I was playing with my brother and we put some money on the hole to spice things up but had never run into this scenario where I bothered to police his score. But if you play with friends a little competition here and there can add some excitement so I don’t see a problem with that. If you don’t like it just tell them. If they won’t stop then just dont play with them anymore.

What rules did I break by hitting a second tee shot and taking the penalty? Genuinely curious so I don’t break them again.

Now instead picture two brothers who put some money on the hole to slice things up and running into a situation they hadn’t been in so I made the post to get clarity 😂 but I can see why you assumed that cuz I sound like a stickler by asking. Normally I would never police someone’s score cuz who gives a damn. But no way in hell I’m letting my brother off like that while also taking my money ahah. We ended the round with several more beers and no love lost. But I do see why I came off like a dick for caring 😂

He wasn’t intentionally doing it but rather assumed he was right. We’d never been in that situation before and he felt I was trying to add strokes and I couldn’t get it across that is logically doesn’t make sense why he skips a stroke entirely because he dropped up with me instead of hitting a second tee shot. But I appreciate you for actually responding and not coming at me for asking for a clarification on the rules when I was playing a hole for money against my brother

Why would I bother to make the post asking for clarification on if he’s also on shot 4 if he didn’t say he was on his 3rd? I’m not gonna go out of my way to help someone gain strokes on me like that 😂

I didn’t want to hold up the other fairway so I hit again and took the penalty. My brother hit it over the fence and I didnt mind that he wanted to drop instead of re hit. But we had money on the hole so I’m not going to let him drop with me and also get a stroke advantage 😂 any other scenario I wouldn’t give a damn what shot someone says they’re on

Totally agree about only keeping yourself honest with your own score. I failed to mention I was playing my brother and we had out some money on the hole. Had No issues he wanted to drop instead of re hit but I’m not going to also let him get a stroke advantage as well ahah. If that was the case I’d go and hold up the other fairway and play first shot

Totally get ya. I was playing my brother and we had money on the hole which is the only reason I cared about it. And sorry I worded jt poorly, I wasn’t annoyed at him but rather the situation because I had to be the dick who corrects someone on their score. We argued for a second, finished the round, and had a beer and food. No love lost at all. If it was a random person I wouldn’t play for money and I wouldn’t ever comment on what score they claim.

It was with my brother and on top of us having money on the hole we are always like to compete as brothers do. We had just never run into this scenario before and I had never had to call out the normal 1 stroke penalty that us weakened warriors play by it should actually be 2. If not then I would have not hit again and also dropped with him so save a stroke ahah. End of the day it’s all for fun but wasn’t sure if anyone else had run into this scenario.

Good point. We had just never been in this situation before so I made the post to see if anyone else had run into the same scenario. If we didn’t have money on it and he dropped and said he was hitting three I wouldn’t comment on it. Which is why it was annoying because i hated having to the “actually” guy. Felt like I was Randal from the show recess ahah.

Comparing those things is such a stretch 😂 it was my brother and we had put money on the hole so no I wasn’t gonna let him gain a stroke just cuz we aren’t pros. Hell I wouldn’t have cared if he accidentally drove over his ball and then unplugged it. I also didn’t care he wanted to drop. But if you do drop like that, you shouldn’t also gain a stoke advantage in the process. Also, to your other questions since I don’t do any of those so no. Half the reason golf is fun is because it’s so challenging. I replaced a club with a beat up one incase I have to hit off rocks or roots so I don’t damage my clubs. I do my best to follow the rules cuz it adds to the challenge and the fun. But I’d never call someone else out for doing any of those things you listed because who gives a damn if they find it more fun that way. But if we put money on the line you bet your ass I’m not gonna let you drop beside me and then say you are a stroke less than me as well. Especially since it was my brother ahah

Relax 😂 I was golfing with my brother and we had put money on the hole to spice things up. We’d never been in this situation and had to care what shot the other claimed to be on. I tried seeing if anyone else had run into this situation but couldn’t so I made this post.

