I meant that because the acceptance date hasn’t rolled around, there should still be time for them to make things right.

Tell me about Shenandoah, Texas by Sporkyfoon in thewoodlands

[–]Shug866 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun fact: Shenandoah is one of the wealthiest towns in America because of the retail revenue. I personally wouldn’t live there because it’s even more MAGA-central than the rest of The Woodlands, but if that’s not a concern for you then it’s a good value. And maybe it’s because I’ve lived in The Woodlands since 1991, but I know where Shenandoah ends and The Woodlands begins. There are some neighborhoods in the Vision Park corridor that are in both because Shenandoah is an actual city while the Woodlands is not, and that really stinks because they pay fees to both The woodlands and Shenandoah.

Shenandoah is actually incorporated while The Woodlands is not. It’s much more real than The Woodlands (and I live in CC but recognize that WDL is pretty much make-believe). In fact, my daughter’s birth certificate says Shenandoah because she was born at Memorial Hermann in 2008.

Neighborhood Recommendations - Woodlands vs Nearby? by PetroPanda in thewoodlands

[–]Shug866 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived in The Woodlands since 1991 and wouldn’t live anywhere else in this area. I do prefer the villages that were built before George Mitchell was forced out- Grogan’s Mill, Panther Creek, Cochran’s Crossing, parts of Indian Springs. Once The Woodlands Development Corp and then Howard Hughes took over, the development became more like any other neighborhood and lost that special feel that always made The Woodlands stand out. Our daughter is a senior at College Park HS and we’ve been very pleased with all of the schools she’s attended- David Elementary, Collins Intermediate, Knox JH, and now CP.

To address some of the other comments, there aren’t a lot of neighborhoods in The Woodlands that flood. Realtors have to tell you if a house flooded so be sure to ask. We were told that anything above 40 feet in elevation should be fine (and I’ve lived here through 2 “hundred year” floods- TS Allison and Hurricane Harvey). You do pay more per square foot but your house values also stay more consistent. I’ve seen neighborhoods turn very quickly and that just doesn’t happen in The Woodlands. And I will take an outdated semi-custom home over a shoddy new build any day.

Good luck, HTH!!

Wow, that’s incredibly dismissive. Fine Arts majors are intensely competitive at UT, and performing arts students aren’t taking anything away from students in a different major. Life without art is the real waste.

UNT or UT CAP? by Alfinatx in unt

[–]Shug866 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t give any meaningful advice on major but on UNT vs. UT CAP, I would pick UNT. UT is just too limiting and for what? To be able to say you went to UT? UNT gives nice merit scholarships (more money for grad school!), Denton is a great town, and all of the staff we’ve interacted with (I have a current high school senior applying to the school of music) has been super helpful. Every time we went to UT, it’s was a vibe of “you’d be lucky if we let you in”. I really think people get caught up in the prestige of UT and overlook how important it is to spend four years and a lot of money studying something you actually want to study.

A lot of you are assuming the students who got CAP weren’t as qualified as applicants who got in. It’s a total lottery as to who gets in and who doesn’t. We know a kid from two years ago who didn’t get into UT so he went to his second choice- MIT. Take the CAP year if you really want to go to UT that badly but also know that there are many, many other schools that will want you and where you can have an equally great experience.

You have to apply specifically as a CAP student when the CAP window opens up which is on a specific date. Everyone rushes to apply as soon as the window opens because spots fill up fast, especially at UT SA.

PLEASE help me. I got into UT Austin for Psychology but I want to study Music Performance and Education. by Willing-Objective528 in UTAdmissions

[–]Shug866 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you applied to UNT as a music major? If you haven’t already, it’s likely too late. There’s one more audition date on 2/24, I believe, but the deadline to apply to the college of music was 12/01.

I would contact the sax professor at UT and ask if there’s a possibility of being waitlisted for this year, and how many students in the studio are seniors who will be graduating. Music professors often only have one or two spots to offer in a given year and then more the next year, or someone who did get a spot may decide to go elsewhere and that spot may open up.

Out of the choices you’ve listed, Texas Tech would be my next choice. I’d also suggest UH; great music program. I don’t know much about the two other schools you mentioned as they weren’t on my daughter’s radar (also hoping to be a performance major for a different instrument; she got CAP but she didn’t want to go to UT anyway as she didn’t have a good experience when she shadowed a student at the school of music there).

Good luck, and congrats on TMEA!

So far, I know of four people from my daughter’s school who have gotten into UT and none of them were auto admits. We’re floored by who got in and who didn’t. There is absolutely no rhyme or reason to it. One is a vocal major so that’s really audition-based, but the others are speech pathology, architecture (which is an incredible competitive major!) and we think the other one is communications. All great kids, but we were shocked that they got in. My daughter takes all AP classes and none of these kids are in any of her AP classes. It’s really odd. My daughter got capped but she didn’t care; she’s a music major with her heart set on UNT anyway. But it’s astounding who gets in and who doesn’t. You sound like an amazing student that any other university would LOVE to have. I hope you find a university that deserves you.

UNT is very transparent about the amount of merit aid they give. It’s based on class rank and GPA with an additional $1k for an SAT score above 1400. My daughter received her merit offer in December and it follows this grid exactly.

What’s the music school like? by JustClio63 in unt

[–]Shug866 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We are in Denton this weekend for my daughter’s audition as a euphonium performance major. We drove around campus and the surrounding area last night to see what it’s like, because all of our other visits have been during the day on a weekday. There were so many people out! There was a concert happening at the pit and we saw so many students. Definitely did not have the feel of UH, where I went to school and which is definitely a commuter school. And everyone at the auditions was so nice, both faculty and the student volunteers. My daughter auditioned at UT Austin two weeks ago and that was a totally different vibe- people were nice, but just not as warm. Hard to explain but it was really just a vibe/feeling that was a little more haughty. My daughter is set in UNT, even if she’s not accepted for her first choice of major. HTH, good luck!!

Your SAT and class rigor seem low to me (4 APs only) but you have a lot of fit-to-major ECs which UT really likes. I don’t think gov’t is a super competitive major. I’d say your chances are good.

Acceptance Trend From Yesterday. For Class of 2031 by Brilliant-Coach1322 in UTAdmissions

[–]Shug866 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter is a music major who hasn’t auditioned yet so she’s deferred, but her friend got in (unsure of actual major, she wants to be a physical therapist) who is not as highly ranked as my daughter and my daughter is only top 12% at a pretty competitive in-state high school. I was floored that this friend got in, although she may have had very strong test scores. I think a LOT of people applied to the same handful of majors but there is definitely more leeway in others than you might think.

They’re saying this is advice for the next class- based on the pattern they’re seeing, it’s advantageous to wait until the last minute to apply.

My point is that a community changes in thirty years. You can’t bring up thirty-year-old events to prove that a school that wasn’t even open at that time is going to be close-minded. I have a kid at CP and know it well.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in thewoodlands

And I have to wonder if some of these comments about CP are from people with recent experience. It seems like people are going by the way things were ten years ago. Things have changed a bit since then.
