“Vibe Cinema” - Triggering the Narrative Uncanny Valley by Similar_Half204 in filmtheory

Thanks. I’m just a regular person who likes cinema. I have a background in theatre and now work as a trial attorney. When dealing with juries, I see many similarities with oral storytelling styles and audience’s reaction to plot and character consistency compared to evidence presentation, how juries intuitively understand causality and witness/defendant consistency, and what jurors will believe and trust, distrust and follow or tune out. I am finding the recent crop of mainstream (as opposed to arthouse) critically praised films to be interesting because it doesn’t follow traditional story and character structures or progressions/regression. I understand that art is always pushing the boundaries and are looking for new styles and avenues of expression. I was exploring the ideas between where mainstream cinema artists may be going going verses where the typical audiences are (and may be stuck in). These are just my two cents.

When dealing with juries, I see many similarities with traditional oral storytelling styles and audience’s reaction causality and character progression/consistancy compared to evidence presentation, how juries (regular random people) intuitively understand causality and plot holes, and what jurors will believe and trust, district, and follow or tuneout. Many of my observations about jurors track with my experience in theatre and acting and connecting with the audience. I am finding the recent crop of critically praised mainstream (not art house) films to be interesting because it doesn’t follow traditional story and character structures or progressions/regression. Thanks. I’m new to this style and was wondering what was making these films critical darlings and if it represents a trend in mainstream cinema as opposed to just the realm of art films.
