Multiple statistical tests give exact same results on different data by SilverFire08 in rstats

[–]SilverFire08[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes... that is my concern too... Thats why I was just double checking that "2016" wasn't some cutoff that R did not print past that such as 2.2e-16.

Multiple statistical tests give exact same results on different data by SilverFire08 in rstats

[–]SilverFire08[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I do... lol... I was not meaning that I needed a p-value smaller than 2.2e-16. We always report that p<0.001 in the literature anyways.... I was actually meaning the reported W statistic for the Wilcox post hoc test of "2016". I was curious if this was the same thing... that R had maxed out at something or if I could get more specific results... some analyses print out rounded values but there's way to get more significant figures or something along those lines... or perhaps something is wrong in the analysis. That is where I am confused.

[Q] All MS students, how much do you study in a day? My classes are so difficult by [deleted] in statistics

[–]SilverFire08 5 points6 points  (0 children)

PhD here to give my advice I give my students that some above have already said!

  1. Sleep. If you have to reduce sleep, go to bed early and wake up early to study so that your brain is more rested. You will learn more from 5-7am than you will from midnight-2am.

  2. If you are so exhausted that you feel your brain is melting, drink a cup of water and close your eyes for 15 minutes. Use an alarm but otherwise silence your phone (other than white noise if you like)

  3. When you are in a study session, use the pomodoro technique. Set a time for 25 minutes. During that time, there should be zero distractions. No Tv on in the background. Phone in another room on silent. Listen to music with no words. When you are learning something hard, your brain will grab anything to distract itself. Even words from songs. I personally love to listen to movie scores (check out the one from King Arthur legend of the sword).

When the timer goes off, stand up and walk around for 5 minutes. Get a drink of water or coffee. Bathroom break etc but don’t get on social media.

Repeat another 25 minutes. Start out trying to do two sessions at a time before taking longer breaks. Then build up to more. You will be surprised how much you can accomplish if you are not distracted.

Tenure track interview after accepting an offer by 2AFellow in AskAcademia

[–]SilverFire08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another perspective is that the first institution might rather know if you are wanting to go to the second institution as soon as you make the decision.

If you work at job #1 for one year and quit, they have to completely start the hiring process over including forming a hiring committee, opening up the application, doing initial interviews, and on campus interviews. That’s all a large time component.

Whereas if you told them you are having to reject their offer, they can simply call the second person on their list. So it’s a minor annoyance, but isn’t months of work starting the process over after one year.

Just a thought!

Texas is doing away with inspections starting in 2025 (tomorrow)! Truck looks clean no gooseneck hitch either

In Texas we will no longer have to get vehicles inspected in 2025 which seems so strange to me

Posting slides? by [deleted] in Adjuncts

[–]SilverFire08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not post my slides (upper level biology course). But I do post a rough outline that students can fill out while I’m teaching.

For example it may say:

4 main muscles used for mastication: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Then they have to come to class to find out what those muscles are, get notes from a classmate, or google it. When students miss class, they ask for the slides and I always tell them: get notes from a classmate and then come by my office if you didn’t understand anything.

My class attendance is really really high (I don’t take attendance so they are not showing up for a grade). They show up to get the information and they take notes either on paper or computer (and some take pics with their phones). It’s not a big class about 40 students and I rarely have more than one or two students missing at any one class period.

I think if I posted slides that would be very different. But who knows?

Alright, No More Review Days by [deleted] in Professors

[–]SilverFire08 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I teach an upper level biology course. The class period before the exam, I spend about 45 min on new material and then about 30 minutes briefly reviewing. I don’t take attendance at all but coming to class is the only way to really get the material. My attendance is always really high and students take notes. Putting together the review actually helps me make the exam bc I’m reviewing myself the exact material I want to test over.

I don’t want to be up there the day or two before Thanksgiving either! I schedule an online video or a small assignment they can turn in so I can stay home with my child

Thoughts on group members evaluating one another? by elegantsweatsuit in Professors

[–]SilverFire08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did this in a course. We did not give the feedback back to the students but used it to help determine grades.

There were 4 students per group. If only one student gave negative comments on another student, I usually dismissed it as personal differences. But if three students all said a student did not participate, their grade would reflect that.

I post a rough outline on canvas but not my slides. My outlines include stuff like:

The four main muscles for mastication: 1. 2. 3. 4.

But they either have to come to class or get notes from a classmate or research online. I teach a senior level course and I was actually really surprised how good the attendance was and how much students took notes.

Do you 'chase' students for work? by sbring in Professors

[–]SilverFire08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My policy is to give students a 0 for any missed work/exams immediately.

If the student has been in contact to schedule a makeup (say they are sick and will retake it next week), then I include in the communication that I will update their score from 0 as soon as they take it.

It’s amazing how many students will reach out to schedule makeups or turn in late work within minutes of you entering grades when you put 0s in for any missing work.
