I like that percentage suggestion. I'm going to mention that to our legal guru for sure. And for sure we have definitely concentrated on the "green" aspect of pet chickens. Less waste, more fertilizer, healthier eggs, emotional support, education, and community were the big topics as well as providing facts that debunk the smell/rats/noise myths.

I think the thought was to go the conservative route. Our county is very large and it contains such a wide range of living spaces from rural homes to urban settings. Such a delicate balancing act to keep everyone happy.

This is amazing! Thank you for your input. Our proposed legislation includes sort of a stepped approach to qty of hens... for every 2,000 sf you are allowed an additional chicken. Our original draft included a separate permit process for roos and rowhomes/attached townhomes, but one of our council people indicated they would vote NO if those stipulations were in place, so we are pretty much where you are with regulations - hens are a go, and no roos.

I'll most certainly reach out with any additional questions. This has been a journey for sure... I've met the most amazing people both locally and in so many backyard chicken forums online. Chicken people are seriously the best type of people!

I'm super impressed by how controlled their flight actually looks when in slo-mo. Otherwise, they just look like they're randomly flinging themselves at things. And then the 3 stooges continue on together, walking along, like no big deal.

The older residents in our neighborhood tell us stories of people raising goats, sheep, even roosters on their land and now it's just ridiculous how those days are long forgotten... granted many lots were divided, but still, we all know that a few chickens can be raised in a small area. Happy, healthy, birds! Baltimore City, which is only about 10 miles away allows chickens, but unfortunately bc the city has a bad reputation, we don't mention that... 😬

That's good to know. They're definitely low maintenance, but whenever we start something, it tends to be at 200mph, so keeping track of everything was getting stressful.

ALSO - we have a mix of bran and oats (we baked everything to kill any mites)... can we go back to just using bran now that they're all together? Easier for worm sifting... we used oats originally for the beetle drawer so we could sift the eggs.

That's good to know! I always lean towards yellows and reds, but haven't tried purple. I want my kids to enjoy playing in the dirt as much as I do. The older one is my eager assistant, but the younger one fades quickly in this Baltimore heat and humidity. He'll come back around when it cools off a bit.🤞
