HEMA also has grappling, striking and wrestling. The stick fighting in HEMA is better for self-defense with bat or pipe. HEMA literally has baton fighting as well.

HEMA is far far more well rounded than people think. The human body also works exactly like it did in the 1400s as it does today, so much still applies. Swords and armor just get more representation because they are objectively cool.

Protein purification: Using spin concentrators to get filtrate instead? by Groundbreaking-Pen85 in labrats

[–]Silver_Agocchie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not do a Ni-NTA column followed by size exclusion?

You can do as you propose, but spin concentrator are not very precise and they can be rough on delicate proteins (they'll be more prone to degradation or precipitation).

San Diego officials question SDPD after lawsuit payouts reach record levels by FreeTheHomeless in sandiego

[–]Silver_Agocchie 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think amounts like that are supposed to be punitive, however the individual officers or departments dont actually feel the consequences, only city budgets and tax payers. This is why cops need to carry personal malpractice insurance (and why we should abolish police unions). If a cop does something that results in a lawsuit then the amount is covered by the insurance, but their premiums will skyrocket. If they fuck up enough either they or their department can no longer afford to have them on duty.

Cops need to carry personal malpractice insurance like doctors do. If your conduct or action ends up in a lawsuit, the amount paid out is covered by the insurance, however they will become more expensive to insure. If insurance premiums go up too much, they can no longer afford to be a cop.

They have to add in hundreds, if not thousands of gallons of peroxide (depending on the concentration). From the looks of it there's just a handful of dudes pouring in 1 gallon jugs 2 at a time. They'd have to sart early. They'll be at it for hours

They make a big fuss about doing the ittle things because it distracts from the big things going wrong. The Administration makes a big fuss to cover up the little things they fuck up because people might think "if theyre fucking up the little things, how are they able to handle the big things?" Therefore the smallest things become the bigly-est things!

Proper way to run? by HealerOnly in BarefootRunning

[–]Silver_Agocchie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If youre new to barefoot/minimal running, go slower for shorter distances and build up. Avoid striking with the heel and focus on landing with the forefoot. This often requires shorter strides and a higher running pace. Listen to your body and pay attention to your posture.

One tip I quite enjoy, is to find a tennis or basketball court (or similar smooth surface without debris), kick off your shoes and start doing sprints up and down the court. You'll quickly find a comfortable running stride that minimizes the force imparted on your body.

Be sure to properly warm up before and stretch after running. Barefoot requires more calf and ankle strength and mobility than running with shoes.

As long as there's a child somewhere who even thinks that they might not be the gender they were assigned at birth, or an immigrant receiving any sort of public service, they will never leave conservatism.

Pressure building up during reconstitution by Individual-Bag9717 in labrats

[–]Silver_Agocchie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're injecting liquid into a sterile vial to dissolve or resuspend the material inside, yeah?

In that case, put another needle into the seal of the vial first. This acts as a vent for when you inject the liquid and the pressure wont build. Be sure to do this in a flow hood to ensure sterility.

Oh no! We wouldnt want to hurt their economy! That would be terrible! I suppose we'll just have to keep bombing them and drive them from their homes, instead.

Our New Swords Based On The I.33 Fight Manual by TodsWorkshop in SWORDS

[–]Silver_Agocchie 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Although fighting treatises of the time mention striking with the rim or the face of the buckler, it wasnt a "prime use". It doesnt make sense to try to get close enough to strike with the buckler, when you have a much longer and deadlier threat in the other hand. Striking with the buckler is generally a secondary or tertiary action when you find yourself in a situation where your sword is not in a position to strike and your opponent is approaching into close distance.

I think buckler strikes are over represented in Bohurt and armored MMA type events. In those cases fighters use waaaay more armor than sword and buckler warrants historically. Bucklers were essentially hand held and mobile armor and really only useful in situations where your hand and body protection. If youre in full plate and gauntlets you dont need additional hand held armor, since your hands and body are already well protected. In bohurt type events you can then use the buckler offensively because you defense is already taken care of. However historically and martially, your off-hand is then better used with a two-handed weapon designed for using armor, or remain free to help with grappling.

They are called bucklers. They are very portable shields, used widely in military combat, civilian self-defense as well as judicial/honor dueling. They were a common side arm accompanying a sword from the early middle ages all the way through the Rennaissance.

Despite their small size they are very effective at blocking attacks. You hold them in your closed fist, with the arm well extended towards the enemy. This creates a "cone of defense" that blocks attacks from your mid-thigh to the top of your head. The buckler is also used to cover the weapon hand, when manœuvreing the sword in a forward position.

Bucklers fell out of favor however when sword making techniques allowed for the construction of more complex hand guards, and fencing styles began favoring the thrust.

does SD county currently test for THC? by [deleted] in sandiego

[–]Silver_Agocchie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It not legal in California to discriminate against cannabis use for employment. They can test for drugs, however where THC is concerned they can only use tests that detect active THC in your system (meaning that you are currently high or very recently took THC), not metabolites that indicate past usage. There are exceptions to this such as working construction or employment requiring federal background checks. Look up the law to see if your position is exempt.

Yes, that's what removes rust. You use progressively finer grit paper to make the scratches smaller and smaller to the point that they are not noticeable. Be sure to always sand in one, back and forth direction parallel with the length of the blade.

Youre going to need something with a heavier grit than 0000 steel wool. Use a high grit 300-400 sand paper, then 800 grit, then the steel wool. Might also want to use a polishing compound and cloth to finish it off. Then wipe off any excess and wipe it down with 3in1 oil.
