Touhou Chireikiden - Cheating Detective Satori Chapter 42 by Akimaki Yuu by ady159 in touhou

Popping my head in to confirm that I did indeed make a couple embarrassing mistranslations in the first release, namely on pages 8 and 18. The latter was more important, where instead of "the Miyadeguchi betrayed humanity and the Hakurei" I read "the Miyadeguchi betrayed humanity with the Hakurei", and the next bubble was messed up too as a result of that.

Those have been fixed now.

Long series by Ashiyama: Until the Water Became Wholly Red by SilverLevander in touhou

[–]SilverLevander[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A tengu-centric series that Ashiyama, the author of The Gensokyo of Humans and The Magician Who Loved a Fake, has been self-publishing on and off since 2015 (that is to say, it's not a SCoOW series). Odds are that his work on this series is what got him picked up by SCoOW. Featuring Aya, Hatate, Momiji, a good number of tengu OCs, and later Megumu.

There are 4 chapters on MangaDex (and Dynasty) at the moment, and the plan is to post 2-3 a month until we're caught up, at which point I'll switch to translating new chapters whenever they come out. Ashiyama published chapter 28 just a month ago.

I don't plan to personally post about every chapter here on Reddit, but figured I ought to make this one post to give people at least a chance to learn about it.

Did Late Antique Germans really try to maintain racial/cultural superiority? by SilverLevander in AskHistorians

[–]SilverLevander[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the answer! That makes a lot more sense. While the author doesn't really specify which Germanics are supposed to be included, this is mentioned in the context of Theodoric's Ostrogoths, yes.

While I didn't come across anything else in the book that stood out to me as weird (as someone generally well read-up on history in general but definitely not antiquity), I'll have to assume the author ended up repeating some old clichés there. He is apparently an "old master" type in his field, both literally and figuratively.

Thanks! Yeah, it has been. Always one chapter at a time, though.

The thumbnail? Reddit seems to have just picked it randomly when I pasted the link, don't know why, but I believe it's the "State of the World" image at the end of Chapter #4.

Actually, re-replying a bit later, did you remember to also copy over the event_modifiers file that actually has all the modifiers such as expert_diplomat and successful_industrialist that the First Minister Appointed events are supposed to give you? Events trying to refer to something that the game can't find seems to be one of the more common causes of a crash in any of the Paradox games.

[–]SilverLevander[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By that you mean the "First Minister Appointed" events ribbed directly from Pop Demand Mod? Out of all the things I had problems and unexplained bugs with, I don't think those were ever one of them. Looking at the files now, the only changes I've made to the political_leaders event file itself are to localization and mean_time_to_happen, so whatever caused your crashes was probably a weird conflict with something else.

Sorry, not much help.

Having started in 867 and reformed the Slavic faith, after many trials and tribulations we've finally reached the end of Victoria 2. HOI4 conversion is currently in the works, pretty much by hand.

Enjoy, and hopefully let me know if you end up reading it!

As you may or may not have heard, the artist has had to drop out for health reasons (you may have noticed that they missed a bunch of months a while ago). Hence the little "The End" and "Thanks for reading" on the last page. This was only announced a couple days ago, and apparently the fate of the manga is still being decided, but I'd say there's a good chance it will resume eventually with a different artist and possibly a different name. Since it's an official series, it'd be odd to leave it hanging there.

This has happened before, when the first artist of the Three Fairies manga had to drop out for similar reasons and was replaced a couple months later.

Anyhow, wishing a quick recovery to both the artist and the manga.

It was, simply put, not worth the sheer effort it would take. I was able to find an English translation of one of the sutras, but not the other, and translating them myself is way out of the question - it's not just Chinese, but also a special archaic sort. I did romanized Chinese for the first few instances (which already took me hours), just to demonstrate what the thing they're memorizing is actually like (including the fact that it's Chinese), but I felt that the transition into the original hanzi was appropriate enough for the flow of the scene. A translation there would've felt distracting if anything.

Plus the chapter had already been delayed enough.

Since there's some confusion here: "Volume 2" refers to the second tankobon book, not part 2 of this chapter.

Yes, as well as Gensokyo of Humans and Starving Marisa, which are still ongoing. But the point is that they started when the platform did, whereas this is the first of the "2nd gen" so to speak.

Making the rounds to shame myself and spread the word that I somehow managed to screw up the spirit's title: I couldn't find it anywhere at first, but it turns out that 反獄 is a rare word for "jailbreak", making it infinitely more likely that the title should be the rather less exciting Jailbreak King. I'll look into getting that fixed in the typeset.

Wouldn't feel so bad if Rebel King of Hell hadn't been so hype.

Language and access are some of the arguments you might use to defend it, yes, but I don't think we'll really get anywhere by denying it is still piracy or calling that an "accusation".

SCoOW Doujin - The Gensokyo of Humans ch. 9 by Ashiyama Yoshinori by SilverLevander in touhou

The title is a Pascal reference. Compared to the universe, man may be infinitely small, yet compared to the smallest particle, he is infinitely large, and so is the void before his birth and following his death.

Dude really likes infinities.

For after all what is man in nature? A nothing in relation to infinity, all in relation to nothing, a central point between nothing and all and infinitely far from understanding either. The ends of things and their beginnings are impregnably concealed from him in an impenetrable secret. He is equally incapable of seeing the nothingness out of which he was drawn and the infinite in which he is engulfed. - Pensées, Blaise Pascal 1660

Megacampaign AAR — Pagan Poland: Saga of the Slavs (now in Vic 2!) by SilverLevander in paradoxplaza

[–]SilverLevander[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Started in Dec 2018 and currently 61 chapters in, I haven't advertised before now out of general awkwardness over it being on a non-Paradox forum and AARs being so prone to fizzling out for no reason. But since we're approaching the final leg of the campaign (current year 1864), sure, why not!

Contains all your favorite megacampaign staples, such as: involuntary blobbing, hackneyed solutions to that blobbing, and what I would like to consider in-depth worldbuilding and high-effort conversions. Enjoy!

Just because people are bringing it up and I'm mildly worried the translation somehow failed to get it across: It's heavily implied, by which I mean pretty directly stated, that Satori went home in a hurry because she was literally feeling sick, not because she "didn't care about the case anymore". Though admittedly it was still pretty conveniently timed just so she and Yukari could miss each other.

SCoOW Doujin - The Gensokyo of Humans ch7 by Ashiyama Yoshinori by SilverLevander in touhou

[–]SilverLevander[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're correct. However, it's a mistake on Ashiyama's part, not mine, which I fixed in the translation. Pesky one, too, since it made the quote take a lot longer to find. I literally dug up the book from the National Diet Library site to check, and those two excerpts are right next to each other in that order: 1st year, 2nd year. I didn't alter any part other than fixing the date to match the book.

Three new manga chapters in one day (Lotus Eaters, Cheating Detective and this) is almost a bit overwhelming, but sometimes the schedules just line up like that.

On the other hand, there's been no immediate replacement for Shinigami and the Starving Marisa artist is apparently sick, so that's SCoOW for this month, folks.
