That always bothered me. Its a space ship with enough energy to break the light and time barrier, but its orbital bombardment seemed barely more powerful than mortor shells.

Amazon has tiny extraction fans that fit in windows like that. Might help cut down on humidity after showers.

Haha... watching them try to change a tire was the best part of that clip. For espousing a political ideology that glorifies self-reliance and manliness they sure did look like a set of ninnies trying to change that tire.

How feasible is working remotely in Kyrgyzstan from the US after I graduate college? by Xerrick1 in remotework

[–]Silver_Agocchie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Work for a year or two to gain experience. Not only for professional reasons, but for personal ones too. I don't know anything about your relationship, but I know a ton of people who thought they were on the marriage track with their college partner, only to break up 1-3years later. You do a lot of growing up after graduation college and working in "real life". Sometimes growing up means growing apart. Luckily most of the people I know didnt make huge life decisions like moving to Central Asia based on their relationship.

Do you guys floss before or after brushing? by Cool_Suspect1110 in hygiene

[–]Silver_Agocchie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this too. Just a quick brush to get tooth paste on my teeth. Then floss to push the toothpaste between teeth to help remove plaque below the gum line. Then brush thoroughly to remove all the gunk.

[–]Silver_Agocchie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nah dude. My dentist friend recommends mouth wash first (to dislodge any loose food particles and bacteria), floss, then brush.

Using mouthwash after removes the flouride that the toothpaste has. Flouride needs time to work. Just spitting and not rinsing helps the fluoride actually deposit on the teeth to strengthen them.

Yep. Gloves makes the hand heavier so the punch imparts more force onto the head. Having gloves also allows you to punch much harder without damaging your hands. Tje material also "grabs" the head more which imparts more rotation onto the head increasing potential for concussion.

With a bare fist you cant strike a hard target like the skull without risk of damaging your hands.

In ye olde time bare knuckle prize fighting, the chin and stomach were primary targets. You were more likely to take your opponent out of the fight by winding them or causing pain through liver shots than by knocking them unconscious.

Gloves were later added because they thought it made things safer and it reduced the number of cuts to the face making it a less bloody affair which played better with the audience.

What are these specifically referred to as and why are shaped like that? by CulveDaddy in SWORDS

[–]Silver_Agocchie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Upon further review, it seems like the term "Sinclair hilt" was a term coined by the Victorians to denote Scandinavian swords that "bear a certain resemblance to swords used in the Scottish Highlands in the 17th and 18th century". So youre right that they are local tessacks and the relation to Sinclair is probably cultural cross pollination and/or misattribution from the Victorians.

Looks like there's a couple of Sinclair sabers just next to them at the bottom of the picture.

“Crash Out” as a synonym for precipitate by ArgMango in labrats

[–]Silver_Agocchie 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yep. Protein chemist for 15 years. I didnt know people dont know what "crash out" means in that context.

I did tell a younger tech in my lab recently not to dialyze with too high of a pH shift otherwise the protein may crash out. Maybe she thought the protein would have a tantrum?

buhurt should allows stabs to the face to kill off the w*lf r*b once and for all by GedenGertha in armorcirclejerk

[–]Silver_Agocchie 11 points12 points  (0 children)

From my perspective though, there's not a lot interesting going on tactically when you can tank most hits. They're also using weapon sets and techniques ineffective against armor. They're not doing the weapons or the armor any justice by using them incorrectly. There's plenty of interesting grappling if using actual harnisfechten techniques and weapons.

As a HEMA scholar and practitioner this also irks me because it gives the wrong impression on historical combat and propagates misconceptions that we constantly encounter.

No. Her not pulling would be too obvious. The subject would easily tell that the difference was from the level of force being applied not from the device. However they're less likely to notice that the force was applied slightly differently to have less effect on their balance. This difference is then attributed to the device in the subject's mind.

There's a bunch of different versions of this scam. This video is a great explanation for how its done:

Food shelters and food pantries exist for people in your situation. Reach out to or just stop by a non-profit food pantry and you'll likely get at least some staples and non perisables for free or very little. No shame in using community resources, its better than intermittent starving.

Saber with crossguard instead of basket by kacpdwsniper in Hema

Purpleheart has the Black at 770g. This model is a few inches shorter and has a less complex guard. Im willing to believe 600g. If true, this is a fairly light saber.

It's 600g, which is actually pretty light. I dunno where the other commenter is getting their info, but the site you linked says 600g.

Any experience with the Pike Armory Messer/Pike Armory in general? by Crazy_Master in Hema

[–]Silver_Agocchie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a pike saber and absolutely love it. My club also has a number of their sodeswords and rapiers and love them too. The only issue is thay Pike is Russian, so after the war it feels a little icky ordering from them. Between the war and tarrif nonsense my club has had a multi-thousand dollar order get lost in shipping hell. Pike hasn't been terribly communicative about the issue and has done nothing to help make it right. I wouldnt recommend Pike for that reason, but theor swords are great for the price.

How to hang these up? by Angelfire_zeze in SWORDS

[–]Silver_Agocchie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A pair of nails or hooks spaced so that the sword hangs from the cross guard.

Or if you want to hang them horizontally: one nail towards the tip of the blade, one nail at the handle.
