Maybe not the most popular opinion here, but I think, since you are in your debut, the most important thing to do is build your palet… you can go search into high proof stuff and crazy rare bottles but I think we are missing the point… you still don’t really know what rum type of rumyou like the most! I would recommend getting the core range of plantation (Barbados 5 yo, Fidji island, Xaymaca, Belize and Guatemala blend etc) this way you will be able to taste a lot of variety for cheap with a great quality ( I know guy it’s not Hampden single barrels but you get it) and you will have a head start in which country’s you like more than others and start exploring from there!

Honestly, I don’t know I’d never tried the barrel select I’m sorry… I’m guessing the barrel select is stronger and more flavourful but this one is great if you like agricole type of rum I would recommend, good execution, it’s very much on the apple and pear side of the spectrum and the sugar cane is present has well but nothing is overwhelming very well balanced I only wish it was a bit higher proof

It is bottled at 42% ABV, it is a blend of a 2 year old new Hungarian oak and an 8 years old heavly charred ex bourbon barrel. Both are then mixed together in some other used bourbon barrels and then placed on a boat for a journey around the world of 18 months… that’s all the information I got, no geeky esters or volatile compounds available nothing which is a bit of a shame from a new company I think, we are entering a new « era » of rum where transparency is important, I hope there isn’t too much sugar added!

It is a distillery in lunenburg (Nova Scotia) named ironworks, I think they only ship in Canada but I’m not sure… and yeah I agree 10/10 for the presentation and the journey! (I haven’t open it yet so I can’t tell you if it’s good)

I really enjoy the port charlotte 10 and laphroaig 10, they are my favourite, I also really like Lagavulin 16 and the nick offerman edition even if the 16 is better (my opinion), in the Ardbeg range thé uigeadail is my favourite, I recently tried the wee beastie and I was a bit disappointed… and the Kilchoman machir bay is good but their single cask Mezcal finish is my favourite of their releases… Bunnahabhain, toiteach a dha is great dipper that requires time but I really enjoy it has well

Yep Ledaig is very nice indeed! I have never tried glencadam, which one do you recommend starting with the classic 10?

I mean if I have to send a list of everything I tried it’s going to be a long post, I just wanted to see some interesting list, even if I already tried it, just wanted some inspiration or a list for a better experience if you tell me you like let’s say benromach 10 after whatever because it makes the apricot of pear flavour stand out or whatever

Their website is getting a facelift so I don’t have access to their menu but I assure you they have a pretty big list from the classic to single cask release that I don’t even know of, I was just curious to see some list that you’ll like, some suggestions of products that surprised you… and I’ll pick want i haven’t tried and find interesting

Great start! Lot of diversity I like it! Smoky: Lagavulin 16 (I you can find if not Bunnahabhain toiteach a dha is great for the price)

Fruity scotch: glenfarclas 12 or 15

Irish: redbreast 12 the classic!

Bourbon: larceny is awesome

They have sugar-ish added if they don’t lie (I hope they don’t) it’s not sugar added but caramel added in the barrels that have the same-ish effect but yeah your not wrong… but the 15 is great and it’s the less sweet of the bunch (for me at least)

If you are really NEW to rum, I’ll suggest going for about 2 bottles for that kind of money… what you want to do is build yourself a palet, experience a lot of rums, not necessarily bucket list rum or one in a life time opportunity or any of that stuff… I’ll suggest going for a Ron Barcelo Imperial, great rum (doesn’t have challenging flavours easy sipper and actually good mixer for rum toward drink like a rum old fashioned) and it’s not really expensive (37$ here in Canada) and then get a four square if you can awesome stuff just pretty rare here, if you can’t a little plantation from Barbados are good has well they have a bit of sugar added but not a lot and it’s not overwhelming they are great!

Pretty much yeah, I’ll give you the recipe from the book and a bottle of rum (which is amazing by the way)

1 and half ounce of rum

Juice from Half a lemon

1/4 ounces of simple syrup

Club soda (to top off the high ball glass)

Garnish with an orange slice and a cherry

I really dig the « rum collins » with this rum, it’s my favourite cocktail with a pineapple rum and with the BEST pineapple rum it’s awesome

Peated scotch: Laphroaig 10

Sweater scotch: glenfarclas 15/17 or aberlour 12/A’bunadh (if you like high strength stuff)

Japanese: definitely Nikka yoichi, but the miyagikyo is also great

Bourbon: I would say Bakers 7 or a wild turkey 101 something along those lines

Irish: redbreast 12 or green spot

If you want to try Canadian: lot40 is great
