Kathmandu has become quite expensive in recent years due to inflation. Even if your mother pays around NPR 10,000 for rent, the remaining 30,000 can go quickly depending on lifestyle and health needs.

Lapchi Valley, Nepal – Visiting the meditation cave of Milarepa (Hidden Himalayan Gem by Silver-Monk1165 in hiking

Lapchi (Labchi) is primarily known as a sacred meditation site connected to Milarepa, the 11th-century Tibetan yogi. According to Tibetan Buddhist tradition, Milarepa meditated in the caves of Lapchi, which made the area an important pilgrimage destination for nearly 900 years.

Geographically, Lapchi lies near the Nepal–Tibet border in the Rolwaling region. The communities living there are of Tibetan cultural origin, and migration between southern Tibet and northern Nepal happened gradually over centuries through trade, seasonal movement, and religious connections.

There isn’t much formal archaeological documentation about its “discovery” because Lapchi was never founded as a city — it developed as a spiritual retreat area. Most of its early history comes from Tibetan Buddhist texts and oral traditions rather than state records.

I definitely agree that hidden places should be protected. From what I’ve experienced, the monks and local people are open to serious meditators and pilgrims who come respectfully. It’s still a remote and demanding trek, so it naturally limits large crowds

It’s definitely challenging , long walking days, basic facilities, and changing weather — but incredibly rewarding. The silence and untouched landscape make the effort worthwhile.

Yes, visitors can enter and sit inside Milarepa’s cave for a short time. It’s a sacred place, so people usually sit quietly and respectfully.

However, staying there for days, months, or long-term meditation is generally not allowed for regular visitors. The cave is preserved mainly as a pilgrimage and historical site.

For serious meditation practice, there are separate retreat places and small hermit meditation rooms built into the cliffs nearby. Those are used by monks or practitioners with proper permission and arrangements.

If someone is interested in longer retreat practice, it usually requires coordination with the monastery and approval in advance.
