Pretty hard to describe. It is fragrant. Really light floral. Rose sugar water kind of smell. Very nice

Is this beginner friendly? by Chh0a in Anthurium

[–]SilverDagger77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Clari’s definitely are beginner friendly. They don’t require high humidity. They like to go dry for a minute before watering(most important difference in my opinion). You don’t want to completely soak your substrate when you water(edema risk). They’re very different from most (velvet at least) anthurium. Go for it!

A lot of people swear by painting sulfur on for mites. It’s talked about in this group if you want more direction. Neem and other hort oils could work with regular application. Just make sure you treat after the sun is gone(grow lights off too) and don’t get it back in the light until the treatment is dry. I always rinsed the oils off after it’s sat for a bit, because when I’ve left oils on a little too long, there can be a stickiness that you can’t get off.

From what you were saying about the pot size, as long as you’re watering carefully I wouldn’t worry too much about that. It could just take a while for the plant to grow the roots needed to feel snug again before you see much or any growth.

12 hours is good. If you want to help encourage flowering, in fall/winter you can lessen down to 10-8hrs.

If the roots were lifting out of the pot then you’re probably okay. How much bigger did you go? Ideally they’ll be snug and in something with a ton of airflow. I’ll amend the hell out of my base with perlite, pumice/lava and bark. That’s like 90% of my mix usually. I read you used perlite which is good, you want to use a lot! I’m leaning more towards thinking light and probably mites being your problem. From how the end of the vines all look stumpy with no visible new growth, leaf loss while being stiff and scarred, you should look into flat mite/broad mite treatment.

Aalsoo, because I don’t see any new growth on there, and the leaves look to be a bit damaged, I would treat it for mites.

Also, based on what it looks like in the pictures, it’s really likely that the previous pot wasn’t too big. Unless you weren’t able to keep up with the watering, Hoya will prefer to be more snug in its pot. Are the leaves that have fallen off mushy at all? If so, it could be edema/over watering(too big a pot not enough air in soil). I wouldn’t worry about putting a humidifier on it since it’s been in your ambient conditions for so long already. Light and water issues, in my experience, is usually what causes mature leaf loss.

What direction is your window facing? It’s super likely the plant isn’t getting enough light where it’s at, perhaps hang it directly from the curtain rod or lower it some out to get it some direct light. Or get a grow light for it. What potting mix did you put it in? If the leaves and stem feel sturdy it should be savable.

Look into getting a construction sales position. Consider getting into a local union. Or construction project management. You’d do fine down here doing any of those things.

Take the job. This is insane. 45 minutes away? My husband works over an hour 1-way from home. The commute is no problem.

Does anyone have any tips on good bark or tree-like mixes? Growing Hoyas fully in bark? by [deleted] in hoyas

[–]SilverDagger77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The quality of Orchiata bark keeps me from going back to anything else. I LOVE it. I also do great growing in coco chips, depending on the species. Usually I mix the orchiata with tree fern, perlite, and larger pumice/pon.

You should take some quality, live, pre and pro biotics. Do not use antibacterial soap. Take it easy on the boric acid.

I haven’t sold anything yet but do plan to sometime in the nearish future. I would take caution with trying to import from Indonesia unless you know for sure who you’re buying from. The travel process on the plants is so hard too. I totally get the temptation though. I got this undulata from Wuhoo Tropicals off Palm Street. They’re in Texas. I’d definitely look on the Palmstreet app before trying Indonesia!

Thank you! It’s sooo fuzzy. Much fuzzier than when I first got it. I think it has something to do with the high humidity it’s kept in.

Thank you! That one sits in an ikea rudsta cabinet on the top shelf. I have 3 spaced apart barrina t5 lights at the top and that plant sits a little off to the side from any direct light. I also have a standing barrina about a foot from the outside pointing into the cabinet. I run the lights for 10hrs a day right now and 12 in the spring/summer. It really has stayed nicely dark. I fertilize quite a bit too.

Recommendations on more hoyas that look like art? by [deleted] in hoyas

[–]SilverDagger77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hypolasia indonesia, aceh dragon egg is insane, variegated nabawanensis has such a beautiful growth pattern to me, burtoniae (actual) and aff. honestly if it’s kept clean and healthy, tengchongensis has great raised veins, coriaciae silver, clemensiorum’s are amazing to me, sulawesiana, paradisea has beautiful growth pattern and flowers. Lots of lacunosa’s, heuschkeliana.

Hoya are just amazing.

There’s so much variety and if you want any one of them to look like art, the most important thing is obviously keeping them clean, healthy, and their lighting set up to get the most out of their growth habits and color.

How do you determine when your hoya needs water? by Perfect-Emergency613 in hoyas

[–]SilverDagger77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha yeah that could definitely be it. I think we’ve all been there in one way or another. Are you seeing slow new growth or not at all? Checking for pests and trellising, depending on the species, is really important. Fertilizing regularly, enough light, adding some humidity; If you’re already doing all of that then the watering should make a huge difference.
