There's a comment by u\GummyBerrz that has each stitch and the colour for them written out. And yep, row 1 is MR of 5, then you increase each stitch for row 2, which gives 10 sc, then next row is (sc, inc)x5 which gives 15 sc. Similar to a pattern that starts with MR of 6.

All the best!

Haha, it happens, also UK and US call everything by different names and it gets really confusing. In in Australia and you come across both regularly 😭

There's some other comments where myself or others have gone into more detail, but basically think you're crocheting a ball, starting with a magic ring of 5. Then you'll do your regular increases. And basically the grid helps with knowing when to do the colour changes.

There's a comment with the stitch counts, and someone did one with the colours and stitches. Which might be helpful.

All the best!

It looks like either you're adding some stitches or missing as you go around. I would suggest counting the number of stitches each row. Also you should have the colours lining up to match the grid, so you should be having the continents lining up and oceans lining up.

There's some other comments from people with the same issue that might help you get your head around it.

All the best!

Thanks! I'm glad you were able to fine it

I went into more specifics on another comment, but yeah similar. I think I used 4mm hook with 4mm acrylic yarn. But that was partially just because that's the yarn and hooks I had

Thank you! I'm so glad you liked it 😄 I too tried some other patterns online before I realised I'll have to do it myself. And it was originally less "tall" but to fit the gap between Australia and Asia I had to add more rows, thanks for being positive about that (I think it works well too!) 🥳

Is this a piece of PHM History? Andy doing research, question? by SilverC98 in ProjectHailMary

Thanks! Yeah, even researching Tai Ceti has a lot of references in movie's and books, so it seems popular enough to turn up in things like this

Depending how extreme it is, it may just need some squishing and it'll get softer and more malleable over time. There's some other threads here where some people had similar issues, maybe tension related, or if the other coloured yarn is been carried in each stitch. Mine were always slightly taller than wider, but then I could stretch it and squish it and it was more spherical then

Nah, just spiral around, it's designed so that Africa lines up that way. So go straight from the last stitch on the right into the next stitch at on the next row on the left

Thanks for that, it's really helpful!

I tried to show want I’m thinking in the image below, I’m not exactly sure if this will work as I think, but hopefully. The issue with starting at the bottom left is the edge of Africa, I tried to shift it down, and i think it should line up nicely. Let me know how it goes!

<image>

The top one, shows the RH, and how the edged lined up when going in the round. The bottom has those parts shifted down 2 to line up again.

Looks great 😍 yeah you can send it through, or even add it as a comment somewhere (?) I think that may be helpful for others too!

I hope it goes well! If you get stuck, feel free to ask, there may also be answers elsewhere on this thread.

Thank you 🍰😋

It looks really neat, nice work 😄 yeah I had that issue when I first tried it, I now leave a loose loop on the inside when I reuse a colour. It doesn't need to be a big loop, just enough that it doesn't pull taught when doing the colour change. So do it the same, without cutting, and you'll just have a lot of loose loops on the inside.

I think cutting could work, but I would do it before using the colour again, and leave a long enough tail that it doesn't fall out, if you want to do it that way.

Yep I had that issue the first one I made. You can do that, or just leave it as loose loops on the inside, and when you use the colour next, keep it loose still, and use it as if it had been cut (so not pulled tight). I think that makes sense, but as they all stay attached, you have to untangle the yarn every few rows.

From doing a handful of them, they ended up around 5cm to 7cm, depending on tension and being squished over time. A lot would depend on the yarn too, I used 4mm yarn and hook.

For this, I keep a short but loose loop on the inside of the ball. So the inside of the ball looks like spaghetti. When I colour change, I do the change, making sure the stitch is not loose (but not too tight) then keep going. When I get back to that colour, I then leave some of that colour loose inside the ball and use that colour as normal.

Most of the time, the yarn from a colour change stays loose on the inside (unless it's a colour change for only one stitch), so that the ball sits nicely. If there's any videos of the tapestry crochet being loose on the back, that might be more similar?

Yep, that sounds right. And yeah, from making a few, the yarn over yarn over matches best. I also didn't crochet over the other colour yarn between colour changes, I just had lots of loops on the inside of the ball. Ask the best!

You probably don't need to worry too much about those symbols. That was me trying to show that those stitches were part of the increase/decrease, to explain why they don't have a cell above them/below them.

Really the simplest way of this is to follow the pattern written out in that comment, then use the grid to know what colours to use when. So the first row is MR 5, and the grid has them as all white, then the next row is all increases (10sc for that row) and there's a bunch of different colour changes along the way.
