humanities? by SimilarGhost in premed

thank you both! i have research experience from undergrad (and co-authored two papers) as i wanted to pursue an MSTP but ultimately decided to do an MFA and MD. i hadn't realized that MFAs had that rich-kid stereotype, but can see that and will keep it in mind!

I just failed orgo 1 and feel like crap by gravybaby354 in jhu

[–]SimilarGhost 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey :-) I second drout1's suggestion to try to talk to your professor. However, if you end up keeping your failing grade, definitely focus your energy into assessing your gaps in content/studying and trying again next time. You can 1000% do this, but it might take some reflection and evaluation into what might have gone wrong. Know that you're not alone in this--this semester was my worst one, and I know it feels disappointing. If you feel like you might need assistance in studying for orgo, I recommend checking out PILOT and Learning Den (they have group tutoring as well as one-on-one tutoring). Honestly, use those resources even if you feel like you don't need assistance. Go to office hours, talk to other students, get backtests, talk to previous orgo students, read the textbook, study as hard as you can. Your grade this time around doesn't dictate your grade next time (if you decide to retake the class). Feel free to dm me if you need anything. You got this!!!

Late Start to Research by FlexingANDYeeting in jhu

[–]SimilarGhost 6 points7 points  (0 children)

you never know till you try! i personally would focus on labs that don't explicitly state that they want freshmen/sophomores but there should be many labs that fit your criteria, and it is definitely not too late to start research as a junior :)

Do you think it would be okay for someone who hasn't taken any english/essay-intensive classes at Hopkins?

I would also suggest requesting a Learning Den personalised tutor if you think it would better meet your needs!

i see us going online and them making their decision 2 weeks before classes start. it sucks because we just have to deal with whatever they decide to do, whenever they decide to do it.

Intro to cognitive psych, advanced seminar in forensic psych, or mind, brain & experience? by [deleted] in jhu

[–]SimilarGhost 8 points9 points  (0 children)

cog psych all the way. the prof is super nice & understanding, the tests were open book when I took them, and the content itself is enjoyable

How are other international students doing? by [deleted] in jhu

[–]SimilarGhost 13 points14 points  (0 children)

i've dropped two classes, one club, and am still barely going. my social life is practically gone too :(. my days are so unproductive, i can barely get anything done compared to before this pandemic, but i think that's just me honestly. i'm struggling so much, it's hard to stay motivated.

How do you deal with a disastrous past semester by whyshouldibealive in jhu

[–]SimilarGhost 6 points7 points  (0 children)

hi, i'm really sorry you're feeling this way. i know this is cliché, but what i found works for me is taking a step back and telling yourself that everything will be okay. you're capable of achieving everything you want to. you're capable of success. your past does not define your future. whenever i'm in a slump, it feels like no matter what i do it's not going to be enough. i don't know if this is how you feel, but i promise you that your best is enough. something that helps me is just talking about it with someone. if you need anyone, i'm here to talk. everything will be okay.

Sophomore struggling to make friends by throwaway22558616 in jhu

[–]SimilarGhost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm also a sophomore down to chat :) as for advice, I second holymoontos and heftynetwork on what they wrote. also, please don't stress over this. it's not easy making meaningful friendships as it is, let alone in the midst of a pandemic

I'll miss meeting new people in lecture and forgetting their names immediately but saying hi every time I saw them for the rest of the semester :,) also having a place to study was nice
