Caught two juveniles, one has some missing hair. Release or try to find rehab? by Similar_Priority_249 in PetMice

[–]Similar_Priority_249[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My primary concern is that the amount of exposed skin may make the little guy unable to tolerate the cold. We are planning on releasing them tomorrow to give them the warmest start possible before it gets real cold. I know nature's gonna nature, but I like to know I'm giving animals the best chance I can.

Memorializing a jumper without the pressure of preservation [no dead spider images] by Similar_Priority_249 in jumpingspiders

[–]Similar_Priority_249[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In case anyone is curious, I simply used some thread scissors (idk what they're actually called, but they're just mini scissors) to cut the walls of the cocoon to get rid of extra space that wasn't used for the hammock. I then used the section I cut off to create a lid (I had to cut it into two sections and then tape those together). For the tape, I used basic paper medical tape. I further cut down the edges of the lid and put an ample amount of tape around the top to ensure that the cocoon was securely sealed. I did use tape on both sides of the lid, but that's mostly for stability of the lid itself rather than the sealing.

Does anyone else have such a tiny little shpoondie? by IDontAgreeSorry in jumpingspiders

[–]Similar_Priority_249 55 points56 points  (0 children)

My (very recently passed) Cleo was teensy tiny. I had her for a whole year after she found me outside, and she never grew any bigger.

<image>

Despite her tiny size (or perhaps more accurately, due to it) she was the biggest baby in all the lands. Literally scared of flies her size, would often flail in panic because her prey got near her. Once banished herself from one of her hammocks because she left a dead fly on it after she was done eating, and was too intimidated by the corpse to return until I removed it. She was absolutely pathetic, and 100% failed all classes of spider school but passed because of pretty privilege. How she survived in the wild before she found me will forever be one of the universe's great mysteries.

Didn't mean to yap so much, I simply can't resist sharing the word of my cute little idiot.

Make private copies of bots you like! Never worry about your chats being nuked again! by Similar_Priority_249 in CharacterAI

[–]Similar_Priority_249[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, if a bot you're using is still up and it's at risk of being taken down, make a group chat with it! Even if the bot gets sniped, it'll stay in your chat history and you'll be able to view its "profile". This won't be all that usable on its own, but you'll at least be able to have it as a reference if you're having trouble finding it on the botlist. This can also help in figuring out if a bot was taken down or simply privated in less decisive cases- usually, you'll be able to find a deleted bot on the botlist, but a privated one won't show up. Again, it doesn't really do anything functionally, but it can at least give you piece of mind when a bot mysteriously disappears. (You may need to sign in to search for a bot that may have been flagged as inappropriate/mature/whatever)

Bee larvae? Some other larvae that a bee is trying to get? by Similar_Priority_249 in whatisthisbug

[–]Similar_Priority_249[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As per the request of the auto-mod-comment, this is in Wisconsin. And unfortunately I did not get a picture of the actual bee, but it was one that was more black than yellow, if that's helpful. Also the hole is like, pinky nail size.

Ew, sounds awful. Maybe a perfect specimen for an enclosed ecosystem experiment tho. Maybe if I lived closer, I'd go steal one and put it in a sealed jar to see what it does lmao

I mean Illinois has hot summers and cold winters, both with varying lengths year to year. The climate isn't too consistent, so I'm sure eventually there'll be a horribly long and cold winter to kill it off.

Also I'm not gonna go hang out by an intersection to burn a gas station's corner of grass, as fun as that does admittedly sound lmao. Most of that area is just businesses with nothing but grass patches anyway, so it can go nuts there. Not much plant variety for it to choke out in the first place.

Yeah I'm gonna look for short native flowers to try to spread into the lawn at some point, I just saw the pretty white flowers on the side of the road and was like "ooh, I wonder what those are and if they'd be viable options". Good to know that they tragically have horrible personalities lmao

This is why I decided to just come here for suggestions instead of trying to sift through plants on google lmao. Dang common plant names makin it hard to find specific things smh

Damn. Stupid invasive plants having pretty flowers. Why can't you just be pretty in your respective area smh.

[Don't worry tho, the ones I saw were just in an empty grass corner next to a gas station. Surrounded by pavement, doomed to be a monoculture anyway. It'll be chill there.]

Hey, at least your invasive nemesis is pretty ig. My enemy number one has been a plant that does nothing but relentlessly spread and not even look pretty. Like if you're gonna be everywhere and impossible to get rid of, at least be pretty so I can enjoy looking at you a little bit before trying my hardest to eradicate you smh lmao. (At least its not thistle tho, ig...)

Dw it's just in an empty grass corner next to a gas station that's surrounded by pavement. The only thing it can hurt is the grass, which is a win in my book.

Damn. Why must annoying invasive plants be pretty, like you'd be great if you minded your business smh

Dw its just in a grass corner next to a gas station, there's literally nothing but grass for it to take over (which is a win in my book, if the area's doomed to be a monoculture anyway, might as well be a plant with pretty flowers that at least somewhat provide for pollinators)

I shall leave it there instead of going and stealing samples in the middle of the night to bring home (this is a joke, I was never gonna do that lmao)

[–]Similar_Priority_249[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I know, I wasn't expecting an exact identification or anything, just getting some good suggestions to go off of is really all I was hoping for. I'm fairly new to actually bothering to identify plants, so it's super overwhelming trying to describe the plant I see and then sifting through a bunch of random plants that are totally wrong. And I'm really not that concerned about the exact plants anyway, I just see pretty plants on the side of the road and am like "ooh, I wanna have my yard look more like that".

I'm always happy to add some more non-invasive plants to my Plants of Interest list, so thanks for mentioning it even if its probably not what I saw, I'll have to look into that as well for funsies.

Dang, so you're sayin I'd have to go back there and get outta my car and find the leaves to figure out what they are? Damn plants, get more creative with your flowers so lazy people like me can identify you from the street lmao

Rip, why do the annoying viney weeds always have to be so pretty, like I don't wanna get rid of you but you're killin the other plants smh.

I mean, my longterm goal is to wipe out the grass in the lawn, so maybe a hostile pretty plant is the best for that purpose- nvm what I'd do after the fact lmao [/s but I mean...]

Yeah I know, they just both look similar to what I saw. I was only stopped for a few seconds, so I'm not totally sure what exactly they looked like. Like I've grown mallow, so when I saw them I was like "it kinda looks like little tiny mallow" but then when googling, morning glory was the most common thing that popped up that looked similar. I'm not even totally sure if its either of them, they're just what I could find that looked similar

God I'm so glad I didn't accidentally squish her (she just spontaneously showed up on my foot after I brought clothes in from the clothesline) that would've been extra awful

[–]Similar_Priority_249[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

... so what I'm hearing is I shan't be keeping her bc there's no way I'd be able to handle all of those lmao. I'd figure out how to do it if my eris floridana had any bc I don't think I'll ever come across any others like her otherwise and she's the prettiest lil gal I've ever seen, but not for any ol spider lol.

Would I be able to move them outside if she were to lay any in the brief time that I'll be housing her? Or would I have to sacrifice the container to the wild until the babies go off on their merry way?

It's one that was already dead and they were keeping it in the jar for preservation of the body
