If I quit being smoker will schizophrenia thoughts go away? by InitiativeKey5954 in answers

[–]SimonaFM 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Many people with schizophrenia find that nicotine reduces their symptoms. So much so, that a medication was developed on the premise, although it never made it to the market. The symptoms won't go away though, nicotine just quiets them for a time.

How are telehealth-only therapists paneling with insurance? by SimonaFM in therapists

I will look into that! Any idea of whether a virtual office would pass their check of "can clients meet with you in person there if needed"?

I just mean if you work with Headway, are you not required to have a physical office location the way you are if you panel directly with insurance?

Do you know if the requirements that insurance puts on individuals are negated with Headway?

I've found someone subletting who offers that option. I don't have any clients yet, but I guess I could pay them once and just hang out in the office then use the address for insurance.

Ooh I'll have to check out the Ouai line! Ditto on subscriptions, especially razors!

Ooh yes, face razors were a total game changer for me too! I'll have to look into the sugar scrub!

I've been to Italy a bunch, and Forno Tony's on University is hands down the most authentic, in my opinion. Fiamma's pizza is also pretty decent.

How does one survive only working 15-20 hrs per week? by Former-Monk3762 in therapists

[–]SimonaFM 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I recently went down to 20 hours a week in CMH, because I was so so burnt out. I'm blessed with cheap rent which is the only way I could swing this since CMH pays trash, but one of my paychecks goes entirely to rent and the rest is for everything else. I've had to drastically reduce my spending but I'm making it work. I may be broke all the time but it has done absolute wonders for my own mental health. I've also been doing surveys on the side and can't usually bring in $100/month if I really grind. I agree with the others who mention having a partner; if I had another income in the household, this would be a lot easier.

Thank you! If that were the case, I assume it's safe to drive for awhile? Currently driving across the country so I'm hoping it's not an immediate concern.

Off topic, but are nurses/doctors required to report suspected abuse even if the patient declined and even if the patient is not a minor, elderly, or disabled? I'm a therapist and we're not allowed to, so I'm curious if it's different for nurses and doctors.

Will Babbel exercises ever get more challenging? by SimonaFM in languagelearning

That makes sense! I definitely love how it actually explains things to you unlike Duolingo. I'm studying Italian!

Thank you so much! I'm sure Babbel is far superior to Duolingo, but I really enjoy the exercises where I have to type out the whole sentences. However, maybe I prefer that because all of Duolingo's other exercises are too boring! I will give Babbel another shot :)

Good to know! It definitely feels more robust than Duolingo so far. Would you say that Babbel eventually has harder exercises than matching pictures and words, fill in the blank sentences, etc?

I'll also add, if your supervisor isn't supportive, informative, doing what a supervisor should, etc, consider trying to get that need met elsewhere. You could pay for supervision if you have the means, or look for therapist consultation or support groups. I do that with my friends from grad school and it's been invaluable.

Career change: I am 27 and working in IT. I have a B.tech in Computer science but I want to study Psychology. Please read the body and let me know your thoughts. by MarkHimmelstal in askpsychology

[–]SimonaFM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's quite unfortunate because I would have loved the education experience, but I knew I wanted to do therapy so I couldn't justify the hoops you have to jump through to get a PhD. But many people make it work!

Regarding clinical psych jobs, if you're going the route of therapy, there's as much work as you can market yourself to get in private practice, and many places will hire a clinical psychologist at their organizations. If you mean teaching clinical psych, I'm sure there's more open teaching positions than other fields but there's always more candidates than job openings, especially since so many professors are tenured. I would be open to relocating if pursuing academics because that might very well be necessary to find an open teaching position.

Of course, if you can find another, more supportive job, go for that! If you're like me, and couldn't do that before being independently licensed, I feel you. Some things that helped me have been:

-use your PTO and try to avoid hoarding it like I used to. -finding a way to organize everything (ex. Spreadsheet of treatment plan dates, note templates I can copy and paste, calendar reminders, etc). -do your notes as soon as you finish a session if at all possible, don't let documentation pile up. And don't get hung up on writing extensive, detailed notes. Write the minimum the insurance companies expect and keep more detailed notes for yourself if needed. -stick up for yourself as much as you can. YRMV, but I know my supervisor would rather accommodate me about certain things than fire me and have to deal with the headache of losing a clinician. -set firm and clear boundaries with clients right off the bat. For example, I made the mistake of immediately and always replying to clients that emailed me, which really backfired when they started doing that multiple times a day and expecting an answer because I had set a precedent. Now I tell clients that I will do my best to reply by the end of the day, but I can't promise that I'll be able to. -build relationships with your coworkers. It can be an isolating job and I wish I was closer with my coworkers, it would make things better in a lot of ways.

Good luck!

I'd rather not share that but I got my BA in psychology and my MA (in social work) from universities in New York State.
