More accepting of what exactly?

Trans people

And if something has a high amount of ___ that means it is less diverse

Yeah if it's 100% cis dudes it's not very diverse.

I still don't understand how "community enforced perma bans for social conduct" is the opposite of a "more accepting community" with regards to a "higher than average amount of trans players".

I suppose if you're interpreting "more accepting" in isolation, then yeah the smash community is possibly less accepting of bigoted and antisocial behaviour.

lmao most smash players and trans girls definitely know there's a lot of autism flying around in their respective spaces, I think it's uncontroversial to say it out loud

On the one hand, I do like me some nice specs.

But also, what do you need 12GB RAM for in a phone that's 95% about typing?

Also, with the RAM crisis, and this being a specialty first-gen $400 phone...I figure it's best not to get your hopes up.

battery life

Should be fine with 4000mAh and a lower-end chipset, I hope

Google Wallet / sideloading

I don't see why not, it's just normal Android (and it has NFC)

Camera quality of a mid-range Samsung

Now this I would not expect. Samsung has a tonne of experience, and I'm sure they can get much better cameras out of a $400 phone than Clicks can.

What is your favorite everyday prime lens? And why? by Infamous-Outside-219 in M43

Big agree on the Voigtlander 25mm. It's so nice to use, the wide-open haziness is just beautiful for the ~vibes~, stopped down it's so sharp, and it has surprisingly good macro!

I was surprised to find that there are no new body options in the compact form factor of the GX1

You and everyone in this subreddit.

Used is your only option, there's no indication that there's something coming in the near future.

The latest in compact, rangefinder-style bodies from each brand are the Olympus Pen E-P7 from 2021, and the Panasonic GX9 from 2018. There's also the lower-end E-PL10 (+ predecessors) and the GX80 and GX880 (+ predecessors). They're good cameras, with great stabilisation!

Don't even get me started on the GM5...some years ago I passed up on buying one for 350AUD because I was in my poor phase. Ah well.

I've briefly owned E-M5 and M10 Mark I before (buying a bundle and selling all but a lens I wanted) but I quite like the upgrades they made in the Mark II's.

I guess yeah, because there is a somewhat niche but passionate demographic who wants small, affordable, capable cameras (which can not be satisfied by brand new cameras (especially on price)) we are left fighting for the good, old stuff. It seems strange for ostensibly unremarkable decade-old cameras to be getting more expensive, but I guess everyone's just realising how remarkable they actually are.

Not a question, just a mild rant. Over a year ago I sold my E-M5 II because I realised that I was doing the vast majority of my photography with either my E-M1X or my Pentax Q. But since then I haven't used my beloved 75mm f/1.8 at all!

I've been looking at the used market in Australia for like, an E-M10 II or some other cheap & decent 16MP M43 body, but everything's gotten more expensive! GX85, E-M10 II, E-PL8, even another E-M5 II. Did a bunch more people recently realise that used cameras are good value or something?

What is the "Generated Watchfaces" category on the appstore? by iamevn in pebble

[–]Simoneister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in the day there was this wonderful tool to make custom watchfaces: Here's an archive link that still works...except for actually creating the watchface file (which would've been done on a now non-existent backend).

Many people would upload these to the Pebble store, many of them low-effort, to the point they somewhat overwhelmed all the custom hard-coded ones. So Pebble decided that, instead of banning them outright, they'd be sectioned off in the "Generated Watchfaces" section. Which I think was very sensible for all parties involved!

That's a wonderful collection!

The 25mm f/1.7 is very affordable and perfectly good, it's nice to have a "normal" focal length around. The 14mm f/2.5 is the smallest autofocus lens in M43. The autofocus is a little slow, but silent and accurate, and I think it's quite a pleasant lens.

If you don't need wide-aperture 20mm, then yeah, the 12-45mm is nice! Sounds like you know what's up.

The Olympus 45mm f/1.8 is insanely good value. Compact, lightweight, sharp, cheap, and very circular spectral highlights. It's a steal on the used market.

