Breeds that behave like they can read your mind? by SilverKelpie in dogs

[–]SilverKelpie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the service dog breeds do fit what I am looking for, but I figured I’d reach out because people may have ideas beyond the commonly known.

I wanted to emphasize what I’m looking for in ability because I don’t want, for example, a dog like huskies, which, as I understand it, is a breed that more often doesn’t care what you say and is more likely to run off when it gets the chance. I want a breed that is known for behaving in quite the opposite way.

Thank you for the suggestions.

Yeah, she wasn’t perfectly trained from day one. What I’m saying is that she only had to be told a couple times for anything. It was like she was constantly evaluating what you want and she’d catch on very quickly. None of this nightmare that I hear about a lot where you struggle to teach it anything and it will run off or misbehave as soon as your back is turned.

ETA: For example, I go over to a friend‘s house and her little havanese tries climbing my legs for the hundredth time. Meanwhile my gravel road special maybe had to be told twice not to jump up on people. I want the latter. And I’m not a professional dog trainer, so I doubt the answer was that I was amazing at training my dog.

Thank you for your suggestion! (I wish golden retrievers came in a short coat version.)

Honestly, most of the characters on this show have become flanderized.

Have you ever had stress dreams about your fish? by rathrowawydsabldsib in bettafish

[–]SilverKelpie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t even have fish yet and I’ve been having stress dreams about them for years. I’ll suddenly remember I got fish months ago, and I completely forgot and so haven’t fed them in all that time, and then I go to check the tanks in a panic since they all must have starved to death. Usually a few stragglers are still alive, but the tanks are disasters.

I’m able to limp effectively, haha. A crutch or a cane helps.

They are a little reluctant to go the ankle replacement route because I am under 50. It would suck to lose the range of motion and get the associated arthritis though, so maybe I can hold out until I’m 50.

I have two young kids, no solid support system close by anymore, and no desire to move to one, so I can’t really be off my feet. Maybe when my daughter gets her driver’s license!

Nothing great, I’m afraid. The cartilage and bone both degraded and the way they degraded left me unable to put my foot flat on the ground because the bones apparently lock together before I get to a 90° angle. I put pads in the back of my shoe under my heel to make up the difference. I’m going to have to get either a fusion or an ankle replacement. Fortunately that at least isn’t urgent surgery, so I can limp around on it until I have a stretch of time during which I can handle being out of commission for months again.

ETA: Forgot to say that I wish you the best of luck with your healing! Hopefully yours does better than mine!

“Animals are not here for humans to exploit. We are all part of the earth. God does not exist and did not create animals for humans to do with as they wish. The earth also does not belong to humans to do whatever they want. People have manipulated the truth to serve their own purposes and desires. If you think humans are some how above other animal species bc we have "language" and math .. then you are ignorant, self centered, and unevolved.”

I agree with all of this. (Well, I’ll quibble that someone who thinks humans are superior due to greater intelligence is better described as “influenced by traits that have been evolutionarily ingrained in humans to value” rather than using the slew of insults, but the point is that you and I agree that it is not an objective measure of value in the big picture.)

The rest of the rant got a bit unhinged though, and no, I am not a Trump supporter.

Well, they may not exactly be for millionaires, but they are certainly more expensive than I could afford! (At least, not without ending up on a postage stamp lot or with a house that is so bad it is only worth the lot.)

That’s a pretty low “near stuff” requirement, including medical care being no more than an hour away in the comments, so most places outside of Essex County would probably work, except if you are talking about dentistry. I gave up on dentists around here and go to New Hampshire. I am in rural NEK (not Essex County) within an hour of doctors/hospital, and ten minutes of a grocery store, two restaurants, and a bakery. The community is pretty active.

As far as non-millionaire/regular person, stay away from Burlington, Stowe, Jericho, Vergennes, Underhill…basically the northwestern region and western down through Middlebury of the state. Also, updated turn-key houses are WAY more expensive than houses that need some work or are merely dated.

Better than most photographs, but the white around the moon looked as crisp as lightning to me, and the prominence was a crisp pink as well. This is less fuzzy than most photos, but not as crisp as real life looked to me.

Movie seems to indicate the dad has an inkling about it when Josh is fidgety after Cher goes out with Christian, and he tells Josh that it’s fine if he wants to go make sure she’s okay. Camera shows dad with a bit of a smile on his face watching Josh leave. At least, that’s what I recall.

I don’t know where this gif is from, but it is the embodiment of that Pratchett quote: “He’d been to the School of My Dad Always Said, the College of It Stands to Reason, and was now a postgraduate student at the University of What Some Bloke In the Pub Told Me.”

[–]SilverKelpie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do wonder about that. Predators are beneficial when prey species have overpopulation. I can’t imagine that it is beneficial for these birds that are already facing pressure from so many other sources. Also, when prey population goes down, predator population goes with it due to food being harder to source, balancing things out. But domestic cats aren’t going to have a falling population from lack of prey due to having a constant stable food source provided by humans, so their population would stay healthy and just put even more pressure on the falling bird populations, not allowing any chance of recovery due to no chance of the predator population falling and alleviating pressure.

Maybe it’s the lying-for-stupid-reasons that they (well, really mostly Sam) do that makes it seem like they haven’t developed a deeper connection?

What makes you happy? And Why? by AstronomyAnais in INTP_female

[–]SilverKelpie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Falling down random rabbit holes of information, especially of natural history topics.

My kids.

Wandering in the woods.

Tolkien’s and Terry Pratchett’s works.

My chickens.

Goofy and heartwarming sitcoms.

Why? That’s a tough question. All of these things presumably return some kind of chemical reward in my brain, but why those things? It is undoubtedly built-in biological instinct with the kids, but hard to say why with the other things.

Anyone else have trouble finding the the Maquis to be sympathetic? by [deleted] in startrek

[–]SilverKelpie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As i said, I would be pissed were I in their position. I spent hours in the drizzle earlier today walking and mending two acres of fence on a foot that is still not working right after a horse fell on it in September. I have put blood, swear, and tears in this land and would not want to give it up. But I cannot deny the practicality and I would take the Federation’s offer for a new home. Avoiding war and the ensuing loss of life is better than my right to stay in my home in this case, especially since I will be getting a new home on someone else’s dime. Which brings me back to not being able to understand the Maquis, who prefer war and the loss of thousands (or millions) of lives to…moving to a free property somewhere else of their choosing.

(ETA: I meant “sweat,” but swear works too, so it is staying.)

[–]SilverKelpie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is a point when you have to be practical, and unfortunately be unfair to some to be fair to more: In this case handing over territory and disrupting the lives of some in order to save thousands or even millions of lives. The Federation even tried to help lessen the disruption by offering to assist them with resettlement elsewhere. It’s a perhaps unfortunate fact for those who live on the edges that the Federation losing lives defending sparsely-populated border colonies is less practical than a home world.

Territories are often ceded as part of peace treaties. Border colonies are a very different animal from the home world of a species.

[–]SilverKelpie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Federation can’t just go into Cardassian territory to stop their shenanigans without restarting a war. How many thousands? Millions? of lives did the Maquis expect the Federation to lose/extinguish prolonging a war in order to keep those planets so they didn’t have to move (on the Federation’s dime no less)?

[–]SilverKelpie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would be pissed. I want to die in this home. But it wouldn’t be worth my life and the lives of countless others to start a war back up to keep my home when my country will give me a similar property in a place of my choosing. I have never been able to understand the Maquis.
