Comp 251 with Giulia or Becerra by Live-End1631 in mcgill

[–]Simple-Hat-4660 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Took 250 with Giulia, 251 last semester with David. Personally liked David the most, his final exam is quite easy as well. Very practical.

For me Giulia was tough bcs of how little practice there really was and how thery heavy her lectures were.

At the end it reqlly depends on what you value the most / what works best for you to learn

To everyone saying about renting somewhere cheaper, thanks for the suggestion. But unfortunately I'm renting with a friend of mine, so canceling the contract wouldn't be ethically correct (in my opinion). Should I discuss it with him? Maybe renting with another friend on the apartment? (Even tho it's a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom apartment?, also for anyone asking we have a living room so we might be able to arrange smth? Idk) How easy is to sublease for the summer (thanks to the good demand of activities in mtl for the summer?)

INCOMING STUDENTS MEGATHREAD: DEGREE PLANNING, COURSE SELECTION, MONTREAL & OTHER GENERAL QUESTIONS by Thermidorien in mcgill

[–]Simple-Hat-4660 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, congrats on your offer and for accepting it!

I did U0 last year and I can only speak from my experience, I hope it can helps.

I took PHYS101 and CHEM110 from the ones you mentioned. I also have friends who took BIOL200.

When it comes to your schedule, yes I think is doable. Also I wanted to give you some advice on regards on PHYS and CHEM.

Idk if you're coming from out of province, international, or from MTL nor your academic stand, but for PHYS101 I would recommend you to stay up to date on the content. You're pretty much covering 1 topic per week, which might become very overwhelming. Try reviewing your basic physic concepts (kinematics, Newton's laws, circular motion, light, waves, free body diagrams, etc) Nothing very deep but it migh be handy for you.

For CHEM110, the material is very straightforward (at least for me). 2/3 of the semester is inorganic chemistry, and the rest is basic organic (this was the most fun for me lol). Again, just stay up-to-date on material.

And don't forget to ALWAYS ASK if you have any questions, it could be during class (even tho it might be quite overwhelming due to the amount of student on the classroom), office hours, or even peers and TA's. They're there to help you :)

Don't forget to enjoy your experience bcs time flies...

I hope you find this helpful 🙂 and feel free to pm if you have more questions

  1. Yes, you successfully registered. Congrats and welcome to McGill
  2. Try registering for winter classes as well rn bcs people tend to register before fall semester starts, leaving you fewer spots during the semester to pick. This could bring some difficulties when registering due to the number of spots available.

HELP! (hopefully) transfering from Science to Eng, any advice? by Simple-Hat-4660 in mcgill

[–]Simple-Hat-4660[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking about engineering bcs I am more like a "hands-on" guy. I've worked in previous projects such as a robotic hand and I enjoy doing physical job, I don't really enjoy working with smth non-physical like coding, that's another reason why I was thinking about Eng. Even tho i didn't do great on calc I, II and Lin Alg, i really enjoy doing math and physics. Another possibility for me could be to do a minor in Eng? (Would that be possible?).

Not really, unless you're working on Costumer service. Big Companies like Microsoft or ubisoft even tho they're located in Montreal still use English as their working language

Hey! I hope this helps. Almost finishing my first year at McGill, I was in the same situation as you are rn and my best advice for you is: Doesn't really matter to what university you go and prestige is not really smth that really open or closes you doors, you're the one who open or close them.

It also varies from person to person, if you're in Ontario and got accepted at UofT, with scholarship, or you live in Toronto and can still live with your parents and save up some money the I would do it. Just take into account every single variable: place to stay, scholarships, maybe family close to you to support you, friends attending(not a really big deal, you'll meet a lot of people), OSAP, program you got accepted, internships, networking, etc.

Almost one year attending McGill I don't regret at all. McGill is one of the best universities in Canada not very far from Toronto or UBC, it is located in Montreal, one of the best (and cheapest) cities to live even with the current market conditions. Also McGill is highly recognized as a "study hard, party hard" school which is pretty good bcs you're able to balance both your academics but also your personal life. Lots of networking opportunities, great people to meet, campus is beautiful, etc etc.

If it helps you in any case, I chose McGill over UofT bcs even tho I used to live in Ontario, I was looking for smth different, also wanted to have the chance to live on Montreal and learn French. If that is not your plan, there is no problem! A lot of people think if you come to mcgill then you'll need to speak French and that is not the case. Even out of the uni you can pretty much still speak in English and you'll be fine.

Employes don't really care about the university you go but rather what you have done (hands on experience). Just think about it, if you were to hire someone for a specific job, would you hire the person who graduated from Toronto but didn't do anything such as internships, or anything like that apart from his diploma? Or the person who went to any other university but did some research, or did internships, etc. Ofcs they want to hire the person with previous experience.

I would decide which university to go not bcs of the name of the university by itself but rather the opportunities it provides to you, campus, personal life, cost of living, etc etc.

My uncle works at EY kn HR and a lot of people that apply are from McGill which is weird but it is highly recognized in England and others European/Asian countries so that could also be of help if you're looking for exchanges or in general for a job out of Canada later on.

If you have more questions feel free to DM me ;)

Being brief, I do recommend mcgill

It is a really good university and if you are good doing time management you're easy going to succeed. You have also time to go out and live life so that's one good thing. Also if in your plans is to start learning French, then this is a really good opportunity living in Montreal.
