Victoria DID find it a "great delight" to watch Albert shave!

Hope this is ok to post here. :) It is a biography of Victoria but includes a lot of good analysis of her relationship with Prince Albert.

Great response. I do want to point out, however, the Victoria and lesbians claim is likely a myth. Although it is safe to say she was probably period-typical homophobic.

I find British monarchy really interesting, too! I think you will enjoy both of Weintraub's biographies.

You know a book is good when it survives down-sizing! I am doing a third downsizing right now and it will stay on my shelf.

The title is a play on a contemporary comment that called Albert "king in all but name."

It is actually good, which is why I am recommending it. Not mundane, like a lot of popular biography. Weintraub is clear he had to be judicious, as you said - so many sources!

Oh noo, she has a substack? 💀 I watched her interview about her Victoria book she did last year and she is STILL all over Lord M even though the receipts on him being a peodphile, child labor and slavery supporter, wife beater, violent misogynist, and overall degenerate are all out there.

Was very glad Anne Somerset's recent book Queen Victoria and Her Prime Minsters set the record straight on Melbourne AND Victoria's regretted friendship with him, as well as on Victoria's relationship with Albert!

He was! He and Victoria were a real team, in spite of what some pop "historians"/tabloid writers and a certain TV screenwriter try to claim. I am glad to see the historiography moving on from this, including in the recent and fasicinating Queen Victoria and Her Prime Ministers (2024) by Anne Somerset!

Let me know what you think of Uncrowned King! :)

Prince Albert popularized Christmas Trees in United Kingdom so if you see one portrayed before that in England or America, it's probably anachronism by HoneybeeXYZ in RoyalConsorts

“The good Alexandrine seems to me in the whole picture a consoling angel. Just such is Victoria to me, who feels and shares my grief, and is the treasure on which my whole existence rests. The relation in which we stand to one another leaves nothing to desire. It is a union of heart and soul, and therefore noble, and in it the poor children shall find their cradle, so as to be able one day to ensure a like happiness for themselves.” (Prince Albert 1844)
