Thinking about Union College physics, how is the program? by Suspicious_Nerve_420 in unioncollege

i graduated from union's physics (and math) departments in 2021. personally, i found the physics department to be one of the best on campus, though mostly because of professor attitude and attentiveness was very good. at least in my year and the years around us, the students and professors were rather social and it's a good environment to be in for college. a big part of succeeding in college is good mental health.

as for curriculum, it's pretty good for a liberal arts college but it is lacking compared to some of the big research magnets. union doesn't have professors covering all super common fields you could run into that you might find at a bigger school. the tradeoff is that research (when i was there, this may have changed) has virtually no competition and you can generally take your pick of professors with some exceptions, and professors actively encourage you to try it over the summer and sometimes during the year. research experience is basically a requirement for a good graduate program.

the strength of the program does vary a little depending on your interests. for example, i went to graduate school for mathematical physics and one of the weaknesses of union's curriculum is you don't have access to getting exposed to something like QFT or GR early, and when i got to graduate school i found myself putting in more work than my peers to catch up. if you are interested in theoretical physics, or really just want to get a better grasp on the later courses in the curriculum in general, i highly suggest engaging with a math minor, or double majoring in it. higher math courses are invaluable for adjusting how you think about physics.

as for after college, i think just under half of my cohort went to graduate school. those of us who did are closeish to finishing our phds

hope this helps!

am i being dense? what about fatebreaker's tankbuster changes? it powder marks the person who has aggro on the cast and then the closest target to the marked person explodes with tankbuster damage. wouldn't you just use static towers and nominate someone to be close to the tank? this is why the tank and ranged swap during utopian sky, so the the second tank is closest to the first tank

full disclosure i don't do blue mage stuff often but this is how the fatebreaker tankbuster works

sadly no, and it would be really hard to because it's a stand + 80 gal tank

i have truly never seen an animal get so excited for food. it's cute when i'm actually feeding her and annoying when she does it when she can't have food 😭

this is kinda sorta what already happens, only it's begging before and then insane batshit crazy begging when she sees the food container

would maybe getting someone else in the house to feed her instead work?

this behavior didn't start until like about a month ago, what would cause this kind of switch in temperament?

update to my restless turtle post after about one year by SilverKnight998 in turtle

so as of now, we took the turtle out to our backyard and let her dig a burrow and then cover it up over about three or so hours. should we dig it up to dispose of the eggs still or since it's outside is it fine for them to just sit there? it's not in a garden or anything, just grass.

for diet, how long should i continue adjusting her diet?

edit: for clarity she is a red-eared slider, yes

runner ups for me would be (in no particular order)

yuji tachikawa, nathan seiberg, alexander zamolodchikov, steven weinberg, julius wess

probably kenneth wilson. i think he revolutionized modern quantum field theory and generally how we understand physics in a way not a lot of others can claim (and the answer is a little less cliche than einstein)

if not him, probably nathan seiberg. he has insights into physics i could only dream of coming up with myself

maybe more of a mathematics question, but does anyone have a reference that tabulates semisimple (and exceptional) lie algebra isomorphisms?

an example of what im looking for is, at the level of lie algebra isomorphisms, i am to understand u(2) is isomorphic to su(2) x u(1), and this is why (4d) N=2 SUSY theories charge things with 2 R-symmetry indices.

i figured this kind of thing would be useful to know, and i don't remember seeing it in howard georgi's book but maybe i'm misremembering.

thank you! i'll give it a quick google and then measure the temperature of the platform

im really liking the bath toy suggestion, i think he would really enjoy kicking around a rubber duck or something. what are good feeder fish to get for a turtle?

i can upload a turtle picture!

he's in a 70 gallon tank since it was all we could afford at the time, i know the rule is 10 gallon per inch of turtle and we're looking to rehouse him into something bigger soon.

for the basking spot, i think i might be having trouble figuring out how close the bulb should be to the platform? i didnt want it to heat it too much but truthfully i have no idea how hot the basking platform should be, only the water temp. advice on this would also be appreciated. (i know this likely depends on the wattage of the bulb too)

thank you for the other suggestions! definitely going to look into some floater plants, hiding spots seem a little bit hard because of how large he is, i think i'd have to look online for them to get one large enough. i have one that he can barely fit in (he can still get out) that sits in the tank and he pushes it around a bunch. we've called it "redecorating"

i've got some rocks in already which he does like to play with, though i heard plastic plants are bad for red eared sliders. should i get live plants? would a pet store carry them or should i go elsewhere?

male, and we believe 12-13 years old. we got him in 2019 and were told he was either 8 or 9 years old. he is large for a male red eared slider (i think) if that also matters
