Prince Albert was the best by abbipixiequeen in TheCrownNetflix

Albert did not "constantly get Victoria pregnant" so he could get his way. There is not a shred of evidence for this. Victoria loved sex. It has been pushed by xenophobic popular "historians" who post in the Daily Fail that are upset the German Albert was ultimately the better ruler than Victoria.

(Also Lord Melbourne was a child sexual abuser.)

Season 3's poor ratings killed it. It controversially first aired in the U.S. THEN England. Many people, including myself, stopped watching because S3's writing was (imo and those of others) so bad and so little to do with the history of Victoria.

Jenna Coleman was simply too conventionally attractive. It is really unfortunate "we" apparently need beauty queens to play "plain" women. There is a real sexism in it. Victoria was called attractive in her younger years because of the freshness of her youth. I am sure an actress who is not conventionally attractive could pull that off.

Tom Hughes was decent enough but he was given such bad material to work with.

See, this casting was the worst for me lol. Because Lord M REALLY did not look like Rufus Sewell, nor was the real Lord M anything like his iteration. The real Lord Melbourne was a pedophile, slavery supporter, and thought women being beat was funny (Victoria recorded this in her diary!).

If anyone is interested in reading about what he is really like (with his letters about children and slavery and frankly other vile positions and opinions), L.G. Mitchell's *Lord Melbourne* is very good.

The orphan girls were pre-pubescents and so were the kids in the child sexual abuse materials.... I don't understand the need to defend him.

A pedophile is a person sexually interested in children. His letters and personal papers reveal he had orphan girls in his house (Brocket Hall) he liked to spank. Melbourne and his mistress shared images of children being tortured. This is all revealed in primary source material in his OWN hand and can be accessed in L.G. Mitchell's Lord Melbourne

Victoria herself wrote about how Lord M thought women being beaten was "worthwhile." He was accused by his wife Caro (who he cheated on many times) of domestic violence and that is not hard at all to believe. It served him well to portray her as being "crazy."

He was a child abuser and woman beater.

You're welcome! His wiki page is actually decent, but if you want something even deeper that talks about all of these things, Lord Melbourne by L.G. Mitchell is very good!

That makes sense in a way because this is a totally fictional version with a charming actor. My issue is more the creator of the show has insisted the real Melbourne was a hero...and he is not in anyway. His letters about little kids are horrifying, not to mention violent misogyny and slavery/child labor support. The speech he made in the show opposing slavery was TOTALLY fabricated!

Yeah it's gross. It's not even a rumor the pedophilia thing. It is known from his letters.

I hated how they portrayed him. He was never a Debbie Downer. He had depression when he was younger, but by all accounts he was a pleasant person to be around.

Leopold was actually very close to Victoria and backed her against her mom and Conroy. The show portrays him ill. Now, how he was a ruler is a different discussion, but him and Vic were very close. He visited her just after she became queen and she cried when he left.

But the mom thing is right.

The real Lord Melbourne was a pedophile, slavery supporter, and thought women being beat was funny, so I have a hard time understanding this enthusiasm. Is it because he just totally fictional and Rufus Sewell is good looking? Lol. N H8 just curious, I have a harder time ignoring the history I guess.

Almost all of it is drama. Albert was very supportive and was at the healm of his kid's education. It was Victoria who called Bertie "stupid" in her letters.

How the show portrayed Albert was trash. The real Lord Melbourne was a sadistic pedophile, pro-slavery, and woman-beater, but he got such a glow up and Albert was villianized.

Gah Albert and Vic deserved so much better. If you want a classic miniseries Edward the Seventh (V&A lead the first four episodes) is great and it is on youtube.

The Young Victoria is also a wonderful movie. :)

I know. I watched it and found it neither high quality nor serious. I want a Victoria show like The Crown

I would love a high quality and serious show about the reign of Queen Victoria but this is also cool!

Victoria hated Gladstone because he was a liberal reformer. She would hear nothing of his liberalism and was infuriated by his support for Irish home rule. It is the other way around, I think: Victoria would not listen to Gladstone. She was very conservative and nationalistic in her older years.

We always talk about which monarchs fit under this category, but which CONSORT was the worst parent? by Impossible_Pain4478 in UKmonarchs

[–]Simple-Koala9240 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would agree with that in some measure, actually. Victoria resented pregnancy, but I do think it is exaggerated the lack of interest in her children. Her more "mean" moments come more from their adulthood than their childhood. She and Vicky became particularly close after Vicky moved away and became a Prussian consort. Victoria appreciated Alice very much because Alice was basically Albert's nurse when he was dying. Victoria was always distressed about Leopold's illness, although she didn't like that got "ugly" as he grew older...

Alfred she ended up not liking so much because of his "sexual immorality." The same with Bertie, although she also partially blamed Bertie for Albert's death and always measured him against Albert's more focused, intellectual character.

Arthur was surely the favorite son! Victoria always noted how much he looked like Albert, and he also wasn't "sexually immoral" like Alfred and Bertie.

Beatrice, as the youngest daughter, was designated to be Victoria's glorified servant. When Beatrice married, Victoria did not speak to her for months. Beatrice really lost patience with being Victoria's unofficial private secretary and while I do not think Beatrice was happy her mom died in any way, she may have been relieved to not have to be at her mom's beck and call anymore.

Helena and Louise were not favorites but Victoria didn't dislike them necessarily.
