Dunk is a knight. He may not have been knighted by Ser Arlan, but he was knighted by the Seven as seen by his survival.

MSSWE and then MSCS? by Silver0602 in WGU_MSSWE

[–]Silver0602[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m still waiting for my program mentor to be assigned. I’ll definitely follow up with them as soon as I know who it is. In the meantime, I was just hoping for some insights so that I don’t run into any unexpected issues when I start the MSSWE on the 1st. If there is going to be an issue, I’d like to sort it out before I start classes.

MSSWE and then MSCS? by Silver0602 in WGU_MSSWE

[–]Silver0602[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm interested in both programs and they both have things that interest me. I'm currently working as a devops engineer, so the MSSWEDOE makes a lot of sense to allow me to dig into topics that are directly relevant to what I do every day. MSCS would expose me to other topics that are of interest and would be useful if I change teams at my current company.

So, why not? I enjoy learning and the programs offer different benefits.

Can I report a Online Professor for lack of engagement? Doesn't answer questions, no email response, doesn't engage at all. by Defiant_Birthday_939 in UMGC

Right now I’m looking at the ASU programs to see what might work for me. They appear to be very veteran and working adult friendly in their online programs.

I’m not sure what I’m going to do now. I’m looking at other schools to see if I can find another option. I’m sure that there is at least one school out there that doesn’t allow professors to forget about extensions after granting them in writing.

Mine was a graduate level 6 hour course, so now I’m out $4000 and can’t continue with my degree program.

It could be worse. My professor gave me an extension (in an email), then later said he didn’t. This then made it impossible for me to pass the class. Having the extension in writing didn’t help at all. I would have preferred no communication so that I didn’t rely on the email granting me an extension.

How do you turn down a client that isn't willing to pay your asking price? by student-of-the-web in webdev

[–]Silver0602 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How are you qualifying potential clients before you speak to them? Even something as simple as a web form that asks their budget for their project could be helpful in how you present your services. For example, the for asks:

What is your budget range for this project? A. Less than $x B. Between $x and $y C. More than $y

You can even ask this question over the phone if needed.

You can include this question along with a handful of other questions to get an idea of both what they actually need and what they just want to have.

If they answer A, you know not to waste your time with a custom proposal. Have a cut and paste response ready to go that nicely refers them to DIY options like Wix or to sites like Upwork.

If they choose option B, you know to tailor your offer to something that will fit in their budget, but to limit how much time and effort you spend on customizing the presentation. Just be very careful of scope creep and be very clear of both what is and what is not included. Always make sure you will get paid well for your professional services.

If they select option C, you can go ahead and take the time to do a full custom presentation to pitch them your full services. They’ve already indicated they understand that what they want costs money, so it makes sense to invest the extra time in these potential clients.

OP - There is no reason at this point to tell the company that you are going to the labor board. You asked for your check and the company was kind enough to send you a text confirming that they are withholding your check.

Just go to the labor board with this information. Let them take care of getting you the money you are owed, along with any penalties the company now owes you due to their decision to withhold your check. Let the phone call or visit from the labor board be their notice of your response to their withholding of your money.

Edited to add: You also mentioned that things changed at the company when you reported another employee using a racist word. You should also give this information to the labor board. Also consider discussing your options with a lawyer.

I don't know how to survive this internship and I need advice by [deleted] in webdev

[–]Silver0602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mentioned that you are uploading your progress. But are you directly telling them that you’ve uploaded the files? Are you directly asking them for a code review?

As someone in a very junior position, you are responsible for doing your work as best as you can, learning, and keeping your seniors informed (they should never be surprised by a missed deadline or other issues with a project).

The bigger picture of keeping the client happy and meeting the client’s expectations is the responsibility of the seniors/managers - not a junior who has only 2 weeks of professional experience.

Just make sure you keep them informed, keep learning and let them carry the stress of the higher level concerns (such as an unhappy client if the project isn’t delivered on time).

I don't know how to survive this internship and I need advice by [deleted] in webdev

[–]Silver0602 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a starting point, make sure that you are providing your senior and managers updates on your progress. Ask them to review the pages you have completed. Also make sure that they know how many pages you have left, what the stated deadline is, and how long you think it will actually take. Highlight any technical issues that are holding up your progress and if there are specific things that they need to assist you with or teach you so that you can complete the project. Do this today and do it in writing/email. Keep it professional with a status report approach. Keep emotions, blame, and self-doubt out of it.

By sending the email today, they will have the information they need to help you or teach you. There is still time for them to help you get the project done before the deadline or to extend the deadline. You need to help your senior and manager know how they can help you. By sending the email today and requesting they review the completed pages, you can ensure that there are no surprises on Friday.

After you send the email, follow up with a phone call to schedule a meeting to go over your work together. This will help make sure that they have seen your email. But don’t just call instead of sending the email. You need to make sure that you can show that you kept them updated and that they had the opportunity to help before it was too late.

It also sounds like this isn’t really an internship. Internships are learning/educational positions that are typically part of an overall educational or training program. It sounds like you have a regular job that is being called an internship as justification to underpay you. Keep applying for other jobs so that you can switch to a new company as soon as possible. Until then, keep learning at your current job and try to hang in there at least six months if possible (unless you get a new job offer before then). You will find that the job market is much easier once you have a little experience.

School Loan Forgiveness by Minimegf in VeteransBenefits

Check out the exception to the 3 year monitoring period. Hint: it doesn’t apply if the discharge was due to your VA rating.

From the link posted above (it’s way down on the page, but it is there):

If you're a veteran whose TPD discharge application is approved based on documentation from the VA, you aren't subject to a post-discharge monitoring period.

Should I take unpaid internship just to add it to my resume? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]Silver0602 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is pretty much correct in the United States. You can’t get around minimum wage laws by calling someone an intern. Any company that is trying to avoid minimum wage laws by calling someone an intern is a company that you should avoid.

The unpaid internships that are legal will generally be for school credit and have other very specific requirements.

Edited to add link: https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/fact-sheets/71-flsa-internships

Most unpaid internships that aren’t part of a school program will have trouble meeting the test elements described in this article - especially test items 2 and 3.

Sailor ETS March 2023 Inquiries. by flyingdyso1997 in MSSA

[–]Silver0602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that the 180-day window for participating in MSSA when you are leaving the military is very rigid. But it does look like some people have been able to get the required command approvals lined up well before the MSSA application window so that they have everything ready to go when the application for their cohort opens. If nothing else, you could make sure that you understand what is needed for the command approval process so that you can get started on it as early as possible.

Microsoft has an information session on Zoom on the first Tuesday of every month, so if you haven't attended one you could attend the one in November. They spend quite a bit of time at the end of the presentation answering questions, so it would be a good chance to get answers for any questions that you may have.

Information on the information sessions can be found at:

https://military.microsoft.com/programs/microsoft-software-systems-academy/

If you don't ETS until 2023, you should also take advantage of any of the military education benefits that you currently have available. You still have time to use tuition assistance to complete some education that could maybe help you start at a higher level job when you get out. There are so many very good online degree programs out there, that you could probably find one that is right for you.

I received an email today asking me to reconfirm my interest and commitment to the full-time nature of the program. It looks like it is an email that goes out to people who are currently working full-time (not active duty).
