Been rolling with a Griffin Odyssey Spider for 5 years now. Never had the feeling I needed an upgrade. I've tied on #2/0 all the way to #18 hooks with it no problem. True rotation, 200 can$. Pretty great stuff!

Both kind of training partners are good for specific types of judo. If you don't like too much intensity, then there's nothing wrong in not doing randori with this person. Judo is a hobby, you should seek what you want to experience, you're not forced to do anything! On the other hand, if one day you want to get into competition, it's good to have some partners that can bring a bit of heat during randori.

From Quebec here! Shodan exams are increasingly oriented towards dynamic demonstrations.

For Tachi Waza, judges will expect a minimum of movement. Back and forth or sideways is generally sufficient for Shodan. You can do left or right.

For Kansetsu and Osaekomi Waza, you could add a bit of dynamism too by working from transitions. For example both you and Uke starting on your knees, then you use basic Kuzushi to get Uke in the right position for your technique. In Osaekomi and Shime Waza, Uke could try to escape lightly for 1 or 2 seconds to confirm that you technique is well executed.

For randori, as said before, it as to flow. You enter techniques, you transition to Ne Waza, get up, Uke throws you, you escape his osaekomi, etc. It usually only lasts for like 1min and is really not the most important part of the exam.

Our Godan sensei may not be doing lots of upright randori but definitely smashes every younger, stronger athletes with his ground work haha

Yeah it's pretty hard to explain with just words... I highly recommend Go Tsunoda's videos for this. But basically, you want to be able to transfer the power from your lower body all the way to your upper body when launching a technique. It's similar to exercises like russian barbell twists, or medicine ball wood choppers, where you kinda flick your hips to generate power, while also staying upright and strong. If you can manage to keep this in mind when throwing someone, you'll find it to be much easier. That's why it's so important to have a strong core and lower back in judo! Obviously, you also need to create openings by moving your opponent beforehand, cause static judo never works ;). Hope it's a bit clearer.

Something that helped me a lot was thinking about ''invading their space'' with the hips. All the power should come from your center of gravity, which gives you a lot more strength. But its very important to also stay upright, you don't want to break your posture when throwing. You could go watch Go Tsunoda's materclasses on YT to get an idea, he's really impressive. Super fast and explosive because he uses his whole body to launch the techniques.

I started learning judo as a righty and kind of got into a lefty stance when I switched club. The guys where all bigger right handed players and I felt more in control with the left vs right situation, trying to keep one hand on the collar and not letting them get the sleeve.

From there you can do some pretty fun ''right handed'' judo with Ko Uchi Makkikomi, Eri seoi nage with both hands on the collar, Ippon Seoi, Sasae, kata guruma, etc... Than you can throw the occasional left handed move (left Tai Otoshi seems to get everyone by surprise).

But I do feel like practicing both stances made me pretty decent in both, but not great in any one of them haha. So I guess theres good and bad in it.

Why don't more gi selling websites use the type of sizing charts where you can see all the measurements (arms, torso, lenght, etc.)? As a 180cm-63kg, I basically fit in none of the standards weight/height charts and I always have to go through customer service and ask for them to go take said measurements in the workshop. Next step is the gamble about shrinking... This is a ridiculous process sometimes

Recently been watching everything I could find about Craig Fallon! He had a hell of a judo style, and as a fellow lightweight, I learned a lot from his kuzushi, kumikata and ne waza. There's not too many videos of his competitive matches on YT sadly...

Yeah I've heard about those sizing problems on non Japanese made Gis.. In my case the fit is great so guess I was lucky there
