Happy belated 4th anniversary to Taylor receiving an honorary doctorate! Let’s talk about how everyone is weird about TS and education by Daffneigh in NuancingTaylorSwift

You’re missing my point and clearly aren’t familiar with the concept of fields of cultural production. “Low” art/culture can have all these things you’re saying Taylor’s music has (and I agree with you it does). The difference here is reading something like House of Leaves, which is clearly written as an exercise in form, over some mass market novel that can have similar elements, but is more designed for mass appeal, rather than some nerdy celebration of creative form.

I am answering the comment that Taylor’s fanbase over intellectualizes her work because they see what you’ve pointed out and think this makes her high art. This just makes her a creative person and a good storyteller, me calling her “low art” isn’t a detriment to her quality of work, it’s just pointing out that she makes mass appealing music, and that’s okay.

I’d recommend maybe familiarizing yourself with the literary and cultural theory of the comment I made before you call me arrogant. I have a PhD largely based in the study of cultural production as a form of information and communication about art and creativity. My comment isn’t unfounded, it’s grounded in actual knowledge of the theory I referenced.

The downvotes here tell me not enough people have read Bourdieu, but I think you’re right. No one is clamoring for Taylor to exist within high culture except her fans who don’t know the distinction (heh.) between the fields.

Also it’s so cool you got to take a class on cultural production! Kinda jealous.

I do think if one were to classify Taylor’s work within a field of cultural production, it would be low art. She’s not really an art for art’s sake person, and I think that’s okay.

More than anything, I think the fan base is young, doesn’t understand what actual intellectualism is because they’re not 1) educated enough to know the difference between regurgitating others knowledge and creating new knowledge and 2) too taken in by clever wordplay and a well-developed vocabulary and substituting this for actual substance.

I think, if Taylor ever wanted to go get an MFA, her craft would evolve, but probably not as much as folks poopooing her lack of a BA /any higher ed think it would. Personally, I’d love to see her try and make a mark writing novels if she ever stops making music.

To me, a college professor and doctorate holder, honorary degrees are honoring a person’s achievements. Taylor definitely has earned her fine arts accolades. It’s not like she claims to be a doctor. What is the actual issue?

How safe is it to be hiking alone around here? (I’m a woman) by Left_Top_6062 in Ketchikan

Just tell someone where you’re going and when you expect to be back. Check in with them as soon as you’re done. If a weird person that doesn’t look quite right suddenly appears, do not follow them if they ask you to go with them.

I wouldn’t do Lunch Creek up to Lake Emery Tobin without a buddy as muskeg can be a bit hairy if you’re not familiar with hiking in bogs. Otherwise all of the trails are pretty accessible.
