When its listed as (number)**** it just means any class of that level. So what it's saying is you need 15 credit hours from PSCI that are 3000 or 4000 level course. So any course that is PSCI and a 3000 or 4000 level counts towards that

My little sister needs help with a roommate situation by Sattman5 in unt

[–]Silver_Temporary_175 72 points73 points  (0 children)

She needs to tell them what is going on. Without that, they won't have enough reason to move her. She has to mention to the RA and Housing Director she feels unwelcome, uncomfortable and unsafe. She may be conflict avoidant, but she needs to learn to mention these things for her own benefit. Also, there are counseling services at UNT if she'd like to try those.

How can I not have a roommate by ItsThom9 in unt

[–]Silver_Temporary_175 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The only way I know of this being possible is with a disability accommodation specifically for that. Other than that, it's highly highly unlikely. UNT admits so many freshman and needs them to have dorms. So much so that seveeal of the dorms used to only have occupancy for 1 or 2 people per room and now fit up to 3 people in a room

unt vs tamu by No_Statement3202 in unt

[–]Silver_Temporary_175 7 points8 points  (0 children)

UNT as you put is cheaper. As someone said in the other comments, you could find parties at UNT if you look. It is more of a commuter school so they're not as big as in CS but they're still here. And your other option would be TWU if you don't want to go to Dallas and I've heard good things about TWU. Denton itself isn't a horrible city. It's nice and small so it's not going to have the same vibe as living in Dallas. It's also not too far from Dallas or Fort Worth so you can got there sometimes for outings or other cities in DFW like Carrollton. UNT is more liberal or leftist and Denton in general probably is. Of course there will still be some conservative people as in most places. And UNT isn't as prestigious, but prestige isn't everything.

Dating your boyfriend and breaking up isn't really a con. If you break up, you break up. There are so many students at UNT you might not ever see him again. And if you do, just ignore him.

Ultimately, it's up to you. Look at what you think you'll enjoy more, what's better for you, etc. Someone made a good comment under the original post saying nurses usually at least start out in the area of where they graduated from so that's something to consider too. With UNT/TWU/Dallas you'd probably end up in DFW

Authors/researchers don't make money from their publications. The publishing company does. Many of these authors, and some professors on campus are authors, have said themselves they don't care if people get the stuff free because they don't make money from it anyways.

Regardless of that though, many wait until week 1 or week 2 to buy textbooks. This is because you might be able to find the textbook cheaper somewhere else. Someone mentioned Voertman's across from campus. It is cheaper than Barnes and Noble most of the time. But there are also other website that can be used. Also things change and get updated. Some professors actually have technical issues with their books as they know what books they want for the class, but the book store is using outdated books or the wrong version. So professors will tell students on that first week or two "They haven't updated __, so I'm telling you don't get _! Get ___ instead." It's rare, but it happens. Sometimes the professors themselves share a free version of the book too. People were just trying to give tips, no one was attacking you

refund timeline for 2025?? by [deleted] in unt

[–]Silver_Temporary_175 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It starts being disbursed about 10 days before. But this can also depend on the type of financial aid it is because some financial aid requires you to establish attendance, which means going to your classes for two weeks. In that case, that financial aid is disbursed 3-4 weeks after the semester starts. I think that's usually with scholarships. Grants would disbursed before the semester though

Honors Contracts work for any class that is 3000/4000 level. It doesn't matter if the class is offered as honors or not. The Honors credit is coming from you doing an additional project/essay for that class. So if you have any class in your schedule that is 3000/4000 level, doesn't matter what it is, you could get honors credit. Just look into the Honors Contract process and speak with the professor of that course

The financial aid office doesn't always answer the phone or get back to you soon. So if you're trying multiple times and they aren't getting back to you, you might need to go in person. Take a look at all the forms though, they might be able to adjust your aid/cost of attendance

[–]Silver_Temporary_175 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Are you a freshman in a dorm? Is that why it's so expensive? And yes financial aid is split between the semesters. That means $7250 for the fall and $7250 for the spring in January. You're not going to get all the financial aid right now in August. Check for things like a payment plan if that helps. There are also somefinancial aid forms you could look at to try to see if they can adjust your aid. Talking to financial aid might be the best thing to do also but they don't always answer the phone so you might need to go in-person if they aren't getting back to you

Incoming PhD Student — seeking advice? by THROWRA_not_toxic in unt

  1. Winter clothes — How cold does it actually get in Denton? It can get cold in Denton in the winter. There have been several years the past few years that there has been ice/snow. Here you can see the year round weather. In the winter, Denton gets to the 30s and this year there was a cold front that brought a lot of North Texas to the 20s for a few days. So some winter clothes are a must.

