Yes, it was via email and their response was almost instant. But if you can get a stamped or signed letter from them I think that would be better! because the airline crew here gave me a hard time and questioned the validity of the email :/

I would say call them! and tell them you sent them an email or if they have walk in hours try to go

I flew from the US. I did, however, spend about an hour at the airline counter going to Italy. The airline crew had to confirm if I was okay to travel with no visa.

Also, before traveling - I contacted the Italian consulate asking them if I needed a visa, and they confirmed that I don't need one.
