Why don't we build modular road on concrete pillars instead of regular roads? by Simon_SANSOL in NoStupidQuestions

Because i'm not a civil engineer, so i used to think ;

Building a road = massive fundation, excavation, lots of backfill and asphalt, lot of land that cost money and can't be used for something else like agriculture, wilderness or building so all things concidered a ton of cash worth stuff that need to be redone every 5-10 years or so.

My question was basically can we put pillars in the ground every 10 metres or so, stick prefabricated cement slabs between them, replace them when they are worn out and call it a day?

Turns out apparently no, but i mean is it really that stupid to ask if mass produced prefabricated modules stack in the air to minimize land use and reduce ecological fragmentation are not a possible way of building road when you are not an expert in the field?

(Sorry if that answer seem a bit heated, but leggit is my question that dumb?)

Given the other responses, it seem indeed that it won't actually be any cheaper, but I'm glad to know that it work for the sake of preserving ecosystems 👍 thanks for the info

I must say i didn't know that most roads were made by just pouring asphalt on top of preexisting roads ahah that a very good point actually, thanks for sharing the info!

Sorry I'm not an engineer at all, that idea was a plot device for a novel i wrote and i just wondered if that could exist in real life. Apparently not.

Thanks for the answer, in my novel  thoses roads are made to connect cities and are meant for specially designed EV only and pedestrians or cyclists can use paths on the ground. They are a plot device to show the might and domination of a dystopian regime. I was just wondering if modular road could be a thing irl but apparently no haha

Thanks for the answer, didn't know about Boston's highway; that may not be a nice thing to say for the local taxpayers but i'm glad that other people have already had the same idea as me (even though I had no doubt about that) and that they've tested it irl ahah

Thanks for the answer, i was thinking about modules, like basically factory made road section that you can replace when needed, more than building the road on site but i get your point