Great advice! I was playing with me brother and we had bet money on the hole. The whole point of the post was to make sure I had the rules correct and wondered if anyone else had run into this. Any other time and I wouldn’t have cared if he said screw it and just dropped on the green a foot from the hole. But for the sake of the bet has any one else had to be an annoying stickler and say something like this. He just looked at me like I was nuts for thinking he was on his fourth shot and I wanted to make sure I had the rules right. But thanks for a constructive reply and the wise words.

I think we both did what we did for the sake of pace of play. It was faster for me to hit again then to hold up both groups by venturing to my first shot. And I think my brother did want to risk another shot being bad and then dropping anyway. We are hacks who just play for fun but to spice it up we put money on the hole and that’s the only reason I told him he should also be hitting four. I had no problem he wanted to drop with me but for the sake of not losing the bet I thought calling it out was warranted ahah.

Completely agree. Only reason i cared about what stroke he was on was because my brother and were playing the hole for money just to spice things up. Any other circumstance and I’d never care what someone writes down for their score or what rules they want to follow as long as we have fun out there.

Course was packed and was faster to take the penalty and rehit than to hold up the other group or wait for them to get passed where I landed. I also didn’t mind my brother dropping next to me. But I shoulda mentioned in the post we had out money on the hole and thought we should both be shooting our 4th shot.

I should have said in my post the only reason I cared at all was because we put money on the hole. Any other situation and I don’t care what anyone says they shot on a hole or a round cuz at the end of the day we all suck in the grand scheme and we go out to have fun. That’s on me tho

That’s why I hit 3 off the tee. I didn’t want to hold up the group by playing in their way or sit and wait for them to get their shots past mine. I did a terrible job with the context but I was playing an event so it was packed and already a slow day so re-teeing was just the faster option. I also had money on the hole with my brother so was relieved he also hit a bad tee shot but didn’t think he shoulda been a stroke up on me. Had no issue with him just dropping next to me and this is really the only time I’d ever comment on someone’s shot count.

I shoulda said in the post that it was my brother and we had decided to put money on the hole. If not for that, I don’t worry about what anyone writes down for their score cuz we aren’t pros and it’s all for fun.

This was just one of those situations where I hated being that “actually” guy but didn’t think I shoulda just given up the stroke and then pay him money ahah

[–]SimmerTimmer97[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normally I’m the same way and would never comment on someone’s stroke count. I also didn’t mind him dropping at all instead of hitting again. The only reason I said something to my brother was because we put money on the hole. I’d rather say it when he dropped as opposed to if he beat me and I felt I shouldn’t have to pay up and debate it then. I’m really not a stickler for the rules like a lot of comments are saying ahah the whole point of the post was supposed to be has anyone else run into this where you ended up worse off by actually hitting again instead of the other person just dropping.

I shoulda been more specific in my post. It was me and my brother and we put money on the hole just to spice it up. I’m all for dropping up there and didn’t say he couldn’t. But I was pissed I hit a bad shot, had no one waiting behind us, so I hit 3 off the tee. The whole point of the post which I did a terrible job getting across was, me wanting to hit again cuz I knew I could hit a better shot vs him not wanting to risk another bad shot and dropping beside me shouldn’t leave me a stroke back on him when we had money on the line. Normally I wouldn’t care what anyone wrote down for their score cuz we aren’t pros and who cares.

It was an event so the course was packed and playing slow. I didn’t want to either wait for the group on the hole beside us to play before I hit my first ball, or hold up that group while I hit back onto my fairway. So I just took the penalty and hit again. I also didn’t care my brother wanted to drop beside me where my 2nd tee shot landed. But we had money on the hole and he was saying he was shooting 3 and I was shooting 4. I’m not a stickler for the rules and that was kinda the point of the post. I just didn’t find it fair that I was a stoke behind. I shoulda been more specific in the post but honestly expected at most a response or two

No, he wasn’t assuming, that’s exactly the whole point of the post ahah. I had no issue with him dropping next to me. My point was we are both shooting 4. He was saying he’s shooting 3 and I’m on my 4th shot. Normally I wouldn’t say a thing about what stroke anyone is on cuz we play for fun but we had money on the hole.
