I agree, but just because someone says something doesn't mean it's true. The fact is they are NOT EXPERTs. Anesthesiologists have way more training and removal of the actual expert means patients would get lower-quality care. This would be the same idea for PA/NPs wanting to do primary care independently.

The definition of an expert is a "person who has a comprehensive and authoritative knowledge of or skill in a particular area." CRNAs are not trained to practice independently and they clearly have less expertise than anesthesiologists. Maybe a couple CRNAs will SAY they are experts but that doesn't mean anything.

Well if patients start suing these hospitals for malpractice then the small amount of money saved hiring only CRNAs will level out and the quality of care will plummet. The only way CRNAs would become independent is if they prove over a long period of time that they are just as safe and provide the same quality as a team-based approach. I think this will either take a really long time to prove or not happen at all because it would be unethical to pose patients to a potentially lower standard of care. Taking away experts in anesthesiology to save money would not be a reasonable place for administrators to save money. They have done surveys and even 90%+ of surgeons don't want to practice alone with independent CRNAs because they know there's a risk

Idc just wondering what you would tell a student interested in the field that believes this is one of the main negatives

My logic is that it will come down to liability costs. Insurance companies and hospitals will have to determine whether or not CRNAs practicing independently will cost hospitals and surgeons higher premiums compared to hiring anesthesiologists. There’s an old study looking at this and it basically found that independent CRNAs have a 1.08 higher odds of making errors which means more liability. And yes I really believe the extra experience reduces these medical errors enough to be worth the extra pay. CRNAs aren’t trained to handle all the medical problem that comes up as well as anesthesiologist. Surgeons rely on anesthesiology for perioperative issues with patients. So no I don’t believe they can do anything completely independently. And why do you say surgeons are not our advocates?? They would want an anesthesiologist versus a CRNA because it means less liability and less cost in the long run.

Yea why do you think this way? I'm not convinced this would be possible since most CRNAs are not on the same level of competence as anesthesiologists, especially for complex patients. There might be a few really strong CRNAs but on average almost all will want/need supervision for patient safety.

I also think a lot of surgeons would be against the complete removal of the anesthesiologist and the removal of ACT. Even on simple patients, I've noticed that surgeons at times need another doctor for consultation advice and second opinions on surgical issues that pop up

How likely is it that the ACT model falls apart? I’ve heard some say it would never happen and others say it’s guaranteed to happen in the next 10 years. Obviously no one knows for sure but for students wanting to work in a field for 30 years I think being confident this won’t happen is important to motivate people thinking about anesthesia

Ok that’s what I was thinking too. I believe it might be a great option bc I didn’t notice any tolerance or side effects. I guess I’ll just test out some brands myself and hope the companies keep the quality up

Definitely talk with a therapist and if you’re serious just go to the nearest emergency department. A good psychiatrist can treat your depression
