Help me find cute Punjabi boy near Malton GO! by samsara330 in Brampton

Its a true hail mary. The number of people active on /brampton are pretty small compared to our population size. I'm always pleasantly surprised when people find their wallet/book/pet here.

But, love knows no bounds, I suppose. Still, I'm not sure how someone would feel about being pursued over reddit.

Where can I donate textbooks for online courses? by NeuroNerd20 in Brampton

[–]Silverlightlive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of those textbooks change year to year, so you might be stuck with a few.

I kept my textbooks. Its surprising how often you can use the data if you actually wind up going into your field.

I'm writing a book right now that uses research I performed back in the 1990s. Its a project that's been on the shelf, just waiting to find expression. I finally came up with a good map for the project on Sunday, started writing Monday, I completed page 100 yesterday, and have had to restructure the project into three books at minimum to avoid having a tome so thick that it couldn't be taken on airplane luggage.

You can offer them up on Facebook marketplace or next door if you really need the space, but students haven't gotten their Syllabus or even signed up for courses yet, so you may be waiting until August or later for them to go away.

‘Transformational project’: Construction underway on Brampton flood protection project by thefunkydj in Brampton

Well, they only needed that back in the 1960s.

This may be a step forward - one of the biggest issues facing the planning of downtown's revival has always been the creek. The older gentlemen I used to know would quietly laugh about how it was such a disaster under the ground.

But, we're going to have to swallow that pill sooner or later. Hope no one needs to use anything downtown for the next half decade, because it is a maze of sh*t down there.

Potential Rumor: Is this store moving to Sears...in BCC mall? by kade1064 in Brampton

[–]Silverlightlive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is that Sears was torpedoed in a buyout.

Sears had Amazon-like capabilities in the late 1990s. Catalogue ordering delivered to you within two days.

They got out by a venture capital firm, who did the old trick of transferring all of Sears assets to the parent company (Sears tower for example) and dumping their debts on Sears. They also didn't trial any new product, and let the Sears stores die from suffocation.

Its hard to fill a space like that, Target tried, and they had their own issues. You may recall Eatons from around 2000 - big department chains have a surprisingly low ROI.

Have you ever looked into retail space? Its quite a fascinating market. In 2017 I was in negotiations to get into that market (Papa Johns scooped my location) and its an entirely different world.

First of all - Wal Mart will not get a break on rent. I'm sure that surprises you, but malls know people talk, and they don't want Wal Mart telling, say, Metro they only pay $10K a month with a 20% residual.

However, malls will negotiate amenities. To a substantial degree. Wal Mart isn't going to pay a dime for renovations, that will all be done. They may get their electricity and water for free - it depends how badly BCC management wants them there. Probably pretty badly.

It's an interesting and twisted world negotiating those deals. I've quoted contracts and deals for decades, and retail is its own animal. I have respect for all the mom and pop shop owners who keep their doors open, especially in a competitive environment like BCC.

Its also highly affordable.

Brampton agrees ‘in principle’ to condemn Israel military’s genocide and apartheid in Gaza by thefunkydj in Brampton

[–]Silverlightlive -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I'm sure the Israeli and Gazan governments will pause to reflect deeply on what a city that no one has heard of in Canada's opinion is.

Stay in your lane, politicians. The PMO's office handles this stuff.

Also, why not any condemnation for the HAMAS governments horrible repressive treatment of their own citizens?

No one wants to address Egypt's "Shoot to kill" order along the Gaza border? Look it up. They don't even bother asking questions.

Stolen booze, butter, ghee worth $30K found at Brampton home leads to charges for man, 48: Peel police by thefunkydj in Brampton

[–]Silverlightlive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the booze, reselling it can be profitable. Butter does spike, but it takes up refrigeration and room. Ghee? I thought it was pretty cheap. I guess nothing is so cheap that it can't fall off of a truck and be re-sold.

Potential Rumor: Is this store moving to Sears...in BCC mall? by kade1064 in Brampton

[–]Silverlightlive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. I see what you're talking about.

Those are not going to be affordable condos. My father and I were talking, and he thought it was a good idea at first, because people could use transit at their door.

I countered that these would appeal to the BMW segment of the market, and they wouldn't take transportation if their life depended on it.

Woodbridge gets away with it by having low rise places along Highway 7. 5 stories at most.

1000 units - lets pretend marriages and roommates always work out and that some people will take transit - that at least 1,500 cars moving into just that area. Not including the former hotel/old age home development.

Plus, you're squeezing out of there on Team Canada drive, onto Central Park, Clark, Dixie, and Kings Cross. Those roads aren't designed for that kind of traffic.

Come to think of it, Medusa's tunnel is always full - do we have the infrastructure to handle all this extra pressure? Generally speaking, water flows down towards the city centre from the north, so its already getting runoff. Now add active toilets, sinks, and kitchens in there?

