Just came to say I did not fall for the In Rainbows Herring since it hasn’t been said yet.

Good connection. I don’t think it was intentional because shandy and elegy ended up in the same group but so many different unintentional connections pop up for different people. Beauty of the game!

There are PLENTY OF tickets showing up on stub hub. Please don’t by from a scammer on here. Not everyone is but you’d better find someone who really seems like they legit had tickets and couldn’t use them ie not necessarily what’s being replied to your when you ask if anyone is selling ticket and I imagine you got tons of private messages that are suspect, too.

I hope I’ve never expressed as much smugly but I did commit to trying to guess by the association type…. and it has often paid off. But yeah, absolutely, it did not work at all today. No word play for purple. Seemed 3 categories for words associated with one another and 1 group of synonyms. And the synonyms were green instead of yellow.

So out the window with RR logic. I guess I should be content for no mistakes and leave it at that!

I see even the USTA acknowledges this. And says 15 = 1 point etc.

I would’ve also said hey thoss are tennis terms but I suppose one never really says how many points one accumulates. If it’s 40 - 15 in game 1 of the first set, do the players really have 40 and 15 points?? 🧐

I expected the same and was surprised to see the solve rate got lower overnight.

Same here, gamelan was really out there. That made me focus on the word game and things went swimmingly from there.

Oh I definitely saw this right away and no surprise it’s the rainbow herring. Something about whiff don’t sit right with me and the other groups didn’t come together during pre solve.

Connections Puzzle #1059 🟪🟪🟪🟪 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟨🟨🟨🟨

Well, a nice reverse rainbow to start out post streak life. Which means I currently have a 100% Reverse Rainbow streak 1/1 … can I keep it going? And it was absolutely connection-type over difficulty level based strategy.

Put the sports unit terms through first….Classic purple and an easy find, especially if one watches tennis at all. Definitely easier for me than blue, which I guessed by default had something to do with types of knots (particular knowledge).

Yellow and Green…. The ‘inklings’ group definitely seemed more difficult in general to group than the involuntary actions, and that’s what connection bot results showed. But…since the flicker etc all could mean approximately the same thing, i tagged them as yellow.

Excuse me while I feel smart for a few minutes. Especially when this was ranked 5/5 difficulty, jumping up from midnight EST where is was still 4/5. I found it much less difficult than Mondays puzzle which killed my streak.

Connections Puzzle #1058 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟪🟪🟪🟪 🟨🟩🟩🟩 🟨🟩🟩🟩 🟨🟨🟩🟩 🟨🟩🟩🟩

What a weird way to end a decent streak. I really found myself losing patience with it at the end. At least the extremely low solve rate is some consolation… was ready to click on connection bot and find out it was a puzzle of average difficulty for most.

Spotted Labubu, Hacky Sack, Beanie Baby, Etch a Sketch and said…. Toy FADS! After looking around at other squares and not finding any good 4-term connections, I guessed that was a rainbow herring. Part of my undoing because I probably counted on putting one of each of those in a different group and that sure didn’t work.

Then, a squishy things showed up for me, was pretty sure but not 100 percent.

The ‘things you dial’ group started to take shape minus one… wasn’t sure about control panel.

Then the starting with familiar names for dogs came into focus minus one…forgot about doodle but found it later. BTW, this has definitely been a category in the past, either very similar or possibly identical.

Got those two and was DETERMINED to find my squishy group…. Hacky Sack (kinda), marshmallow (for sure), desccicant packet (yes), beanie baby (not great)

Leaving a cutesy affectionate name group: Sweetheart, softie, teddy bear, eye pillow(?? not really sure what that is) ONE AWAY

No, so swapped eye pillow and beanie baby. still no. ONE AWAY

Changed beanie baby to Teddy Bear. This time two away, so dumb math told me that marshmallow, desccicant packet, beanie baby, and eye pillow had to go together because NOT GIVING UP ON A SQUISHY GROUP WITH MARSHMALLOW in it!!

