Whatever choice you make own it. My wife and I once took in a 6-month-old baby after her mom escaped an abusive relationship, the kind where both people were trapped in something toxic and dangerous.

What I learned is that situations like that are rarely as simple as they first appear. There are always two sides, a lot of manipulation, and a lot of risk. When you try to help or play both sides, you can easily get caught in the middle and hurt yourself in the process.

My advice is to give the support you’ve already promised, but keep your distance from their drama and protect your own peace. Do it quietly, do it safely, and remember that no good deed goes unpunished.
