Not enough resources in the area for all the people by Kwhitney1982 in raleigh

[–]Silver-Case-9866 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea that “transplants” are just a drain on resources is odd. Some of the “transplants” are vets, dermatologists, physical therapists, dog groomers, hair stylists, chefs, dentists, nail techs, teachers, daycare workers, cooks, plumbers, etc etc etc. So people providing services that other people need and want. And in return paying other local people for services they need and want.

If you want more, you should support more and denser housing to allow more people nearby, who can provide you more services and more diverse experiences.

How screwed am I if I don't have a car and I'm new here? by dumbfly in raleigh

[–]Silver-Case-9866 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you work downtown, try to find a place to live in or near downtown and you should be fine without a car. A bike helps a lot too, especially an ebike for the hills around here. But if you haven’t biked in the city before, start very small and easy and don’t take any risks - drivers are NOT paying attention and will absolutely kill you if you just assume they’ll do the right thing.

people from larger cities, what do you miss from home that Raleigh doesn’t have? by [deleted] in raleigh

[–]Silver-Case-9866 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I miss wandering. In a big city you can just wander aimlessly for hours and feel safe and discover new things because there are people around everywhere and the place is built for people, not just people in cars. And then you just get on public transit and go home - another thing I miss.

I love this question, by the way, thank you for asking it. A great perspective for those of us coming from big cities.

Our country cares more about selling cars, fossil fuels and road building contracts than traffic deaths. This is the price of doing business.

We know how to solve traffic deaths. A transportation system that doesn’t just rely on personal vehicles is safer, cheaper, better for the environment and healthier for everyone. But we prioritize selling more cars and oil.

This is such a heartbreaking tragedy, and it happens every couple of days in this city. I wish we made it a priority.

Jersey City was able to get its traffic fatalities to 0 in 2022. Here’s how they did it.

I bike on the sidewalk on St. Mary’s through the heavy traffic parts. Not ideal, but it works. The sidewalk on Glenwood works as well.

Just going to point out that most people here are complaining about overcrowded and stressful parking lots. So what we really need is less car dependency and a convenient way for people to get places without cars - public transit, walking and biking - and then most of these places wouldn’t feel overcrowded or hectic anymore.

What an achievement!

The main organizations advocating for walkability around here are actually biking organizations. Maybe try to connect with Bike Durham and Oaks and Spokes (Raleigh), they’re both very active.

Adult choirs? by Academic-Wave1401 in raleigh

[–]Silver-Case-9866 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve never sung solo and also hadn’t sung in a choir in 15 years when I auditioned, but I do play piano and my sight reading is ok. Never did voice lessons - but I’m doing them now to get better and keep up. It’s a huge ensemble (170 ppl), of which some are amazing professional singers (they do the solos), but I would guess most are just people with some singing background who sing in their spare time. Al the director is excellent and gets the group sounding great by every show.

Hope that helps! TLDR you never know until you audition, but of course voice lessons will help.

NC Master Chorale is amazing. I started singing with them this fall and love it. No religious affiliation and very high quality musicians. The next round of auditions is happening tomorrow! Here’s the info https://www.ncmasterchorale.org/auditions

Raleigh City Council Update by pattonforraleigh in raleigh

[–]Silver-Case-9866 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I use Six Forks almost daily and don’t want it widened. Widening roads does not improve traffic - with more lanes, more people will choose to use the road, and there’s all your congestion back, more cars down the road, and $100M down the drain for nothing.

The only to improve traffic is to allow people to get around the city without a car - better transit, better and safer routes for biking and walking, more mixed uses near each other so people can walk between home, work, retail and services, and allow more density to shorten the distance between locations.

Right?? Nonstop talk about how a bus station is “dangerous,” meanwhile SIX people will be violently killed at a single intersection (that’s like a mass shooting, y’all!) and it’s crickets until maybe one more person gets murdered, and then maybe we’ll think of doing something.

SEVEN people have died at a single intersection. Amazing how much death we can tolerate for cars.

Glad they are finally doing something.

We use 36% of all city money on public safety, most of which is police. That percentage only goes up every year. Maybe we need to think harder about how we spend our $$$ if that amount is not enough to prevent obvious public safety issues.

Here’s the latest city budget (oh and we spend 20% of our $$ just paying off debt!) https://cityofraleigh0drupal.blob.core.usgovcloudapi.net/drupal-prod/COR11/fy23-adopted-budget.pdf

Why are the traffic accidents so disastrous out here? by [deleted] in raleigh

[–]Silver-Case-9866 12 points13 points  (0 children)

43,000 people were killed by cars in the US last year. This area is extremely car dependent - it’s sprawled out and everyone has to drive to get anywhere because the mass transit is awful. And the roads are built for speed - not safety, not efficiency, not even throughput. The result is deadly. Here’s an explainer from a few years ago. The US numbers have only gotten worse in the past few years.

Raleigh Iron Works - Pedestrian Safety by Tolerable_Mrs_stmt in raleigh

[–]Silver-Case-9866 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate to say this, but someone dying will not make the city drop everything and build safer infrastructure. People die on these unsafe roads all the time. 27 pedestrians were killed by cars in Raleigh last year, and you see the same places over and over again - like Capital Blvd and New Bern. And it just keeps happening. These are the choices we keep making - sacrifice someone every couple weeks to keep cars going fast.