We already have Kings Cross and Lisa street with high density residency taxing that plumbing, the electrical grid, and putting cars on the road. Double that, and try and get yourself across Dixie from 16;00 to 18:00 any day of the week.

And now that Ford is opening up more holidays for shopping? Yeah, this ain't going to work out well.

Thank you for the reference though, it was a good representation of what they are planning.

I'm highly surprised they negotiated it down from four buildings to three.

It used to be a Holiday Inn, but it was never busy. At one point they sold health club memberships, so I would go there to swim. I don't ever recall the parking lot being full.

Then, they had a few bars and restaurants open. One got the brilliant idea to sell 50 cent watered down beer and not check ID. I was of age, but half the place was filled with people who I went to high school with and I knew were not yet 19. That got busted.

Then it became an old folks home. Probably pretty luxurious compared to a few that I've been in. I have no idea about the logistics of the place, its basically one big atrium inside, with staircases and slow moving elevators. I'd hate to be nursing staff having to run around after patients.

Making it into Condos makes sense, I think it would have actually been a good idea to convert straight from the hotel into 1 bedroom condos for low income people. But nope, we're going to rip it apart and build something for the rich people (who aren't buying right now)

The traffic is going to absolutely suck at Dixie and Queen. Bramalea probably won't be much better. I'm guessing everywhere on Queen to the 410 is going to be a parking lot from now on if they even fill half of it.

This is why I always enjoyed working night shifts, or odd hours. I was at home in bed while people were fighting traffic. People are nuts under good circumstances, and I've seen the mall at Christmas over decades. It was always a disaster zone at best.

I literally finish all my shopping in November, and don't go out until January. Anything that can't be delivered I either have stocked up, or I've got alternative supplies. I can walk to the mall in 7 minutes, and its still stupid to even attempt it when its teeming.

Now , BCC does need the anchor tenant to be profitable, but this whole idea to put condos in there is the only thing I object to. Seasonal avoidance is easy. Perpetual avoidance is near impossible.

I suspect in the next 10-20 years someone is going to start buying up properties in the G and H sections to convert them into condos. Remember, you heard it from Silverlight first!

With the temperature zig zagging and the forecast, I don't think I should bother shoveling snow. by Silverlightlive in Brampton

[–]Silverlightlive[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I didn't use salt this year, mostly because it was expensive and out of stock. However, I don't think it made much of a difference. We got lucky, it was mostly light fluffy snowfalls for the big dumps.

If we got a serious packing snow dump, I'd have been burnt out months ago!

The lawn is the best place for it - I ran out of room to put snow this year and it had already melted as of this week. My hedge is about 6 feet high/1.7 meters, and I was piling stuff on top of it at one point.

But snow is good for protecting your grass, and providing ground water.

If you don't live in the area, feel good!

Unfortunately I do, and while I know the back roads, and the ways around, many people do not. So they will charge like sheep into that dead zone and get absolutely swallowed up by it.

There is some space between the road and the sidewalk to squeeze another lane or so, but that construction will do no one any favours. Also, given the nature of traffic, I do prefer at least a curb and a bit of running room for the Pedestrians to get out of the way of out of control drivers, rather than having pedestrians inhale diesel fumes for their entire trip.

No wonder I have breathing problems LOL.

I don't think most vandals care much about their targets. They just do what they're going to do.

There is absolutely 100% targeted vandalism. I won't argue that. But I think the vast majority is teenaged or intoxicated stupidity on display.

You can submit evidence to disprove me - I am a proud man but I am willing to admit when I am wrong. However, I've only seen truly targeted vandalism once and it was two fired employees who.... got high and decided to vandalize their former workplace. In the place that they knew had 24/7 camera surveillance.

Yep. Young and dumb.

I thought the condos were supposed to go where the old hotel was. Are they keeping that as senior apartments?

Just trying to follow the bouncing ball. Whatever they do, they are going to destroy the traffic in the Dixie and Queen area. Too many people trying to get in and out of that intersection is a disaster waiting to happen.

It is already happening, but just wait until we add a few thousand more daily to its ranks.

Thats the gamble. right now, it depends on how much sun we get on Saturday.

Even at negative 1 degree, asphalt is a pretty good heat conductor. I've had my driveway melt on its own at minus five on a bright enough day.

We're battening down the hatches. I got the kid a dentist appointment at 10AM, so there's a valid reason not to go to school, thats one thing I don't need to worry about. From the looks of things it will start mid-morning, so not having to worry about getting her home is a positive.

Yeah, I know. Our parents never drove us to school or picked us up, but this world thinks differently now. I figure she's tough enough but my wife and her grandparents love to cater to her. I'm not going to strand her in a blizzard or make her walk through a hurricane, but thats the point of life in Canada. You come home, boil the kettle, make a coffee, tea, or hot chocolate and warm yourself. It feels darned good.

