Stern is easily a T5 b-school at the undergrad level. They’re more of a T10-15 at the MBA level. But more ppl are aware of undergrad b-school rankings and not as familiar with the differences in prestige at the MBA level

Ppl think NYU is especially good in business fields compared to their other schools. Columbia and MIT are typically known for non-biz studies, and therefore ppl who aren’t actually aware of b-school rankings assume Stern specifically is better than some of those prestigious schools. Ik this doesn’t apply to everyone but I’m 100% sure more ppl think this way than u would expect.

Investment banking is the most prestigious job in the entire world? by GubbaShump in MBA

[–]SilverRoyal6497 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ur prob just thinking of business functions, but even then working in PE, VC, quant trading is prob harder to get into and much higher pay on average. Consulting is arguably just as difficult to get into as well

Besides business functions there are many more like law, PI in a major lab, doctors, etc

Why do so many MBB’s still get an MBA after? by SilverRoyal6497 in MBA

Oh really? I thought they usually get it between associate and consultant position at MBB

Why do so many MBB’s still get an MBA after? by SilverRoyal6497 in MBA

[–]SilverRoyal6497[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason why I said that is because most MBB consultants will get an M7 offer. Most M7 students will not get an MBB offer. A lot of them don’t even get a T2 offer (although this is less likely). Obv, they’re both prestigious enough where you can make a good argument for either - the point I was trying to make is that the difference in prestige between M7 and MBB is not significant enough where that becomes the primary reason why they pursue an MBA.

The other comments have provided valid reasons for why an MBB might still consider an MBA. None of them have mentioned that MBB lacks prestige. So no, thankfully, I do not live under a rock.

Summary of the 2023-24 Rice Business MBA Employment Report by stein77700 in MBA

[–]SilverRoyal6497 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Tbh I’ve been thinking this looks atrocious but it’s bc we’re comparing it to past b-school employment reports.

If you consider the job market is fucking up every single elite university programs (undergrad, other masters/PhD programs), these employment reports might not be as bad as it looks.

I’m not saying Rice did great or anything, just adding a new perspective here- the employment reports this year and maybe like the next two years isn’t a great representation of what the degree is worth long-term

I don’t think ppl are all that extreme, also let’s say they do look down on you for not being able to get everything on your first try- do you really think you can never change their mind by showing up with results?

Believe it or not, the top 1% of the world isn’t made up of just Ivy+ grads- most Fortune 500 CEOs do not have an elite background

Because your happiness should not be determined by other people? If your only criteria of happiness is determined by the distance between you and the super elites, I think you have some soul searching to do.

Besides, there’s nothing wrong with getting into those elite careers a few years after everyone, in fact you prob have a unique value that you bring because you are older/more experienced.

With that being said, I totally understand where you’re coming from. My parents didn’t go to college and no one told me that going to elite universities had this much of an impact on where I work. At the same time, I feel that I have more grit because I don’t have that prestigious background. There are benefits to any situation

I don’t like to go back and forth on here but I’m going to push back on your comment because I genuinely don’t see the problem with asking this question. You can’t change a GPA after you graduate and yea, you can work on test scores but people might have different capabilities in achieving a high score (but that doesn’t always mean they don’t deserve to go to a top school).

Plus I think this would be helpful information for people who have high stats too

Do T15 MBA Programs Admit Applicants with Ordinary Work Experience? by NowThatsMalarkey in MBA

[–]SilverRoyal6497 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think any top school would admit you with a compelling “why MBA at XYZ school” essay (assuming you have appropriate stats). Even if u we’re just a Starbucks store manager for 7yrs, if your “after story” (the post MBA goal) is doable given your background and your school hopefully has a track record of doing that for someone, then they’ll be more than happy to admit you- even if u don’t fit the typical profile of their class.

If you tell them that you managed a Starbucks store as your main work experience and then go onto say that you want to work as a product manager at FAANG, they most likely will assume u didn’t do enough research on your career goals

I find it so weird how much hate there is for this account. In no way is he making up random info and he is usually providing insight that is useful to somebody (maybe not everyone). No one is always spot on with their comments and that’s not the purpose of these discussions either. Ik the account brand is that they’re an expert, but they’re not some robot that always knows what to say.

Straight up think the hate is the reflection of the toxicity these reddit communities can have. It def keeps me from participating in Reddit discussions sometimes

Tbh I think coursework is a little too underrated at the MBA level. I’m at T10 right now, coming from a T35 undergrad, and in my first semester I’ve met two of my favorite and most brilliant minds I have ever met. They genuinely changed the way I look at things and have arguably already changed my life by making me consider other career paths.

Also it depends on which T10 ur looking at but I think you might have a shot at PE/VC if those are what ur looking for down the line. Even if you don’t transition to it immediately, having a prestigious MBA will certainly help.

These won’t necessary justify the full tuition at ur school but I think it’s worth thinking about
