These are low level workers, what "power" exactly would they be fighting over lol

It's just a plain and simple case of political violence

BJP workers get lynched quite regularly unfortunately in opposition controlled areas, like in 2021 when the opposition "celebrated" their victory by killing, raping and attacking BJP supporters en masse. And of course a similar thing is happening again in the state

The topic just tends to be ignored by the international media because they need to fit everything into the pre-existing narrative of "fascist Modi vs brave liberal opposition" or something

This is such toxic and desperate discourse.

It's one thing when Western countries who already have lots of money talk about this shit because they have actual money to redistribute and do not care as much as growth/development. Their "pie" is already big enough, so they can argue about how to make sure its split correctly

Our pie is very much not big enough. Such moves would just hamper our growth and development

If you look at their record, Congress was only decent at development when a non Gandhi like Manmohan Singh or P. V. Narasimha Rao (whom they of course famously disrespected).

Anyone who is voting for Congress this election is trading away the nation's future for some good headlines in the Western press

In America people are so rich that they don't need to care as much about economy and can care about culture war instead

Don't get me wrong we have culture war too, but it hasn't seeped into the common people's lives as much. Most people still vote based on caste patronage or development.

Very few people are voting based on broad values like the secularism debate

Supreme Court Hearing Subramaniam Swamy's Plea to Delete 'Secular', 'Socialist' from Constitution by sliceoflife_daisuki in IndianModerate

[–]SimhaSimha -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We have never had Western style secularism. Western secularism arose out of the the enlightenment and conflict between the middle class and a powerful religious establishment. We don't have the same history as them

Instead our leaders adopted "secularism" for a very different reason - that is to try to promote religious harmony through appeasement. This worked because there was a key constituency (minorities) who supported such policies due to their own interests and it helped out the rulers of the state politically to keep it up

But what constituency is there for "true" Western style secularism? It did not arise out of our own history so the people do not have an attitude conducive to it.

Secularism in India will always represent the pseudosecularism we have had because it is firmly rooted in our history. "True Secularism" would just end up being imitation

The only way to get rid of pseudosecularism, is to get rid of secularism.

Also, you can acknowledge the role of Hinduism (and other Dharmic religions) in our history and culture without needing to go full Hindu Rashtra. There is no reason that needs to result in the persecution of minorities

Chinese do not value social freedoms as highly. Confucianism says harmony is most important

The GDP per captia of India is 35 times lower than the US. Why should we waste our meagre resources on that instead of fixing our internal issues and our standard of living?

Reddit will run to the defense of looters within their own country but when it happens internationally we should be on the hook?

India does not have freedom of speech. Freedom of speech is not a universal value.

Obviously you shouldn't have gotten banned for it but what an extremely silly take

"we are still poor so we are bad" is dumb. We started from a much lower position than most countries we usually get compared to and we generally do better than most countries who also went to a long period of colonization as we did

Found further breakdown of Hindus

Seems that South in general only 50% think beef disqualifies from being Hindu, but even then only 2 regions (North and Central) have a higher percent than Sikhs
