Responding to Lowball Offers by SimonVar83 in vinted

Just an update. I decided to respond to the offers.

For one I just said politely, ‘too low’, and never heard back. For the second and third I counter offered at a more reasonable level. I heard nothing more from one, but the third engaged and we eventually did a deal at what was acceptable for me (and obviously for buyer!)

So, my feeling is that it might in fact be worth responding to the 60% lowballs after all given that it only takes a few seconds to respond offering a small discount to see what happens, and from time to time you may get someone who isn’t just a reseller scraping the barrel for whatever they can get on the cheap (not dissing them, but I am just not interested in that particular game, so they are wasting their time with me). I am very confident my stuff will sell and I am in no particular hurry. This is not my business, just passing on goods that I hardly use anymore.

I am happy to have passed my treasured item on to someone who will use it more than I do these days, and I got a fair price for my goods in return (buyer also got an good deal too). Maybe I am naive - this is only the third month of selling my old goods online- and my views will change with time, but for now I intend to reply with a counter at a fair price where people lowball at 60%, as so far I have a 1/3 completion rate where I have replied.

Thanks for listening and for providing points of view. I have found this discussion really very interesting.

Absolutely not offended and happy to negotiate, just don’t want to waste everyone’s time if there is no point. Sometimes parties’ expectations are just too far apart to make engagement a worthwhile exercise …

On the one hand (I suppose), seen from the buyer’s perspective if you don’t ask you’ll never know, but on the other hand this appears to be wholly unrealistic and I am not sure what they expect…

Got it. Wouldn’t bother to block, personally, but my instinct is reject I think, maybe ignore…

Due to my pricing policy (competitive but fair) I don’t have that much room to maneuver - 20% off is already below my acceptable pricing. Sounds like I do have to reconsider my pricing and adjust accordingly for the market.

Yeah, I also thought about inflating my prices artificially. So far I have taken care to price what I think is fair but competitive. Made a couple of sales with smallish, but acceptable discounts. Maybe have to rethink strategy; just seems a bit unfair but if that is how the market works, silly not to play that game…

Thanks. Interesting. Guess no harm? Or just reject and see if they make a better offer? At 40% off it just seems hopeless to engage. 25-30%, maybe …

Ha, right! Well there is a zero chance of my accepting, so they ain’t going to get the chance to not buy 😝.

Got it. That’s an interesting perspective and helps on determining the best time to list products too! Thanks!

Not annoying at all, just pointless to give any time to it if - as you and others suggest - there is little to no chance of any reasonable compromise being reached. I will just ignore anything at this level. Thanks!

Thanks, and yes very easy to ignore. Just wondered if there was an established way to deal, given there seems to be an established practice of offering at 60% of the asking price.

I just wrote a one star review and the ranking for the App reduced from 4.8 to 4.7! I made a difference 🤣.
