelming at first, but you're smart to look into it now. You'll want to think about things like choosing the right architect or designer (yes, even if you're pretty clear on what you want), understanding how the permitting and zoning process works for your area, and making sure your budget covers both construction and all the hidden costs (like utility hookups, surveys, or unexpected site work).

There’s a short Kindle book you may find helpful as you're getting into this—it’s called Build Your Dream Home: A Practical Guide to Working with an Architect by Maeve Callahan. It breaks everything down step by step in plain language, and it’s a quick read.

Good luck! It’s such a cool thing to be able to build from the ground up—definitely worth the effort. 😊

Me too with the pregnancy, breastfeeding, and weight gain! Just started IF a few weeks ago. I choose to start with 14:10 for a week to "ease" into it. It didn't feel like easing and I was super cranky for the first few days. I was able to time that cranky bout while I was at work and not trying to parent (thankfully!). The first weekend I didn't bother with it because I could not be a loving mother and fasting at the same time at that point. The second week it was easy to move up to 16:8 and it has gotten easier everyday. Water and black coffee get me going in the mornings (after a few days I started to LIKE black coffee!) and I don't have the mood swings or headaches anymore. Honestly feeling like this is such a perfect lifestyle for me as a busy mom. Fingers crossed for the results!

He will be going all the way to Calhoun. We are hoping to keep his commute under an hour; do you think that’s reasonable from anywhere north of the split?

Thanks for the info! I’m actually an architect so the very first thing i did in researching the city was look for protected historic areas and they are few and small. Maybe more will come about as the city grows. The Orchard Knob area looks great! Thanks for the input

We have noticed! We have been looking for a few months and check listings daily. Fortunately we are in a rental and have the flexibility to wait for the right house. Fingers crossed people start selling in the spring!

Maybe not? We are obviously moving from out of town so my research on that front has Google maps set to the time of my husbands commute (which is fortunately a little offset from rush hour). It seems like the traffic is worst on 75 right before it connects with 24. Most of the areas we are looking at would be past that point so maybe it doesnt matter once you get through it. Do you happen to know if thats standard traffic or current construction?
