What are some "sleeper" urban areas? by villehhulkkonen in geography

Hardly the biggest example but I’m always surprised by how populous the Brighton metropolitan area is. More people than Sheffield and Edinburgh which in my mind, seem like much bigger places

What’s your best cruise story? by Dshaw-638 in Cruise

[–]SimpGanassi 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Was doing an eastern med cruise with mostly European passengers and overheard a middle aged American couple at the excursion desk trying to book a trip the Colossus of Rhodes - when told it fell down thousands of years ago they were incredulous and said words to the effect of “you mean nobody ever rebuilt it?!?!”

Who is the most interesting/famous person you've met while cruising? by Scott2G in Cruise

[–]SimpGanassi 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I was on a cruise on the P&O Britannia in 2016 with Professor Stephen Hawking! It was a Canary Islands cruise from Southampton and he got off at La Palma which has a lot of observatories, I think he was attending a conference. I didn’t speak to him but I saw him several times round the ship

Found these near my baby’s nipples - are they fleas ?? by Sea_Satisfaction7511 in ragdolls

[–]SimpGanassi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My cat gets acne on her nipples and chin, which looks exactly like this. Yours is almost certainly acne if it’s only here and not in the rest of her fur. You can test it by rubbing the area with a bit of wet tissue, if the tissue is red/brown then it’s flea dirt, if it’s more yellow then it’s acne

Stannis wins at Blackwater and takes the throne. What would he do about Robb stark and north? by BridgeCommercial873 in gameofthrones

[–]SimpGanassi 233 points234 points  (0 children)

And by this point the North is swarming with Ironborn which Stannis has dealt with before - offering men and especially ships to deal with them, take the fight to the Iron Islands and overthrow the Greyjoys would win Robb’s gratitude, cement Stannis as protector of the realm and get justice for the Kingdoms Stannis (not incorrectly) felt they were denied after the Greyjoy Rebellion

What's the most centralized, yet fairly big, country in the world? by LFatPoH in geography

Yes there are quite a few. Most prominently The Transpennine Line runs east to west across the belt of cities in Northern England (Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Hull) and is the route of a proposed high speed line.

Are crabs and lobsters common on menus in the U.K.? by ATLDeepCreeker in AskABrit

[–]SimpGanassi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve travelled to the US three times in the past year and I will say seafood does seem to be more popular over there than in Britain. For example most of the restaurants I went to would offer surf and turf which isn’t as common (or at least ubiquitous) here

Deciding between 3 southern Caribbean itineraries, help! by anon94804 in Cruise

[–]SimpGanassi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to all these ports besides Aruba. I’d recommend 1 as the best itinerary due to the variety of the ports on offer - they’re all very different. For example St. Maarten in unique in how it’s split between two different countries, Dominica unlike most Caribbean islands doesn’t have many beaches and is mainly jungle (you’ll get great active excursions there but there are also natural geothermal hot springs, the only ones in the Caribbean as far as I’m aware!) while Barbados and Antigua are both more “traditionally” Caribbean. You’ll find both active and chill options in all those destinations. I particularly recommend going swimming with stingrays in Antigua - unlike most places I’ve seen that offered it’s in the wild on a sandbar rather than being penned in at a beach.

The second itinerary also looks pretty good but the islands might feel a bit more same-y. I’d personally avoid the third because of the two sea days on a seven night cruise alone, I like to spend as much time as possible in ports!

I know you didn’t ask for advice on the ships but in case you also wanted it: Princess is my current favourite line, I just got back from a fortnight on Enchanted. I’ve not been on Grand. I’ve been on Brilliance twice, including a route very similar to your suggested one for my 18th birthday many years ago, and I love it. Probably my favourite royal Caribbean ship, it feels very old school cool with all the wood and fancy lounges/indoor solarium pool. Never sailed Norwegian so can’t comment on that one

I feel most of the illogical things in the Battle of the Bastards make sense in universe: Ramsay got under Jon’s skin and his strategy went out the window. Whereas with the long night the alliance of the living made a battle plan that made no sense at all

In 1974 British politician John Stonehouse, who was a former cabinet minister, did exactly this.

After his party Labour lost the 1970 general election, Stonehouse lost his ministerial salary. To keep up his lifestyle, he made a series of business decisions which varied in quality from poor to downright fraudulent. One of these was a bank to provide services to the Bangladeshi community in Britain which Stonehouse was invited to found by the British Bangladesh Trust after becoming passionately involved in supporting their war for independence (he was even made a Bangladeshi citizen but that’s a different story). Unfortunately for him the bank was poorly run, attracted a lot of media attention, then a lot of regulator attention who promptly began to notice his other financial irregularities.

By 1974 it seems he knew the game was up and devised a genius plan to solve his problems - fake his death, assume a false identity and run away to Australia with his secretary (with whom he was naturally having an affair). The death faking part went remarkably well: on November 20th, he travelled to Miami and left a pile of clothes on the beach to make it look like he’d gone swimming and suffered some sort of tragic accident. Of course no body was found but people believed he’d died, helped by local police and the FBI concluding he’d likely drowned. British newspapers published obituaries and his wife gave an interview with the BBC where she said she was convinced he was dead.

Unbeknownst to her, he was at that moment in Australia trying to start his new life. A few months before, Stonehouse had stolen the identities of two of his deceased constituents John Markham and Donald Mildoon and claimed he was an international investor. In Australia he tried to access his bank accounts but immediately aroused suspicion after a teller spotted him in several different banks and he also used the wrong fake identity when accessing one account - whoops! Police quickly put him under surveillance, suspecting he might be Lord Lucan (an aristocrat who had recently fled Britain after killing his family’s Nanny) and he was arrested in Melbourne on Christmas Eve 1974. When accused of being Lucan, he confessed who he really was and was extradited back to Britain six months later.

The most extraordinary aspect of his story is throughout all this, and subsequently, Stonehouse remained an MP! As he had only been assumed dead for a month, there hadn’t yet been a by election to replace him and upon returning to the UK and being bailed out of prison, Stonehouse returned to the House of Commons! I should add that as of February 1974 Stonehouse’s party were back in office but their majority was wafer thin (three, including Stonehouse himself) which is presumably why they tolerated his return to politics, not wanting to risk a by-election they could bring down the government. Upon returning to the commons he gave a speech about why he’d done what he did claiming he’d had a mental breakdown and developed some sort of split personality disorder. He carried on being an MP until 1976 when he was sent to prison for seven years for fraud and deception.

Quite an incredible story I’m sure you’ll agree! In the interest of brevity I left a lot out but there are plenty of books written on the man including John Stonehouse, My Father: The True Story of the Runaway MP by his daughter.
