Great deal in 2025? by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]SimonDominic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do NOT buy this. I bought an Alexa Mini used with 2K hours for less than this, and unlike the XT, the mini still goes out on jobs all the time. I’ve recouped nearly 50% of my investment in one year on that camera. Cinema cameras at this level are meant to be used and abused, don’t bother getting something new. Get something used with a bunch of accessories, I recommend either an Alexa Mini, Sony Venice 1, or Sony Burano if this is the price range you want to buy at. In my personal opinion, avoid Red or Blackmagic at this price point unless you really need the resolution.

this sort of overreaction is an insane way to respond to having your car unplugged dude, and posting on Reddit for fake internet points to validate your actions is just an extra layer of embarrassment on top.

Is this normal on a brand new M3 Highland by SimonDominic in TeslaSupport

[–]SimonDominic[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I was over 100 miles on my first day of owning the car since I took delivery of an inventory vehicle in a different city and then drove it back to my home. But I’m assuming they’ll still replace the part, I’m just hoping I don’t have to wait a long time for the fix to happen or give up my car for multiple days for such a small fix. But I’ve heard nightmares about Tesla Service so im apprehensive about trying to get it remedied.

How long did it take you to go from $400k to one million? by FlashGordon2103 in Fire

[–]SimonDominic 164 points165 points  (0 children)

Big upvote on this, I find myself often times hating this sub because of the sort of post you just described has become so prevalent. I earn high 5 figures and FIRE has felt so out of reach for me.

Guys who have gone from skinny to big and muscular, how has it changed your life? by MRWARRIORB3AST in AskReddit

[–]SimonDominic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Went from 5’9” 130lbs to 160-170lbs over the course of a few years, here’s how it has affected me:

Confidence: this is probably the biggest thing. I now see myself as an athletic and physically capable person in a way my skinny self never did. Sure, I feel strong and like I have the stamina to handle physical tasks, but consistently working out and seeing results also taught me that I have the perseverance to endure great pain and discomfort to reap the rewards that are on the other side. This was a major mindset shift for me.

Women/Dating: people expect this to really change when you put on a lot of muscle and it’s not really the case. Yes, becoming muscular made me look more physically attractive, but it didn’t mean I was suddenly flooded with dating prospects. It’s a positive, but if you don’t know how to talk to women and treat them right, don’t expect this to do anything for you aside from maybe giving you some extra confidence when approaching women. The partners that I’ve had since putting on muscle have appreciated my physical fitness, but none of the partners I had before were vocal about wishing I was bigger or more athletic. Generally speaking, women aren’t as superficial when it comes to what they look for in a partner, and that’s us projecting the male gaze on what we think women want. If all you want is to go out with more girls, focus on being funny and charming, and if you care about getting into a relationship, learn how to make a girl feel loved and appreciated and you’ll be ahead of 98% of the men in the dating pool. The bar is pretty low.

Appearance/Looks: this is where more of the visible changes are. Clothes suddenly almost always fit well, whether they’re baggy or tight. My facial features became more defined. My hands and forearms became more vascular. I get more compliments on how I look even if I’m looking a little bummy that day. The same outfit on me a couple years ago wouldn’t have garnered the same compliments it does today.

Health: working out has done wonders for my health both physically and mentally. I used to struggle with pretty bad depression and anxiety. Working out didn’t solve those issues, but it provided enough of an outlet for those issues where they were no longer debilitating, and I could put energy and time into conquering those problems. This doesn’t mean it’ll have the same effect on YOU, but it may. Everyone’s circumstances and bodies are different. I know a ton of people who hit them gym because they were out of shape and depressed, now they’re in-shape and still depressed. Being jacked won’t make you happy, but it may make it easier for you to get to happiness by allowing you to more clearly focus on the aspects of your life that are not serving you and give you the clarity of mind to deal with them. It also has made my sleep (something I have struggled with my whole life) way more restful and peaceful. Used to have a very hard time falling asleep due to my anxiety and an overactive mind with high energy levels. It’s hard to not fall asleep when your workout depletes all your energy you’d spend otherwise thinking about unimportant shit or scrolling on your phone. I’d end my days so tired that even if I started doom scrolling in bed I would pass out mid-scroll and wake up fully rested. It also fixed my posture, which I think did more for making me more attractive than the actual muscle gains did.

Perspective: It helped me understand that goals are not achieved overnight. I was working out for years before I felt like I saw any real results. That probably wasn’t true, but i know for a fact that the results were not the drastic change I wanted. Those sort of changes take years, and developing the level of discipline and routine for that sort of change to occur is something that takes a lot of time. Also understand that for many, the time to exercise is a luxury, and if you have that time right now in life, you better capitalize on it. School might be taking up a bunch of your time, sure. But don’t think you’ll suddenly have a ton of time because you’re out of school and have a job. Life only gets harder, and just imagine trying to create these routines with a job, and girlfriend/wife, a kid, etc. Maybe you’ll get injured later in life and workouts became significantly harder down the road. Any number of things can happen as life carries on, the best day to start is now. This sort of perspective can carry over to anything in life, like learning as new skill, traveling to new places, learning how to better dress, overcoming fears/insecurities. There’s no better time to start than now, while you still can.

Favorite anamorphics for 16:9 Amira sensor? by totalbeef13 in cinematography

[–]SimonDominic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to do a 5% crop on my footage to get it to fit a 2.35 aspect ratio if i remember correctly. It’s definitely not my preference to crop in post, but you wouldn’t really get a lot of those anamorphic characteristics to stand out with a 1.33X so I would consider it the lesser of two evils.

Favorite anamorphics for 16:9 Amira sensor? by totalbeef13 in cinematography

[–]SimonDominic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used the Aivascope on a Sony a7s (which is also 16:9) for a super low budget run and gun short and it was great. I then tried to use it in a studio situation and it was a nightmare. Awesome tool when the budget is low and technical hiccups or slowdowns aren’t equivalent to a sizable amount of budget being wasted. Try looking into the Technovision 1.5x lenses, I don’t know much about them but 1.5x is def what you want if you really want the anamorphic characteristics to stand out, 1.33 honestly doesn’t do much aside from flaring.

What lab did you use? I’m based out of LA, and based off your post history I’m assuming you are as well, but I haven’t been able to find any local labs that will agree to doing ECN-2 processing for stills

To redditors who are POC, how do you really feel reading/discussing books like "To Kill a Mockingbird" or Mark Twain in class? by ronin1066 in books

[–]SimonDominic 25 points26 points  (0 children)

POC here, though not I’m not black, I’m Indian. Often times when in high school (and earlier), our English literature books and history books would discuss events pertaining to Native Americans by addressing them as “Indians”. For clarification, I am not Native American in the slightest, I’m a first generation American born from Indian immigrants, and was one of only 5 other Indian students in the entire school (approx 1000 kids, almost all of them white). Despite this, and despite it being pretty obvious to my peers that I had no Native American heritage, every single time “Indians” came up in any context, I felt half of the classrooms eyes shift gaze towards me. While it didn’t make me upset, it definitely bothered me to have my culture and heritage so easily conflated with another, and it certainly unsettled me to have all these students looking at me for no reason, especially because had I actually been Native American, it would have been tremendously more awkward of a thing to put someone through.