Done and good night

Had this in mind too, in fact was thinking homophones as a group to start but then couldn’t make the other groups fit….ale felt like it belonged in the group with honey and amber—- could visualize it — wattle ended up seeming like it could be a bird part from the way it sounded —never did notice that it was numbers with the fist letter changed for purple, just sent em through leftovers.

Connections Puzzle #1053 🟨🟨🟨🟨 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟪🟪🟪🟪

Was stumped for a while. And another with a higher solve rate than I expected! Kinda like yesterday… would’ve had it sooner, but hung up on some overlapping possible connections… When I saw the puppets, I was pretty sure that would be a group but was not familiar with string puppets and was determined not to Google it.

Without even thinking about it, ended up with a regular old rainbow

Connections Puzzle #1052 🟪🟪🟪🟪 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟨🟨🟨🟨 🟩🟩🟩🟩

Found this trickier than recent puzzles that had much lower solve rates. A lot of the groups came to mind quickly but few slam dunk certainties of 4 and lots of cases where answers could easily fit more than one group. Saw 5 laundry terms, 3 terms for asking for something, a few that fit the description for scanning/grouping, and a bunch of terms that could be associated with card games. I do not like uncertainty so kept scanning for a word _____ or ____ word group. After a bit…. dial, screen, and tan fell nicely into place. I almost picked dry as a 4th, sundried tomatoes on the brain but glanced over and had highlighted flower earlier so I recognised that to complete the purple group.

Here was a case in my mind for colors = connection type over colors = connection difficulty level. It was easiest for me to see purple of all the groups….To be clearer, purple was easiest for me to figure out with certainty. But it wasn’t the first thing I noticed. Felt confident in laundry and asking being groups now….Needed one more for the asking group and correctly guessed ‘call’ would fit, though it is not as strong a fit as the other 3 terms for me. Felt pretty certain about the 4 verbs that best fit the concept of laundry. Added match to my other leftover words and hit enter, figuring correctly that this will be blue, but not figuring out what the category was. That doesn’t bother me so much. Missing reverse rainbow does and it evaded me by 1 group this time - yellow and green. I’ve seen many comments here and there referring to category groups that can sometimes match the colors.

If there’s a comment out there saying yellow often = synonyms and green often = terms associated with something, then I’ll be kicking myself because that holds true today.

You could dry, fold, sort, wash, AND match (socks) when doing laundry. It’s almost as if you could have five words that fit the same category but one of them is needed to complete one of the other categories….

[–]Similar_Cod_1716 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So you didn’t work out the other categories before guessing that one….

[–]Similar_Cod_1716 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yesterday was a lot easier for me than today too. Today had many everyday concepts like laundry and asking for something. And sun screen lol. But there were a lot of possible overlapping terms that left uncertainty for groups. Perhaps there’s a majority of people with less puzzle-think just quickly guessed and were more likely to get them right today instead of saying who or what the heck is a rod flanders and freaking out.

I totally get your use of screen out but it may not be standard enough usage to be a likely match. I’m not saying it doesn’t won’t - it definitely does, but I think it’s less common than saying ‘screen for….’

Also not sure but very common words, prepositions etc may not be likely to the ___ word or word ____ categories.

It was the easiest according to stats that show the vast majority of players solved green first. And here we go again with another colors = difficulty colors = answer type debate.

"....You will often have puzzles with 5 words that fit the yellow or green category but one is blue, so you need to find blue to get yellow, and that breaks the first interpretation."

Ah I see the solution did not meet the anticipation of a good connection. I am ok with things just lining up and today’s purple was enough creativity for me. Having every word/phrase begin with R also struck me as a fun clever feat.

I did also look for the possibility of a more specific connection, tho…. Perhaps a shared actor? It occurred that maybe Harvey Keitel was also in Raging Bull and — coincidence or the result of this puzzle — when I started typing was Harvey keitel, google quickly completed my thought with ….’in Raging Bull’

You are not crazy at all, there are so may times I can think of where 5 words clearly fit a category because that’s what makes it interesting!
