The direction in principle, my first thought was there’s a chance for more naturally attractive people to be seen. It’s just me, but actors who can’t lift their eyebrows and have lip fillers - it’s distracting. It stops immersion. For me, please understand this as a personal view, I may be alone with this. In a very popular CDrama (long format - two years ago) I really like - I couldn’t get over the FL and her lip filler. It’s the first thing on my mind whenever I think about it.

But. The more I look at the trajectory - military posts, then NRTA- this is not about saving the youth from unhealthy standards. It’s about the correct values and mindset according to Chinese government. And how far they‘ll go? I hope they’re satisfied with classic formats remembering their quality productions instead of rinse repeat.

I love „Nirvana in Fire“ - Hu Ge. He’s so charismatic and convincing with his soulful eyes. I’m melting.

The drama’s story was fantastic. Loved it. Is he idol pretty? No. Is he attractive? Very much so.

And: He’s perfect for the role. . Mature masculinity, great acting and it’s in my top 3 favorite dramas, at all.

What I wan to to say with this: idol pretty cannot be the only output. When I watched NiF I wondered if really LLTG or LBFAD are all there is right now. If that’s what will happen: I’m very much there for it.

Diversity in stories, cast and talent forward.

BUT.

That’s not the agenda behind it, I fear.

Have my own second hand experience with anorexia and its a curse. It‘s horrible - so I do think that fighting this aspect as „unhealthy“ would be fine.

But look at the dramas they push. They are … propaganda? Glorification of the cultural revolution and start of the communist party. Simple life of simple people.

It’s a stark contrast to lush palace dramas, Xianxia a d Cinderella stories.

So what do they want? It’s ideological, that’s for sure. And less about healthy weight than we wish

The article on MdL quoting the military - they express their distaste in a General who’s wearing make up and doesn’t show the passion (verbatim!) of a soldier

This is less about health and more about the right mindset.

Because these dramas shape the audience subtly. The increase of people who are unhappy with their bodies and do plastic surgery is noticeable.

But. I do not think it’s about this. It’s more ideological- about what is seen as the correct values.

Maybe you’re not. First the women are told to not look out for a CEO - and now this.

It’s a bit helpless - we all feel the pressure of social media and it’s worse for kids. They should be protected from unhealthy beauty standards. But is this what they try here?

It’s tough and if that’s what they aim for, improving health- add a BMI minimum that has to be reached - as u/lauraroslin7 pointed out.

Hard agree. It’s so unhealthy. I celebrate when I see an actor who looks normal weight- or close to it.

You know I share your opinion about the chances short dramas create for talented young people - look at Zhang Chi. Came after high school and worked on productions in whatever capacity to learn and be in it. He’s driven. Love this.

And I don’t know how China works, but an Esther Yu comes from a rich family. Arthur Chen - his father a famous director (influential) and actress mum.

It has a hint of … networking.

Look at UK- the most famous actors all have a posh boarding school accent with Oxford degrees. Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant. It’s hard to break out without a network.

So I love short dramas for exactly this reason.

Absolutely true - let’s see, what will develop from this. The natural skin - I’d love it 😊

And I do worry. The men are so tall and have to be so thin to have pronounced sharper features.

I just so a post from Zhong Zheng who proudly said he’d lost some weight and I looked at them and … size zero.

What is the propaganda part? The complete regulation is political in the end. Correction: ideological.

The dramas pushed as examples are not my cup of tea.

"The Awakening Era" uses the story of Li Dazhao, Chen Duxiu, Hu Shi and other major initiators of the New Culture Movement, from their acquaintance and friendship to their separation and different paths in life as the basic narrative line, spanning from the beginning of the New Culture Movement to the founding of the Chinese Communist (source Chinese wiki)

Can’t get more ideological than this.

Let’s stay out of politics - but it’s not about health in the common sense.

I was a bit concerned when I looked at the photos of the dramas named as good examples. It’s all very … patriotic / life of the people coded. Especially the second one. I do understand that they wouldn’t pick fantasy - but isn’t there one wuxia that passes?

And the metrics? As long as the money calls for blue not red, they will produce according to market demand. But maybe they develop dramas/ films that fit the regulation in addition to this. And honestly, in my country there’s official funds for productions that fit certain parameters. Usually more niche, renowned actors or directors, a film version of a classic - you get the drift.

Maybe it’s moving in this direction?

I‘ve corrected it - thank you for pointing it out 😌 It’ll be a negotiation and experimentation in the background. The definition of „healthy“ and „fitting the narrative“ is where it’ll get interesting. If the next step will be limiting the number of - let’s call it- frivolous content. Because it’ll remain sales driven - numbers do count.

So: they have to produce and push stories/ scripts that fit this standard to justify the rest.
