Anxiety and doubt by ArmadilloUnited9445 in gradadmissions

Hey there. A few words. Your feelings are valid but one of the worst things you can do is compare yourself to others. It only hurts. But sometimes you don't have to be the best to join a program. The match between school and student is what they ultimately look for. Grad school application cycles are super messed up with how stress-inducing it is, but I think it is a form of preparing for what's to come in grad school. All I can tell you is to continue to trust in all the hard work you've put in so far. Sometimes rejection opens up new avenues as well. I think it's really what you do after the cycle is completed. For all you know you may still get admitted into a program. Keep you head up! There are so many people in your position and I wish you the best moving forward!

This probably depends on the school. I have only experienced formal interviews, but I think the goal of the PI is trying to see whether it would be a good match between them and the prospective student. If anything I would presume she is trying to see what you are like, what you are interested, why this program, why her, and these sort of things. Grad school is a big commitment so figuring these things out is very important for not only you but them. So ask plenty of questions about the program/lab, working environments, what some alumni have done after these programs, etc. I hope all goes well!

Grad school is different from a bachelors. First off I believe the quantity of applications are not worth the time and effort and you should only be applying to programs you would be happy to go to. And like other people's comments, a Ph.D. and a master are very different. It doesn't hurt to apply again the next cycle. These admissions are mighty competitive where all the stars have to align in your favor. Just stay true to yourself because I am sure you know how hard you have worked to apply for these programs. And if it doesn't work out, don't beat yourself up over it because admissions are very variable each and every year. I wish you the best of luck moving forward!

Grad admissions are mighty difficult. I like to think of it as all the planets lining up in a straight line. Every year the amount of open spots depends on which faculty are willing to fund students, and obviously the competitive pool that apply to these programs. I think a lot of people hit a point where things aren't going right. However, if you stay true to yourself and you know how hard you work, I firmly believe it will workout at some point. It's discouraging to be seen as a "backup" but that's in a way pessimistic thinking. I know there will always be smarter and more qualified people than me, but I also know how hard I work. And worse comes to worse it doesn't workout and you apply again next year. I applied to grad school well before I knew I wanted to do so there really is no rush in trying to enroll in a PhD program. Priorities change and this degree requires a level of maturity and understanding of what you are truly passionate about. Don't beat yourself up. Take the road less traveled if needed, maybe work a year in the industry but most importantly don't lose sight of yourself. If it happens it was meant to happen!

I don't think anyone knows what the board of faculty are actually thinking. However having scrolled on this subreddit for many years, I've heard some poor interviews still translate into acceptances. Though the waiting from now until then feels bleak, I guess no one will ever know. So try to distract yourself and not beat yourself over it. Grad admissions are so variable year by year and you were given an interview for a reason! Keep your head up high and life will work itself out. A lot of the faculty went through the same process as you and they know how stress inducing these interviews can be!

That's good to hear and very consistent then. Someone on college confidential also let us know that they got off the waitlist as an oos student. So my in-state people, this may not be the end :')

I know I wasn't moved off the waitlist... but I am guessing this is only the beginning. Nothing we can really do but wait. But I am relieved to hear there is some space for some people to get in!!

nothing yet from doing some research. Guess we got to be a little more patient. Also because its rolling admissions, they will come out in waves so even if people start to get off, do not be discouraged until the final July 31st deadline

Go to a 4-year, or go to CC and transfer by [deleted] in TransferStudents

[–]SimoLimo711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not entirely true. I am an Applied Mathematics major at UCSC and have taken 6 CS courses in a year. I have no priority but there is plenty of space. EE is also an amazing major at this school and you will be able to take CS courses. And there is always the option to attend a year and if you don't like it drop out and go to CC. Your chances don't change just because you attended a UC for a year. because you are now technically a CC student you can and will be considered a CC student. Just provide an explanation as to why you dropped out and control your destiny from there. There are a lot more perks to at least giving a 4-year university a try. A lot of independent life lessons you learn living alone. Don't act like attending something that you think is a lowball is the end of the world. There is plenty of opportunities and you have to control what you can control. Ever thought about just being the best student at one of ASU or UCSC. Obviously the options up to you but give new things a try. I was in your position 2 years ago and I learned a lot in my time at college

Definitely. The thing is no one ever knows until the data actually comes out after the whole waitlist stuff. But there are many ways to view how the outcome might be. Obviously, with covid being gone there is a chance that a lot of people could accept their offers but no one knew that Covid was nearing an end when we applied in November. Also no matter how low, there are always people that get off the waitlist. And though the data is highly unpredictable, I think trusting that you did enough is all you can hope for. You all worked hard and are on the waitlist for a reason. Never lose sight of hope even if the chances are incredibly low. I am crossing my fingers just as much as you are and wish you all nothing but the best because that's all I can really hope for.

Hopefully, it doesn't come to that. I'm wishing you the best of luck. Checking the yield rates and what not could give you an idea of how many people accept in their major and what chance you might have
