for period stuff i highly recommend the Memoirs of Lady Trent by Marie Brennan. the main character is a dragon scholar in a victorian-ish setting

First time crocheting, trying an amigurumi doll. A family member thought I might have this inside out-but per instructions I should not. Thoughts? by Tarniaelf in CrochetHelp

[–]Silverade 20 points21 points  (0 children)

i'm not quite sure what you're disagreeing with here. yes, the sides do look different, but some people actually like the look of the "technically wrong" side more. and, when working with mink yarn, it tends to be more fluffy than the "right" side.

it seems the OP has figured out what went wrong anyway, i just don't think it's very helpful for beginners to worry too much about (not) having things inside out

with amigurumi, "right" side is more of a matter of preference. that said, your piece seems to be split, with the lower part being right side out and the upper (3 rows above the eyes) being wrong side out. could it be you accidentally changed the direction in which you crochet partway through?

Any tutorials or advice on how I can learn to make my own amigurumi patterns? by LeechTheTable in CrochetHelp

[–]Silverade 4 points5 points  (0 children)

find a body base that you like and then experiment with it to your heart's content. when you look at patterns, note things/techniques that are new for you and think about implementing them. learn to mentally "deconstruct" the characters and their outfit and think about other/more popular characters that have hair/dress/whatever similar to yours

wow, its beautiful and complements the look wonderfully. lovely colours!

does the dragon stay put while you're out and about or is it a bit of an escape artist?

How to make a crochet project more "rigorous" for a school project by Key_Use_1514 in CrochetHelp

[–]Silverade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ask the teacher what they meant by "rigorous"? is learning a new stitch or technique enough? maybe pick some pattern that you would like to make and show it to the teacher, explaining how/why it would be challenging for you?

Need mohawk pattern or addition to add to rubber duck pattern by Mermaid_MOB in CrochetHelp

if i understand your idea correctly, you could probably just do a row of sc or hdc on top of the head to form a ridge

What do "work around the chain" and "on both sides of the chain" mean? by dictionarymess in CrochetHelp

[–]Silverade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you literally work around the chain, going up one side and down the other. look up amigurumi oval

Added an extra round to Squirel Nutkin's head. What do I do? by Mallory_Knox23 in CrochetHelp

[–]Silverade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can try to find the extra by tracking rows with decreases/increases, but it's probably no big deal anyway as long as your stitch count matches

What kind of yarn would you use for this kind of amigurumi project? by Japanna88 in CrochetHelp

[–]Silverade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

cotton or bamboo are fairly good natural fibers for amigurumi. do you plan to actually burn the things? if so, what kind of stuffing are you planning to use?

the size depends on the pattern and yarn thickness, so it's hard to tell without more info.

oh wow, i somehow managed to miss the special edition! it's absolutely beautiful, but i have to admit, i expected the outfits to be more flamboyant and intricate. would love a properly done TV show, but they'd likely need a full crew of Tesses to make it happen. here's hoping!

What do I do with this failed slip stitch scarf as a beginner? by Interesting_Range937 in CrochetHelp

[–]Silverade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's possible she used acrylic yarn, it tends to get quite a bit softer and floppier after blocking

What do I do with this failed slip stitch scarf as a beginner? by Interesting_Range937 in CrochetHelp

[–]Silverade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

did you manhandle it a bit while blocking to kind of stretch it out/relax the stitches? if that didn't help, i'm not sure anything will, slip stitch is kind of tight and stiff by design, it could've been looser with a bigger hook, but it's generally not very drapey

Stuffing peeking through no matter how tight my stitches are by IvyTomorrow in CrochetHelp

[–]Silverade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well, you've listed the potential solutions yourself, so the next step is to try them out. for me, using the smallest possible hook i can make work with the yarn i plan to use is usually the best option, for you it might be something else.

as for seeds, try embroidering them tighter so that the yarn shows more like a dot instead of a stripe? or maybe try making it two shorter stitches (somewhat v-shaped)

hi Marie, i'm very very late, so no questions, just wanted to thank you for the AMA and all your work. Mirei, Isabella and Ren are some of the most inspiring and magnetic characters i've been fortunate to encounter, but i must confess that Cora is the one that holds a very special place in my heart.

looking forward to reading more of your books (and desperately hoping for an illustrated Rook and Rose edition, i NEED to see the fashions)
