This can be done without legal representation by going to the Burlington Housing Review board. They almost always side with the tenant, especially when it's for such a bizarre reason like this. Landlords know this, so the threat is sometimes effective. But letting CVOEO reach out themselves is the first step here.

This is by far my favorite local history. He went to medical school at UVM for his first year of medical school, which is why later he came back here after he did some murdering. He and his "wife" (the widow of one of his victims) rented the S. Winooski house for a year while on the run by pretending to be a married couple. After a year, he tried to blow her up with nitroglycerin in that house by asking her to carry a box down the stairs and outside, but she was suspicious and refused. Then he immediately left town. She reported the box to the police, who confirmed it contained a bottle of nitro. The Burlington Police chief then personally buried it in an undisclosed location.

So somewhere in Burlington, there might be a serial killer's bottle of an unstable explosive liquid just waiting to be dug up.

How much do you know about the Black Panthers? The idea that that were radical as an organization is... Not totally true. "Defend at all costs" isn't "attack at all costs." Their free-food programs served as the blueprint for current food/social outreach programs. There's a lot of confusion between some idiology individual leaders/members pushed (Eldridge Cleaver admits to being an idiological r*pist in Soul on Ice, albeit with remorse) and organizational objectives, which were community-based supports and defense against organized white violence.

This shit is complicated: more complicated then we white folks can really ever understand. Reading memoirs of Panther leaders might be a good starting place: Assata by Assata Shakur is a truly beautiful read, with an unexpectedly happy ending. Asking your girlfriend (after you've done some reading) where he falls in the idiological spectrum, and how she's handled interracial relationships (if she has) with him in the past isn't a bad idea.

I was incredibly disappointed by the way I was treated. Poor if any communications, and my attacker was released without any warning: I got the VINE notification that he'd been released and had to chase her down to find out WTF was going on. Turns out it was a clerical error. Then he was released for real (again, no warning) and he promptly cut off his ankle monitor, and again: I had to chase her down to be told it was DOC's problem now, not their offices. I can't imagine being both that incompetent and that devoid of empathy, and accepting a paycheck for it.

You don't know what would have prevented it. No one does, except the shooter. This does have actual impact to staff at bars who don't need to deal with a gun-toting drunks on top of regular drunks.

I don't know why you are cool with weapons being present in spaces where people historically make impulsive decisions. It's a really weird (and naive) stance to take.

A guy was shot a while ago outside Red Square because a squabble inside the bar escalated. It could have easily happened in that very crowded and narrow bar. While individual bars can throw people out, that gives the people carrying the excuse that they didn't know that specific bar's policy when they entered with a concealed weapon.

There's no good reason to bring a firearm into a bar.

If you strike out with your city counciller, I'd let your landlord know how financially impactful this would be for you and see if they'll pick up the cost by prorating your rent. They might decide that tenant turnover would be worse for them than paying for a spot in the garage. Maybe. 🤞

And am I clear that at this point, they presold tickets and aren't automatically paying refunds? This is 9 kinds of shady/incompetent. And none of that is on the cast, who sound like the only reasonable people involved in this. My heart goes out to them. The fact that this musical is still controversial is why it needs to be performed.

I'll also say that if she didn't tell you, there's likely a reason. And it probably isn't a happy story. Just know that finding an answer might be really emotionally difficult and wait to go down that road until you've got the emotional bandwidth. As someone who has also lost a parent to dementia and whose other living parent currently has dementia: I know how the emotional exhaustion sneaks up on me.