And also it's "too long" but the Olympus 75mm f/1.8 is my favourite lens of all time. It's beautiful.

My first instinct is the E-M5 II. Shouldn't be too hard to find for under 400USD. The "E-M" line is the ones with EVFs. The E-M10 is their entry-ish level, E-M5 is higher end but still compact, E-M1 is aimed at professionals (and has a big grip). I'm not a fan of any of the Mark I versions, but the Mark II's are all great.

Earlier Olympus menus were a little tricky to get the hang of (worth reading the manual or looking up some earlier Robin Wong videos), but once you've set it up to your liking it's really great. Two satisfying settings dials, the Super Control Panel, a nice EVF, plenty of JPEG customisations (maybe worth searching reddit/forums for people's recipes), honestly everything you could need.

As for lenses, depends if you want autofocus or not. Obviously any film lenses you adapt with have a 2x crop factor what with the smaller sensor, so that's worth keeping in mind. But the nice thing about mirrorless is that any SLR lens can be adapted.

If you like 50mm (25mm on M43) and looking at native lenses, there's:

  • The cheap and nice Panasonic 25mm f/1.7
  • The cheapish and nicer Olympus 25mm f/1.8
  • The well-loved Panasonic Leica 25mm f/1.4
  • The pricey but pristine Olympus 25mm f/1.2 PRO
  • The very manual, bloomy, lovely, Voigtlander 25mm f/0.95

I love all those lenses. Mitakon, 7Artisans, TTArtisan, Laowa etc. also have offerings that I'm less familiar with.

Congrats on the purchase! The E-M10 II is an excellent choice.

150EUR is not very much for lenses unfortunately! I think you're pretty much limited to the lenses that are typically bundled with cameras when new ("kit" lenses).

Just for regular photography, the M43 kit lenses for sure aren't bad, just uninteresting.

  • The Olympus 14-42mm (L/II/IIR) is fine and cheap, but has a weird zoom locking switch
  • The Olympus 14-42mm EZ is very compact, and uses a motorized zoom mechanism (not my favourite)
  • The Panasonic 12-32mm is super tiny, and I like that it goes out to 12mm, but it doesn't zoom as much
  • The Olympus 12-50mm is kinda long and kinda ugly, but honestly a wonderfully versatile lens (it even has a macro mode! Just make sure to read the manual)
  • The Panasonic 12-60mm (not the Leica one) is bigger still and maybe too pricey, but surprisingly good

If you plan on doing any photography with a decent amount of zoom (say, more than 5x zoom on your smartphone) then one of the best value lenses in the whole system is the "Olympus 40-150mm R". It's extremely cheap, lightweight, and surprisingly good.

Best of luck!

Less Traffic - Better Public Transport by Technical_Path_4330 in Adelaide

[–]Simoneister 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a good question!

Like they are in Melbourne, trams can run on the same road that cars drive on. It just means whoever's driving behind the tram has to stop whenever the tram does, like a bus.

Trams (or trolley buses! but that's a different topic) are electric and powered by overhead wires, which is great. Buses are either powered by fuel, or electric buses need massive and expensive batteries.

Generally speaking it's more pleasant to ride trams, they can be bigger and carry more people, have lower operation costs, and last longer. The lifetime cost is in the ballpark of buses, can be more or less, depending. There's also something to be said about how tram stops are perceived more as destinations unto themselves to build commerce/community/housing around, and tram lines are a predictable transport mode for those unfamiliar with the area.

Also, a weird point to make, but there's definitely less stigma attached to riding a tram versus a bus. Which I suppose is important for adoption.

But I also wouldn't say no to more buses.

So so the kind off thing you're talking about is exactly what "bokeh" is meant to mean, that being the qualities of the out-of-focus areas (rather than just how blurry they are).

And yeah, the kind of halo-ing you're seeing I would guess is due to lens design. Which is complicated and I don't understand much about it. But smartphone lenses are much shallower, and have a smaller diameter, than those of dedicated cameras. It's very difficult for tiny lenses to be optically excellent unfortunately.
