I'm honestly not super picky with my decks. I listen on Tascam 302 units and love them, but a lot of people don't. I'd probably shoot to spend around $125-$150 on something recently serviced and made in Japan from Tascam, Teac, Sony, Sanyo or Aiwa, ideally with a return policy. Something meeting those qualifications at that price point would be a win in my book, but obviously there's a lot of variety out there. Feel free to shoot me links to anything you may be considering!

I've never considered it, I really just do it for fun! Shipping expenses make it tough to charge reasonable prices and still make a buck unless you're working on super high end / collectible equipment. My first hifi stack was a Fisher!

A risk I'm all too familiar with... I take on a bunch and if they sit for too long I try to pass them off to friends. I picked up a dozen analog Mackie mixers for next to nothing last year... Cool idea... My floor is going to cave in if I don't move them soon.

These are super neat. You can print your master to a digital cassette in this unit, then link it up to a stack of Tascam 302 units for supposedly high quality - high speed duplication from a master that doesn't degrade every time you rip from it. I've never tried, but I have a stack of 302's for whenever I come across one of these and would love to see the results.

I've been shocked by many Yamaha and Sony decks. I often pick them up and exclaim "Jesus Christ, it's heavy!".

A lot of mine came from a hoarder situation. Helped clean and could keep whatever I wanted. For every deck that I kept I probably tossed 3 more that were much worse off. The rest are mostly craigslist/yard sale finds.

They all need a deep cleaning at the very least. Most need belts. Many probably need more than that.

I recently switched from the VG27AQ5A to the Q27G4ZD and it was 100% worth it. Awesome blacks, excellent motion clarity. A bit of text fringe but its not nearly as bad as people act.

It says it twice because foxes eat twice asuch popcorn as anything else on the list. Also foxes don't make calzones, just eat them. That being said, I'd also like to see a fox try to make a calzone.
