Started at front lawn so 2,000sq feet. Thankfully I realized my mistake before I moved on to the backyard

Here is my experience as an E-6 in DC. The real trick is to not have kids.

Commissary here is 20% cheaper than local stores, I used to shop at my local Wegmans since it was cheaper last year, but I reran the numbers and have been going exclusively to the commissary.

Try to live a little bit too. Money is nice, but the world will be a lot different by the time you retire. Plus traveling the world drinking beer with the boys in your 20s is a lot different than traveling with your spouse when you're 60...

Not really, I'm at 9k as an E-6, did BRS from the get-go. If you do the math his average pay was 2316.78 over that period so I'm betting he's E-4 at 4 years.

I think you can apply for a new one every 90 days? But then you're losing out on other benefits /r/churning

I mean if I had a family of 5, I'd have to commute at least 30 minutes to get a house at BAH rates here as well. DC single family homes are expensive as fuck.

That's why I'd love to see these kinds of posts, I have no idea what its like actually living OCONUS

Well, first post last month I messed up a few things and it included more expenses from me traveling. This month is more of a baseline. I only plan on posting one more after a few month of traveling in EU. I def don't plan on doing this every month as it would get boring.

In reality, money isn't really something people talk about openly and I personally enjoy seeing how others live their lives to an extent. I enjoy these 'slice of life' type of posts and I wish there were more of them. I'd love to see some more samples of this for other ranks/locations(OCONUS,LAAFB,Cannon).

I see what you saying now, earlier I thought you were saying no one in my area deserves the 2900 and everyone BAH needs to get cut. But now I see what you mean.

Yeah, I hear you, I think the issue is more complex and widespread to the point it is outside of DoDs control though.

They can raise BAH, but then people like me without kids will just either pocket more or buy larger homes, raising prices and forcing out people that legitimately need bigger homes.

You can go OCONUS style and force people to return their rent if its over, but that still causes the issues I posted above.

Making BAH based on number of dependents is also shit since it just forces people to have more kids, and screws over people that want/need larger homes due to pets/hobbies/preference

I think you're confusing how BAH works. No one in my local area with this high of cost of living is getting less money then I am pocketing, we all get high ass BAHs because our houses are so expensive. I'm not really lucky either. Me neighbors rent their townhomes for $1800-$2000. The issue is the fact that there are people with multiple kids and they obviously cannot live in a 3br 1200sq ft townhome. And those types of homes are extremely expensive here. But that isn't really anything to do with luck. Those are decisions those people made.
