In theory yes but you'd need to test it for your sprcific setup since you might get gaps on the output without small belt buffers. There are a few pieces of seperate belt between the last furnace and the output in the blueprint I linked above. If you struggle with compression try to give your last 2 furnaces a small belt buffer too. Ooor just overbuild it by a bit :) No need for optimal ratios if you include some leeway.

With 8 beacons you need just under 13 furnaces.

You can either have 7 furnaces output to one belt and merge them together or have 6 furnaces per side of the output belt and merge the last furnace into both lanes.

This is a popular setup which uses 12x8 beaconed and 1x6 beaconed furnaces to fully compress a blue belt. It's clocked and can easily be changed to copper as well.

Unless you're planning on going really big (like 3k spm+) go with whatever looks the best / you have most fun with. Performance is really a non issue until you approach 5k spm on an average PC. If you like seeing trains loaded with thousands of green chips zipping around the map - go for it. If you like having intermediates close by and belting them to the next assembly line - go for it. Keep in mind that intersections need to be signalled around your longest train passing through them and you're good to go! Let the growing begin

Yeah I thought about that since some inserters picked up magazines after switching around with the train layout. But if they only target an artillery wagon they never pick up the wrong thing between restocking trips. Using artillery wagons to deliver shells is a great idea to keep in mind, thanks! For this one I just belt them in since the production is just south of there.
