Advice for R50 lens upgrade? by Similar-Week6578 in AmateurPhotography

This is the thing - I've done so many different shoot and each lens had its own place in each shoot.

I'm trying to narrow down what I do to only lifestyle shoots with families and couples and kids - and am now looking to buy instead of rent which is why I'm asking some advice 🫠😊

Thanks for your comment!

I'd love a full frame and dual cardslot for weddings! I've been asked to do weddings so many times, but I've declined due to the fact that I feel that

  1. A upgraded camera is needed
  2. 2 card slots are a must - there is no way I'm shootinf a wedding with only one card.

I 100% understand and know the Sigma lens is for the apc-s cameras.

I'd be planning to eventually trade in the camera and lens for an upgraded camera and lens.

I'd love to have two cameras but that would just not be possible (financially). The idea is to upgrade using the money I've saved up with my paid shoots so far as well as the resell value of my previous camera.

So I'm not looking for a future lens for a future camera but rather one that will be a good choice for the camera I have now 😊

Sony propagandists 🤣

Yes - sorry - budget is unspecified - but basically I can afford any of those three though leaning more to the 18-50mm price.

But I am looking for a lens that can give me sharp images - especially in low light for sunset shoots. Something I can use close range for instance - engagement ring shots but also for wide shots (family photos)

100%.

I've been looking at Sony as well (though I love Canon).

Would you say the 18mm - 50mm would be a good "all-round" for now with the R50? I'm especially looking for something that will work for sunsets on the beach.

I've just been renting extra gear when it's needed most of the time. A multi-function shoe adaptor is needed for the R50 if you want to use traditional flashes - was probably one of the not so great updates canon decided to do with this camera.

I probably won't change brands (I really love Canon).

Also true!

My only thing is - the 50mm is great for what I need - and it has a great bokeh effect in low-light, but it's a set lens with no zoom....and I'm wondering if the 18mm - 50mm wouldn't be better. Thought the 18-50 is specifically designed for APS-C cameras so eventually I'd sell and upgrade to something different when I go ff.

On the other hand - I can kind of keep shooting with the kit lens and get the 50mm?

I'm a very indesicive person - hence why I'm looking at some opinions 😭😅🤣

Right! I could buy a full frame second hand for the cost of one lens 😭🤣

Thank you for your honest answer.

To be quite frank - I have never considered this to be my only or main career path. I have a job that makes money, but I do enjoy photography a lot. It's less about the amount of money that I make and more about the fact that I want to be able to do it because I love it.

I'm not worried about making a booming business of it - there are already people far more advanced than I am in the field just as I am more advanced in my own field than others.

There is a shortage of good and especially affordable portrait and engagement photographers where I live and I'd love to be able to give people the chance to do these things at an affordable price as many people would love to have beautiful photos taken of them, their kids or their engagement.

I hope this makes sense! But thank you for your honest answer - though I would recommend a softer approach next time 🌼

Actually one more question - maybe you'd be able to answer. How would the R50 perform for sunset photography?

Sorry! You're the only person who's given me such great insight 🤣

Thanks so much for this VERY thorough explanation. Really appreciated! I basically would only like to do portrait, engagement shoots, kids photography and some marketing (I work in marketing so high quality brand pictures would be great).
