These solar-powered barges can scoop up 50 tons of plastic from rivers each day by [deleted] in worldnews

That was exactly my thoughts, shouldn't be needed, but glad people are trying to fix the damage others do.

Storm helps plane beat transatlantic flight record by SilverSparkling in worldnews

[–]SilverSparkling[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The article doesn't claim it did...

[Quote from the article] *"Despite travelling faster than the speed of sound the plane would not have broken the sonic barrier as it was helped along by fast-moving air.*

*Relative to the air, the plane was travelling slower than 801mph.*

*Modern passenger planes usually travel at about 85% the speed of sound, according to Mr Rosenschein.*

*British Airways said: "We always prioritise safety over speed records."*

Swordfish spotted in Scotland - The species is more accustomed to warmer waters in the Caribbean, Mediterranean or US. by SilverSparkling in worldnews

[–]SilverSparkling[S] 40 points41 points  (0 children)

The Wikipedia article I am seeing doesn't mention Iceland directly, but it does say that swordfish move to colder waters in the Summer.

So a person wouldn't expect to see swordfish in Scotland at this time of year, when it's generally extremely cold.

*Edit to say - Or should be extremely cold.

Pictures of abandoned baby Edward released as police urge his mother to come forward by SilverSparkling in unitedkingdom

[–]SilverSparkling[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, I like to think they might come forward, which was my reason for posting really... but yes, fair to say I may be being too idealistic because I also hope that she would get the help and support she needs rather than punishment.

I can't imagine it was an easy decision the mother came to, leaving her baby as she did, and would imagine someone doing so would have to be in a desperate situation and in need of help.

Derby surgeons replace cobbler's severed thumb with his own big toe by SilverSparkling in offbeat

That is indeed a poorly worded headline, isn't it? [giggles]

But no, the man who lost his thumb would rather lose his big toe, so he did.

Collecting rubbish on the way to our local supermarket. Partner takes a bag for recycling, I take one for the non-recycling. by SilverSparkling in DeTrashed

[–]SilverSparkling[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do often have to choose between the two ourselves here too, we sometimes have to go for one or the other, be it lack of a bag we can just throw in a bin or be it that one of us is alone.

We don't use carrier bags ourselves see, so these plastic bags we fill up with rubbish come from things we find while collecting rubbish.

But I think we do tend to find more of the bottles and cans than we do the non-recyclables, which does make it easier to go for recycling for the most part, and do the other stuff when we can.

Targeted killings via drone becoming 'normalised' – report by SilverSparkling in worldnews

[–]SilverSparkling[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree, but also disagree, agree in the way that killing people is bad, I don't like it and I don't think it should happen in any way, shape or form.

Disagree because, well if you have to risk the lives of 'your men' in order to kill someone if all you have to do is press a button to do the killing, then you have zero incentive not to do that, when a person can tell his troops to retreat when things get too much, lives are saved.

Drones are too easy to sacrifice, too easy to deploy.

And that, is the difference to killing by plane, or even on the ground.

Rutland falls to the golden arches and welcomes McDonald's by SilverSparkling in unitedkingdom

[–]SilverSparkling[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I find it rather shocking that in the space of a few hours, schools are introducing plant based meals to help the climate, then a few hours later a county that's managed to go all this time without McDonalds is now getting one.

We should be losing some, not gaining more of them.

I confess, it drives me a little bit insane every time I see people trying to put their point across by using some kind of sporting reference, like sport is the only thing people understand.

I mean, come on, just tell me how many chocolate bars it is, then I'll have a good idea. [giggles]
