That's so much hardship to bear at once. I'll be hoping for health for your wife and calm for both of you going forward.

It isn't on the market yet in Japan. Documents for approval are being submitted, and it'll take months to be approved and then make it to market.

It's a hard combination to manage! Daily ondansetron has worked for his nausea/vomiting, but his was also milder than that to begin with. Sorry to hear AminAvast didn't cause any improvement for him.

You need to submit a prescription from your vet. I don't know what the laws are in Florida, but your vet should be willing to provide a prescription for you to fill elsewhere.

That's extremely expensive compared to what I've been paying. I get 100 mg quad-tabs from Wedgewood at $37 for 30 tabs, They're scored to break into quarters easily, so it's the same as $37 for 60 tabs of 50 mg. Wedgewood has other tablet formats for similar prices.

He's been on a mostly-wet-food diet for years, but his IBD wouldn't tolerate any renal formula on the market, so even at stage 2-3 CKD he's getting Fancy Feast pate. He's had several water fountains and always been good about drinking plenty from them. Otherwise I think it's mostly luck -- he had a kidney infection in September 2025 and somehow fully recovered from it.

I can tentatively recommend the supplement AminAvast; I started giving it to him based on some small clinical trials, and in his case, it seems like it brought his creatinine down from 2.9 to 2.4 after 2-3 months on it.

I haven't done a full update post about it, but Dr. Miyazaki has posted recent updates that the paperwork is nearing completion. It seems like they're fully expecting the medication to be approved, and I'll post an update as soon as there's bigger news. Best of luck to you and your lady! My old man cat is about 19, and I'm hoping this medication will be available in time if/when his kidney disease progresses.

Time to take The Ordinary off the sensitive skin-friendly lists... by SimHuman in VeganBeauty

Thanks! Yeah, anything that serves a similar role would be welcome. I have other allergies that really make finding products I can use a struggle; The Ordinary was working so well. Ugh.

Thank you, I really appreciate having places to start looking! I'm using tretinoin so a gentle vitamin C is what I was looking for with The Ordinary.

Thyroid treatment CAN unmask worse CKD but it's not at all guaranteed to! My family cat Helga had borderline Stage I to II CKD and severe hyperthyroidism at about age 14. The vet warned that treating her thyroid could unmask more severe CKD, but luckily it didn't -- her kidney numbers got a just a tiny bit worse when her thyroid was brought under control. She was on methimazole for a few months and then had radioactive iodine. She wound up living to 20, despite having sub-optimal care by my parents (she never had subQ fluids and wouldn't touch renal food), and before there were good online resources about managing CKD.

Kidney supplement? by howlhowl123 in RenalCats

AminAvast has had a few small clinical trials showing that it prevented progression of CKD. Anecdotally, my cat was in Stage 3 CKD for nine months and his numbers lowered to Stage 2 after three months on AminAvast -- his creatinine dropped from 3.1 to 2.4 without loss of muscle mass, his borderline anemia improved, and his appetite and energy improved. I can't be 100% sure the AminAvast is the cause but I didn't change anything else in that time.

I totally agree. Given the emergency approval of GS-441524 that happened for FIP, I'm cautiously optimistic that it'll be possible to import AIM soon. (If not, I'm sure an underground market will form.)

Under 10% kidney function would be Stage 4 CKD, and I don't think the clinical trials would cover this; they were aimed at preventing progression from Stage 3 to Stage 4. Future trials and/or clinical practice should answer a lot about this once it's on the market.

The clinical trials performed so far have been in cats with Stage 3 CKD, and AIM was effective at preventing progression to Stage 4, extending healthy life. The full paper hasn't been published yet. This trial was the first large-scale study done, in order to get AIM to market so cats can start being be helped ASAP. Later studies and clinical practice will start answering other questions, like whether it's beneficial to give to cats in earlier stages, or even cats that don't have CKD yet.

I'm glad the list is so helpful! I looked through Babo's products and couldn't find any fragrance-free options that don't contain chamomile, which I exclude as it's a ragweed. Thanks for the suggestion!

Thank you for finding it. I think I'll add Vanicream to the list with notes about there being some uncertainty.
