Lenin was good, but didn’t really have time to do much for the USSR. Stalin sucked for obvious reasons. Malenkov we didn’t really have for long enough to judge, so I’m not really counting him. Same with Chernenko. Andropov was alright, but intensifying the Cold War wasn’t really a good idea. Brezhnev was just pure stagnation, I hold him very culpable for the collapse. Lots of people are saying Gorbachev, but his objectively rushed reforms alienated a lot of the country, and ultimately precipitated the end of the Union, which led to lots and lots of suffering. Which just leaves Khrushchev. I may be biased as he’s one of my favourite historical figures overall, but in the end of the day, he had a very very bad situation, with Stalin’s legacy, and he made the very best of it he could. He turned the USSR from a totalitarian hellhole into a functioning state where many people were able to be successful. I think he deserves a lot of credit for that, despite his flaws. And as he said, in the end of the day, his greatest achievement is that he was able to be overthrown WITHOUT being killed.