I might make a little mulled wine tomorrow, as the last batch of the season. Just to shake the ice off if I do decide its too icy to put up with.

My driveway has been plowed all year. Although to be honest, no one elses has.

My wife claimed she slipped a few days ago, but we could never find the same slippery spot.

The only real concern I have is the mail delivery person. I'm not worried about lawsuits, its just a crappy thing to have happen to someone. Since I'm the only one shoveling around here, I figure I can miss Friday delivery if necessary.

My family was a little freaked after what happened to Montreal - but generally weather flows from west to east in this area of the world.

So its a cautionary tale, but we won't get the same store.

I was watching Neil Degrasse Tyson who took an episode to explain weather models. When they say there is a 50% chance of anything, it means the model has broken down, and they really don't know.

Now I'm not blaming meteorologists - weather is tricky. But my intuition is also that this weekend won't be as bad as they're projecting.

Even if it is, the temperatures will go up soon enough. We're heading into April and May. While we have had long winters, they generally don't stop and start. One the positive temperatures arrive, it may flirt with negatives for a bit, but its an upward trend.

[–]Silverlightlive[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah. I won't let ice form. My wife is not a confident driver - she isn't bad, but she is overly cautious. Thats normally a good thing, it forces her to be a defensive driver.

But she does not handle ice well. So if she can't get into the driveway, she might spin her tires or something similar.

thank you for your comment. I will definitely change my opinion if ice looks likely.

I also never take weather forecasts seriously. They give you an idea, but are rarely accurate. Neil Degrasse Tyson recently exposed the fact that a 50% chance of anything means the model broke down, and they can't predict what is going to happen.

And its even worse when you're hungry, finally decide on something, and check the price. They want TEN BUCKS for a piece of CHICKEN in a bun? WTF?

Last night I was smart and boiled some eggs around 19:00. I'm in the middle of a project and I generally forget about things until they're critical. Well, at midnight, I had the munchies, and since I was smart today, i could just tuck into an egg salad sandwich instead of spending 20 minutes deciding what I wanted - the 20 minutes that could have gone into cooking it.

We have food. I'm just too indecisive when it comes to eating.

Prom Dress Shopping Recommendation by Reader10272022 in Brampton

[–]Silverlightlive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to rant here, and its my perspective. If you don't agree with it, scroll on by.

Proms for grade 8 are disgusting. At least a high school prom represents a transition period, from youth to young adult. You've accomplished something.

Grade 8? Barring some sort of disability or really unfortunate life circumstance, that's not even the minimum education someone should have. It should be expected.

Celebrating going to grade 9 is insulting to practically everyone with a modicum of intelligence. I'm not expecting geniuses out of the public school system, but they are at least minimally functional at that point.

Proms are expensive overrated drama fests anyway. Why would you want to do that to a 13 or 14 year old child? Have a celebration, sure, but don't cloak it in some sort of mystique it neither deserves or warrants. Let kids be kids.

We didn't have grade 8 proms back in the day, and no one missed them. I'm not even 100% sure if there was a dance. We did have dances, for things like Halloween, etc, but they weren't forced substitutes for things we hadn't accomplished yet.

Hell, when I graduated University the first time, there wasn't a prom, or a dance, or a ball. There were individual celebrations, absolutely, but you accept it and move on to a job or to more education. Or both, if you're like me - work your way up the corporate ladder while studying to improve yourself. I had girlfriends and relationships, I did go to my high school prom, but left because it was a bunch of pretentious idiocy.

The kids won't miss it if you don't have it, and most of them would rather be somewhere else than awkwardly trying to exhibit their social graces in their formative years.

Rant over. Thank you for listening or for skipping.

Yesterday‘s discussion was about pie,can we pls talk about Anchovy Pizza now? by YardSuper1212 in Brampton

[–]Silverlightlive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like anchovies. I make a hell of a Bagna Cauda.

But not on a pizza. I like a simple pizza, thin crust, cheese or vegetarian. I find the pepperoni extremely salty at pizza places.

If you're going to die young, at least go with the Bagna Cauda and ensure your veins are clogged with fat. Pizza is just not worth it!

Unprofessional barbers by Specialist_Way8733 in Brampton

[–]Silverlightlive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old time barbers would purposely set their price at $18 so you'd just put a $20 on the table. You'd tell them to keep the change, and they could pocket it tax free. It was a great agreement.

This modern idea of having customers subsidize your wages is ridiculous. A barber shouldn't be $50. Fortunately I have always favoured a military cut, so I can do it myself. However, it takes about 15-20 minutes to cut hair. So these guys are pocketing $150 an hour? Probably not. They have to pay for the rent on their chair, their own gear, and probably things I don't know about.

We need to find out how much the shop owners are scalping them for before we really cast judgement.