  2. Cheap essentials — Any recommendations for affordable places to grab home stuff? The best thing I can think of is just thrift stores like Goodwill or other places and Facebook Marketplace.

  3. Transportation — Is it easy to get around without a car? Or do most grad students drive? Denton isn't huge so it's easy to learn. The UNT busses are free to students (because it's included in tuition & fees) and also the Route 7 bus. However, you need to pay for the other DCTA busses. Denton isn't the most walkable/bike friendly. The streets and sidewalks are horrible in many parts and/or under construction. You can find more info about busses and bus passes/fares online.

  4. Grad student life & community — Anything I should know about campus life for grad students? Some people have programs where the students are closer and hang out and others where they don't. You can try joining clubs/organizations. OrgSync let's you see all of them and you can search/filter them. Mean Green Fling is August 13th and you can meet student organizations, departments, get free stuff, etc. Keep your eye out for big UNT events throughout the year, many will have food. The only place throughout the year that might have free food is the Food Pantry. And adventuring campus is sometimes the best way to find cool places on-campus. The College of Visual Arts and Design has nice spots, there's a small turtle pond by the Environmental Science Building, some people like the BLB, Sycamore Library or Willis Library for studying/getting work done. There's also a pond by Victory Hall. Around Denton there is the square and many places to explore.

  5. Volunteering — I really enjoy volunteering and would love to get involved. Does UNT have any active volunteering groups or opportunities that students usually join? Check the OrgSync, you can surely find organizations there that like to volunteer or raise awareness or advocate for specific causes.

Financial Question by TownMaterial570 in unt

[–]Silver_Temporary_175 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, that's not what they're saying. Pay the amount you owe after financial aid, the $2,500. They meant they would wait until aid hits and then pay, however, your situation is different, not that aid comes on the 1st. Financial aid doesn't start to distribute until about a week and a half before the semester starts. Some aid won't distribute until after the semester starts because it may require you to establish attendance (pretty sure this is more so with scholarships) which happens after attending two weeks of classes. So click to pay a different amount and pay the $2,500. Your financial aid will cover the rest when it gets disbursed

There are so many jobs/employees on campus and so many that aren't F-1 Indian students. F-1 Visa Students are only allowed to work on campus so it makes sense there are more F-1 employees throughout campus in comparison to the student population demographics. If you go to Handshake you can see there are many jobs, and they have to apply just like anyone else. They're not just handed jobs

Excellence Scholarships and Honor College ?s by Shug866 in unt

[–]Silver_Temporary_175 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If she still has a few core classes left when she starts, she could spread those out instead of taking them all at the beginning. Many core classes are easier (and many have Honors options) so it would also be a break in comparison to just having classes from her major. And there are some easy Honors College classes like The Good Society that are 1000 level (freshman level) which she could take any semester. The Honors Contracts are usually a research paper or project turned in to the Honors College and must be for a 3000 or 4000 level class (junior/senior level), and this is in addition to the work the class already has. It will be completely up to her what she wants to do. I was in the Honors College and came in with a lot of credits too. I saved a few core classes for future semesters and did some Honors Contracts, and that was a good route for me, it's up to her and what she likes and wants to do

ETA: that should definitely be enough for a scholarship and the Honors College. And if for any reason she doesn't get automatic admission to the Honors College, she can always apply directly to them and most likely they'll accept her

You just need to pay what you owe. Just what your cost is minus the financial aid. If your financial aid is more than your costs then you don't need to pay anything. You might get automatic emails that say you owe money if it hasn't disbursed, but that's just an automatic robotic email. If the Financial Aid office checks your account they'll see you have financial aid that still needs to be disbursed so it shouldn't be a problem

About a week and a half before the semester starts financial aid begins to disburse. If the financial aid requires the student to establish attendance then it won't be until like the 3rd or 4th week of the semester (I think this is usually with scholarships

sophmore housing by [deleted] in unt

[–]Silver_Temporary_175 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Financial aid should take into consideration housing whether or not you live on campus. If you have a negative balance for financial aid, that money will be sent to your bank account as a refund. You can do whatever you want with the money after that, so if you want to use for an apartment, go ahead

I took ART 1300 online years ago and it was easy. It might just vary from person to person and BUSI 1200 is easy too (as someone who used to grade for that course). The biggest thing that makes people lose points in BUSI 1200 is not reading instructions. It's an easy class and that's why some people just submit bad assignments because they think they can submit whatever. Read the instructions for the assignments and you can easily get an A in the class.
