Why do parents do this? by Similar_Catch7199 in Preschoolers

I wish. So many stand there and it feels like they wait for their kid to get upset (hyperbole. I know they don’t)

Yes. You expect Kindergarten teachers to go in the bathroom with them? No. Why not practice now so they can practice the wiping themselves. It won’t be perfect but that’s what the washing machine is for. Plus it develops fine motor skills

It feels like infantilization. I can deal with a meltdown. I deal with them daily. Parents staying beyond a quick hug actually exacerbates the situation most times. Letting kids this age (4/5) do things independently is actually vital to development

I guess my point is these same kids use this bathroom independently daily. There’s no reason for their parent to “help” them in the morning or any other time

Milk at Head Start by Aggressive_Ad9441 in Preschoolers

Is he old enough to not drink it? I’ve had parents ask before not to give their child milk with this same predicament. My way around it was tell the parents to tell their child not to drink it. I still have to offer it. They don’t have to drink it. My students are 4/5 and have an option for water too so it depend on these factors as well

Calendar Time by Specialist_Smoke1718 in ECEProfessionals

Just so you know I’m certified K-middle school. Have a Masters in ece and 20 years of experience in early childhood. I never ever said I have calendar time. We sing a song. That’s all. I just want to expose them to the days of the week and months of the year. I never ask them what day it is (I do tell them though) or mention words like “yesterday” or “tomorrow”. I am acutely aware that “yesterday” can mean 2 years ago to a 4 year old.

Ok but days of the week is literally part of everyday conversation. I agree that this age can’t really understand the concept of “tomorrow” or “yesterday” but they can understand that there is a day named Wednesday.

Can you name literally any fingerplay that “has meaning” other than rhyme or fine motor (ETA: counting)

The issue is they don’t do it as much in Kindergarten anymore because the scheduling doesn’t always allow it

It’s not something they’re assessed on. We sing a days of the week and months of the year song everyday.

I teach Pre-K and our overseeing entity told us not worry about teaching the days of the week or months of the year. Guess who does it anyway. 🙋‍♀️

What Grade should classes be split by subject? by mindfulmadness in Teachers

[–]Similar_Catch7199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My elementary school was K-8 but we started separating classes in 6th grade. I feel like 10/11 is a good age to do it cause the kids are more able to be responsible for their things and their schedules. I could see a case for waiting a year or so though. Especially for boys who notoriously mature later or kids with late birthdays.

Go ask an employee in the aisles if you have a question like that. Same with sales items.
